"Why are you sitting here alone?" a high pitched yet soothing voice broke through the air, "Arre, I asked you something. What's your name?" The voice came again but this time, with deep suspicion.
Nikhil was sitting dejectedly on one of the school benches waiting for his mother to come pick him up when he looked up to see a cute girl with two pigtails talking to him.
"Nikhil" he quietly replied.
"Did you have your food Nikhil? I saw the boys troubling you in the break. Why didn't you complain to the teacher?" she ventured.
"Leave me alone" he said, giving her a repressive look that told her to mind her own business.
The girl look pained, but she was not done, "How old are you?"
"I am four."
"Hi. I am Apoorva and my friends call me Appu. But since I am elder to you by a few months, you call me Appu di. Okay?"
Nikhil nodded with a languishing sigh, hoping she would go away.
"You don't talk much, do you? Are you waiting for your dad?"
Silence ensued.
"My dad is a doctor. He is always so busy. So he sends his driver to pick me up. Will you come with me..." she took a pause carefully thinking of her next words, "Nikki?"
"Dont call me that. Nikki sounds like a girl"
The girl laughed softly, happy that her words had the desired effect.
"Well, you are behaving like a girl, not answering my questions and feeling shy"
She had half expected him to look blank but instead he retorted back, "If you will call me Nikki, I will call you Appu"
"But you are younger than me. Alright, I will call you Chote", she added with a twinkle in her eyes, "Okay?"
"That doesn't even have any meaning" Nikhil wailed grudgingly.
"Buddhu, chote means younger and you are younger to me, ain't it? My mom also calls her younger brother Chote and you are like a younger brother to me. Okay?"
Nikhil nodded again, conceding to her demands.
"Ok, where is your dad? When is he coming to pick you?"
"My mom is going to come. She is working"
"Then come with me. We will have lunch at my home and then I will drop you back to school in an hour or two"
"But you are a stranger"
The girl poked her tongue out at him, "No I am your friend and you just now called me di"
"Alright" He said, smiling weakly at his new friend
