Chapter 58

LD goes to the children's room. Viv and Sid are out of bed and stuffing some clothes into their tiny school bags. He watches from the shadows. He moves into the darkness as they leave the room. They go to the hall and realise they cannot open the door. Together they drag a stool to the door and Viv gets on it. But even then Viv couldn't reach the top bolt. "Shall I open it for you?" asks LD. "Papa!" "What are you up to?" "We are leaving." "We are running away." "But why?" "We have been bad." "We made Mummy sad." "Won't she be sad when she doesn't see you in the morning?" "She can't love us anymore." "Viv, Sid come here to me. I need to tell you something about Mummy." The boys come to him and he lifts them on to his lap. "Mummy loves you very much. She is sad if you or Varun or Charu are naughty but that doesn't make her stop loving you all." "Really?" "Really. Now are you ready to go back to bed?" "Yes Papa," says Viv. "Papa, I am hungry," says Sid.

Smiling he lifts them up and takes them to the kitchen. He warms up some milk and sees the left over halva. "How about some halva first." Sid's face lights up. After eating the halva and drinking the milk the boys were yawning. "Papa, will you tell us a story?" "Sure."

He settles them in the double bed that they used and lay down beside them. "Once upon a time there was a pretty girl studying in a college. She wanted to be an actress. One day when she was rushing for an audition, she found that the road was blocked by a truck. She looked for the driver. But he wasn't there. Then the person whose things were in the truck came. So the pretty girl asked him to get the truck moved. But he refused." "Why?" "Because he was being mean. Then his mummy came and told the boy to behave and asked the driver to move the truck. Later, the pretty girl got into a fight with the boy's grandfather and so the boy was angry with her. So, when she was dressed up he drove a bike very fast so that mud fell on her. She also paid him back and the two of them kept fighting like this until one day the boy did something very stupid."

"What did he do," asks Sid. "He arranged for a pretend wedding so that he could take pictures and people would laugh at her. But things didn't happen as he planned." "What happened?" "The person who was supposed to act as the groom didn't come so the naughty boy had to be the pretend groom. The pretend wedding happened but at the end, the priest told them that this was not a pretend wedding and that they were really married." "Then what did they do?" "Then the boy found that he loved the pretty girl and asked her to stay with him." "Did she?" "Yes she did and now they have four beautiful children." "Is this a real story? Who is the pretty girl?" "I'll tell you tomorrow. Viv is already asleep. You need to sleep too. Goodnight love." "Goodnight Papa." After a few seconds. "Papa?" "Yes Sid." "We love you." LD kisses him as his eyes close.

Radha wakes up and finds LD gone. He must have gone for a round. She goes into the kitchen and finds the remnants of the night party. What happened last night? She would ask LD when he got back. She went to the hall to open out the curtains and finds the two bags. Opening the bags, she sees the clothes and frowns. What was going on here?

She goes to the children's room and finds LD asleep with the twins. Sweetie comes in and starts putting breakfast together. Radha goes for her shower and then wakes up LD. "So what was the midnight party about?" "Viv and Sid had decided that they had made you sad and so they had planned to run away from home." "What? Where do they get such ideas? I don't even have a TV." "Bhabhi, last week the maid from the Chakraborthy house came and was narrating to Chameli Didi about how her daughter had run away from home to go off with her boyfriend. The boys must have overheard."

The Primary School head had told Radha to bring Viv and Sid to school so that they would move on beyond this incident. As they drove off to the school, Sid remembered. Papa was going to tell him who the pretty girl was. "Papa, who was the pretty girl? You said you would tell today."

"Pretty girl? Who is this LD?"

Chapter 59

"I'll show you when we get to the school," LD tells the boys. When they arrive, they all get out of the car. Varun takes Charu and goes towards her classroom. Charu considered Varun to be more of a parent than a sibling and Varun was always there for her. LD lifts the twins up and seats them on the bonnet of the car. Drawing Radha close to him, he says, "this is the pretty girl. And despite how I hurt her, she still loves me. So remember, Mummy will always love you. Don't do naughty things because that will make her sad. But even if you make a mistake, remember that Mummy will still love you."

"Viv, Sid come along its almost time for you to be in the class." The boys give their parents hugs and kisses and go with their teacher. "I am not really sure what is going on here, LD." "The boys felt that they had been so naughty that they couldn't be loved anymore. I just told them the story of how much naughtier I had been but that you still loved me." "I am crazy aren't I? LD, I have some work on this campus so I'll stay here and come back when you come to pick up the twins. "Sure. Bye. Be good." "Look who's talking!"

Smiling, LD gets into the car and goes to his office. He is working on lockdown procedures for the school. "There is a bigger threat for the students from a crazy person wielding a gun than a fire burning down these buildings," he had explained to the safety committee who were quite complacent since they had a well-rehearsed evacuation process.

When he goes to collect Radha, he notices that she is looking a little pale. "Are you okay." "I'm fine. Just a little tired. I have told Sameer that I am taking the afternoon off." "Okay. Should I take the afternoon off also?" "If you are in the house, I doubt I will get any rest. You make so much noise." "How rude."

"Sweetie, your Bhabhi is tired. Make sure she rests and that these fellows do not disturb her." "Don't worry Bhai. The boys are falling asleep themselves. But you better be ready to play ball with them when you get back."

LD goes to his office. By four o'clock, he has a sketch of what would work for the school. As he leaves, a thought strikes him and he stops at the medical store to make a purchase before going home. Radha is on the veranda watching the children play in the garden. After he parks the car, they rush to him. They have been taught not to run towards the car until Papa opens his door.

LD gives them all hugs and promises to join them after a cup of tea. Radha joins him for tea. LD gives her the package he picked up at the medical store. "What is this LD? Another I love you' gift." "You could say so. I need to go otherwise the troops will be restless."

Radha opens the package and finds a pregnancy testing kit. Where did he pick this up from? Hopefully not the medical store near the school. The man was known to be a gossip. She goes out but sees that LD is busy with the kids. Charu seemed to be a little distracted. "Charu, why are you so quiet?" "Mummy is Bhai not my Bhai?" "Who told you this?" "You know Yash, the one who pulled my hair? He came towards me and I told him that I would tell my Bhai. He laughed and said that Bhai was not really my Bhai." "Charu, Varun will always be your Bhai. From the first day he came to live with us he was so protective of you. No one could come near you or touch you unless he allowed it. He was not born in our home, but his home is with us and he will always be my child and your brother. Now tell your Papa and brothers to come inside."

After dinner, Radha asks LD about the kit. "I picked it up from the medical store near the school." "LD! The man is a gossip. It will be all over town." "What will be all over town?" "That you bought a pregnancy testing kit." "I don't understand. I am a married man living with my wife. What is the big deal if I bought a testing kit?"

"You men! You never understand."

I am with LD. What's the big deal? Why should she listen to gossips when she has a loving husband? it's not as if they are cheating or something so why should it matter.

Very true. Pregnancy causes mood swings. Fortunately, Radha has a loving husband who can take her mood swings lightly.

Well my Zoology teacher used to have a lot of mood swings so does that imply...😆

😆 That lady loved the topic of human reproduction and brought that into everything possible! Thank god she left us! Worst part is that she used to make her own theory and tell us and it never matched any of the books we had.
