Chapter 63

LD is seething. He had come back and heard Ms Balan accuse Radha of trying to use pregnancy to tie him down. The baby that was an affirmation of their love for each other being spoken about so degradingly was more than he could take.

"Ms Balan, I have watched you belittle my wife and children in silence because I had my own reasons then. But those reasons no longer exist. I will not watch my family being subject to such treatment. So please just stay away from my wife and children because the next time you are rude to them, I may forget I am a gentleman. Sweetheart, if you are done, shall we go to our room?" he asks Radha proffering his arm to her. Radha takes his hand and gets up. "Goodnight Ms Balan."

With Radha's hand firmly tucked in his own, LD practically marches to the building. "LD, calm down. She has a crush on you. Don't blame her. You are so handsome that every unattached woman will be attracted to you." "Humph! But I am not unattached. I told her on the first day that I met her here that I was a married man with children. That was even before I knew you were here. I am sorry but women are their own worst enemies."

As they reach their room, LD is calmer. "Radha, you change. I'll have a shower and change." Radha changes out of her lehenga and into the casual kurta pyjama that she had brought. LD was still in the shower. She would lie down for a while.

LD comes out of the shower and finds Radha fast asleep. He can't wake her up. It would be cruel. He calls Sweetie and lets her know that they would spend the night in town. Radha wakes up in the middle of the night. This was not their room. But LD was with her. They were still in the club. She starts to get up. "Relax. I told Sweetie that we would come in the morning." "Does this mean I have you all to myself, Mr C." "Not quite. Baby is with us." "Baby won't mind me getting an extra hug."

In the morning, they get ready to go home when LD gets a call. "Radha we have to stop by the school on our way back. There is a lady at the gate asking for us. They seem to think it's Ma."

Mumma? They had told their families about the baby but didn't expect anyone to come. In fact, when Suhasini Mumma asked if she should come over, Radha had firmly told her that LD had looked after her through the earlier pregnancies and he was quite capable of doing it again. "You are still angry with your Papa aren't you." "No Mumma, I am not angry. But you have to understand that things cannot be back to what we had. LD could have thrown his weight around as a son-in-law but chose to be a son to you. And he was treated like dirt by Papa. LD is my world and I will not allow him to be hurt by anyone."

LD had overheard the conversation and was touched. He knew that most women preferred to go back to their own homes when they were expecting a baby to be cared for by their mothers. But Radha had preferred to stay with him and trusted him to look after her. But a mother was a mother and Suhasini Ma must have come to see her own baby. After all no matter how old you became, you were always a child to your parents.

As LD drove back, they were both silent. Radha's mind was in turmoil. Why had Mumma come? And why had she not told them about her plans? And had Papa come also? That would be a stressful situation.

LD was worried. He hoped that Radha was not going to be stressed by this visit. He had no issues with Ma or even Uncle visiting. He had every right to see his daughter but he was worried about how Radha would take it. He turns into the school's main gate and parks the car.

LD and Radha get out of the car and walk towards the security cabin and stopped stunned. The woman waiting was Anila!

Chapter 64

"Anilaji? What are you doing here and what do you want?" "I want to see my son." "Your son? Which son? The boy you threw out of your life when you decided to start a new life. He is no longer your son. He is my son. The eldest of my children. Don't you dare come anywhere near him." "Radha calm down." "How LD? She just walks in and thinks she can walk into Varun's life and unsettle him? I won't allow it." "Radhaji, I am his mother. You cannot stop me from seeing the child I gave birth to and brought up for four years." "Brought up? You kept him hungry and beat him up. You call that bringing up?" "I brought up my son in the way that I thought best so that he wouldn't be spoilt."

"LD, why are we listening to this woman. Let's go home. Our children will be waiting for us." "Sir, please. I am dying. I do not have long to live. The doctors say may be three weeks. It must be a punishment for my sins towards Varun. Sir, please, I want to see my son once before I die." "Come LD, this must be another trick." "No Sir. I am telling the truth. See Sir, my hospital card. You can call the doctor and check. Please Sir. Just once. I want to see my son just once."

"You want to see your son once. Then come with us. You can sit in the car and watch him from there. Do not try to talk to him. I don't want you to upset him in any manner." "Okay Sir." LD opens the back door of the car and Anila gets in. Radha is annoyed with LD and get in also. LD sees her tense face and reaches over to touch her hand but she moves it away.

They drive up to the house. The children have already got up and were ready for their breakfast. They came on to the veranda as they heard the car being parked. They had been told to wait for the car to stop and the driver to leave the car before going down the steps. As soon as LD got out, they rushed to Radha. "Mummy, we missed you." "I missed you too. Let's get breakfast ready."

As they walk towards the house, Charu stumbles and she reaches out to her Bhai not to her mother. Varun steadies her and hold her hand as the reach the house. Anila watches this silently tears rolling down her face. Her son was loved by another woman the way she should have loved him. He was happy. Loved as a son and as a brother. What more could she want. "Are you ready to go back now?" She nods. LD drives her out of the campus to the small hotel where she was staying. "Don't try to come anywhere near my son."

The children have finished breakfast when LD gets home. He looks for Radha and she is busy sorting her wardrobe. "Have you had breakfast?" "When have I eaten without you? Your memory is very short nowadays." "Radha, I know you are angry. She is a dying woman. She was not going to leave without seeing Varun. What were we going to do? Leave the guards to deal with her? And then talk about it amongst themselves and to others?"

Grudgingly, Radha admits that LD was right. "I am scared. I don't think this will end with one visit to see Varun. How did she find us LD? Only Raj Uncle and Lata Aunty come and visit us here. No one else knows about where we actually work and live." "We have to find out. You are right. This will not stop with one meeting."

Radha and LD have their breakfast. LD sits with Varun and Charu and does homework with them. The routine was that the weekday homework was done with Radha and on Saturday, Papa supervised the studies. Radha tells Sweetie what to make for lunch and decided to make gulab jamuns for desert. Charu loved them.

In her room Anila is by herself staring at the walls. She had gone to Manjeet and he had demanded a large sum of money. She sold what jewellery she had and raised the money. When she got the address she came.

She was dying. Her son should light her pyre.

What was last line! hope that wont bring Storm in their life 😊

I dunno what to feel at the moment. Everyone deserves a second chance but a woman who is still so selfish that she just wants him to light her pyre for the sake of rituals, at least to me it sounds like this, maybe doesn't deserve it. She failed every duty as a mother and she doesn't deserve respect of a mother for that.
