Chapter 65
After lunch, the children and Radha went to rest, while LD caught up with some work relating to SSI. Radha went to Varun with some halva she had kept away. She had seen how he had given Charu his share of gulab jamuns because it was her favourite. Varun was not only her son but also Charu's Bhai. She looked up to him for everything. And Varun loved his sister. He loved his brothers too but Charu was special. How could Anila come and disrupt this? She would not allow it. Hopefully she was gone now.
She feeds Varun the halva. "Mummy you kept this for me?" "Yes Beta. I saw you giving your gulab jamuns to Charu and your Papa ate up all the rest." "You are the best Mummy in the world." "And you are the best son in the world," she replies hugging him tightly. "Now rest for a while and then Papa may take you all out for football."
She goes to her own room and lies down for a nap. She dreams of a wicked witch grabbing Varun from her arms and wakes up with a start. LD is standing by the window and is staring out. "LD what happened?" "I was thinking about Anila," he replies without turning around. "Anila? Why? Forget about her." "It's not so simple. We need to tell Varun the truth." "What truth? He is our son and that is the truth."
"Sweetheart, this isn't easy for me either. But we need to tell him the truth that we are not his natural parents. He needs to know at some time." "We can do that later. He is too young now." "No Radha, we need to tell him now. He is already wondering why his last name is different from ours. He needs to hear first the truth from the people who love him and not from strangers who may hurt him." "Okay we will tell him this evening after dinner."
"We also need to let Anila meet him." "Never. I am his mother and the only mother he will ever need." "Radha, there is no one in the world who will doubt that you are his mother. But Radha think, when in ten years from now, he learns from somewhere that his dying birth mother came to meet him before she died and you didn't allow her to meet him, how would he feel about it?"
"But LD, who is going to tell him about this if Anila is no more?" "Someone has helped Anila to find us. I asked Raj Uncle about Anila and he was aware that she was ill but did not tell her where we lived. So there is someone out there, who knows and who will use this information as a weapon. Telling Varun the truth is the only way to diffuse the weapon before it is used."
"You tell him. I can't do this." "Radha, you have to be there. You are the person that he loves most in the world. Much more than he loves me." "My poor baby! Why does he have to go through all of this?" "Radha, he has people who love him. There are many who don't."
In the evening, LD takes the children out to the ground where they can run around and kick the ball without being worried about breaking a window. Radha braces herself for the painful discussion after dinner. LD was right. Varun needed to know the truth and deserved to hear it from the people who loved him the most and not from some stranger on the street.
After dinner, when Charu and the twins are in bed, LD brings Varun to their room. "Varun Beta, you know we love you?" "Yes Papa. And I love you too." "We have to tell you something. You have another mother. The mother who gave birth to you. When she was not able to look after you, you came to live with us and Mummy became your mother." "Like Krishnaji had two Mummies?" "Yes like Krishnaji had two mummies." Children could make complicated things so simple.
"What happened to my other mother?" "Beta, she is not well. She will be going to God soon. But she wants to see you. Will you be willing to meet her?"
"Was she the woman who was sitting in the car in the morning?"
