Chapter 32:
"Nahi Mama, aisa nahi ho sakta!.......Maan dekho na, Mama se kaho yeh kya keh rahi hain!?" Geet said looking at Maan tears flowing down through her eyes like never before.
He rushed over to Geet and held Rano's hand and squeezed a sign of assurance. Rano nodded in denial crying. Sukhdev put his hands on his head helpless.
"Geet kuch nahi ho ga Mom ko! Tum aise kaho gi toh unka kya hoga?" he said caressing her back soothing her.
Maan hugged Rano who was crying helplessly now.
Sukhdev looked up and went to hug Geet.
She cried shivering in fear.
"Geet yaad hai Suhana?" Rano asked now looking at Maan's confused face.
"Meri dost from college who now lives in Switzerland?" Rano said calmer now.
"Suhana Bua ka kya hai isme?" Geet asked now tears still flowing down.
Maan looked at her in pain. He was in pain too.
"Well, beta tumhari Maa ne unko phone kiya and she gave us the same news" Sukhdev said sadly.
He looked at both of their confused faces.
"Well she has cancer, it's the last stage. Your mom called her and comforted her. She talked to Reet and she went crazy just like you did now. Rano and I both spoke to her and all she said was, How would Geet react if you told her what mom told me, mujhe tab koi samjhai jab khud is situation se guzar chuke hon. Jaayie Geet ko kehiye. Phir baad main mujhe phone kar ke batayie ga. You'll know exactly how I feel right now!? And she hung up the phone."
Geet looked up at her mom and gave her the coldest and most disgusted look ever than she pushed her dad's arms away and ran upto her room.
Maan blinked in relief.
"Auntie yeh sab kyat ha?" he asked anger evident in his voice.
"Maan before tum kuch kaho ek baar yeh socho ke how do the cancer patients feel? How do their families feel? Hum sab itni aasaani se keh dete hain ke sab theek ho jaaye ga. Koi yeh nahi sochta ke unpe kya beete gi!" said Rano her tears dried.
"Woh hum dono ko college times se jaanti hai. Reet is like my own daughter" said Sukhdev feeling the pain.
"Main Geet ko dekh ke aati hoon" said Rano.
Maan wanted to stop her because he knew how angry Geet was right now. But he couldn't.
Rano walked up the stairs feeling heavy hearted.
"Geet darvaza kholo" she asked knocking.
"LEAVE!!!"
"Stop it Geet.."
"I don't care!!" she screamed her makeup smuged.
"Beta meri ek baar baat to sun lo" she said helpless.
No answer.
Rano disappointedly walked down the stairs.
"Kya hua?" asked Sukhdev.
"Maan please ja kar dekho" said Rano wiping tears away.
He got up and patted her shoulder comforting her and then rushed up the stairs.
"Geet open the door it's me" he said head down knocking.
"No!"
"Maine kya kiya?"
After a few seconds the door opened.
She sat on the chair in her room head between her knees.
"Geet" he said bringing her into an embrace.
"Maan aisa koi karta hai?" she asked still sad.
"Dekho tumhe kaisa laga yeh sun ke. Tum Suhana auntie ko bachpan se jaanti ho haina?"
"Maan I call her bua. She's so dear to me, main aur Reet ek saath hi bade hue hain" she said now looking up at him.
He wiped her tears.
"Mujhe dar lag raha hai Maan, jab Mama mujhe chod ke jaayein gi toh phir kya hoga?" she asked scared.
"Geet ek din sab ne jaana hota hai. Aisa nahi ho sakta na keh sab hamesha zinda rahain. We always remember them in our memories though" he said moving the hair off her face now.
"Maan Reet ka kya haal ho raha ho ga! Auntie ka kya haal………" she said her eyes filling up again.
"You know what, you can go meet them. Spend time with them, Mom ko bhi le jaana" he said kissing her forehead.
"Haan hum nahi support karainge toh kaun karega" she said nodding.
"That's my girl, ab chalo go freshen up. You look like a mess. Itna makeup!! Halloween right here!" he said keeping a serious expression.
"I knew it! Tum zaida der ke liye mature reh hi nahi sakte. You have to show your moron side!" she said moving away.
"Apne aap ko sheeshe main dekha hai. Go…do the mirror mirror on the wall thing the evil witch did in Snowwhite" he said pointing towards the mirror.
"Tumhe toh main baad main dekh loon gi!" she said pointing a finger at him. Then left to go inside the bathroom.
He smiled he could cheer her up. But it was true too, she looked like a mess.
He went downstairs.
"Mom bohat bhook lagi hai. Aaj kuch khane ko mile gay ya…?" he said walking over to Rano who was standing in the dining room.
"Aao na. Geet ka kya hua?" she asked whispering.
"Aap ko pata hai jahan Maan Singh Khurana ho wahan pareshaani nahi hoti" he said proudly.
"Achaji" she said laughing for the first time in the evening.
Sukhdev walked in too.
"Waise main soch raha tha ke kyun na Geet aur Mama Sahana auntie ke paas kuch dinon ke liye chali jaayein" he said now looking at Sukhdev.
"Beta I think that's a wonderful idea" he said in total agreement.
Geet walked down now.
She came and hugged her dad then her mom.
Maan looked at her saying where's my hug?
She ignored him closing her eyes.
When they were all seated there was an awkward silence between Rano and Geet still.
Both the men saw this.
"So it's final both you ladies are going to Switzerland. They need support and you are family" said Sukhdev eating his chocolate cake.
Both the mother daughter looked at each other.
While leaving Maan whispered into Sukhdev's ear.
"Dad I think we did a good job"
"You did it all" he said patting Maan on the back.
After biding goodbyes Maan and Geet were in the car.
"Maan tum bhi chalo gay?" she asked putting a hand on his shoulder.
"No jaan main kaise office ka kaam" he said sadly.
She looked down upset.
"Dekho I'm more upset main tumhe zaida miss karoon ga and waise bhi tumne mujhe koi time nahi diya aaj kal" he said pouting.
"Acha na I'm sorry. I promise I'll make it up" she said blushing.
"Aaj?" he said hopeful.
"Haan aaj!"
