Part 12

Recap: Rahul comforts Nikita and sort out her problems.Rahul and Muskaan are caught during a passionate moment by none other than her brother ,Ranvir.Ranvir however is cool with their relationship.Rahul decides to call it a night and goes to sleep.

Ranvir-(turning back around to face Muskaan)So Rahul huh?

Muskaan-(blushes) Haan.

Ranvir-Interesting choice,par acha ladka hain.

Muskaan-Pata hain.Anewayz main sone jaati hoon,tum bhi so jayo.

Ranvir-Yep! Umm kuch der main sota hoon.Abhi neend nahi aayi.

Muskaan-Ok!Theek hain(ties her hair up in a bun and starts walking up the stairs.)

Ranvir watched her go up the stairs and stared into space; thinking.Ranvir was sick and tired of living the life he was living. The rehabilitation centre had done him a lot of good, but to him his addiction was not yet completely gone. He knew that he longed for some heroin, he was addicted to it before he even knew it..He heaved a sigh as he opened the fridge and poured himself a glass of water. Those memories of him being stoned by the drug constantly infiltrated his brain. He relentlessly injected more as the feeling overtook him. When Muskaan had found out about him being in such a state, she had become numb. To Ranvir this grief of his older sister was enough to try to overcome his addiction.But,the darkness had consumed him, his futile efforts were minute in comparison to the extent of his addiction.Ranvir blocked those horrifying images out of his mind,like Muskaan he had come to Mumbai,only to study.College life made him wary of such drugs,he had soon started enjoying the feeling of being stoned.It was an irregular habit back then,but after graduating it had become a habit.Now he was proud to have put his past behind him,but some things never change;exactly like the past as much as you try to put things behind you,they reappear later.Ranvir switched the light off and went back to the room where he lay staring at the ceiling.

It was morning and the interns had reached Sanjeevani.Their regular hangout was filled with buzz and life as the whole hospital was awaiting the eventful marriage of Armaan and Ridhimma.The interns as usual grabbed their labcoats from the locker room and made way to the nurse station to attend to their regular duties.There Dr Keerti waited for them,just like any other day.She had not changed even slightly after marriage;well that was on the outside.She as usual impatiently waited for her interns to arrive,punctuality had always been the most important thing to her.

Dr Keerti-Good morning Interns,well main aap sab ko duties deti hoon.Aur aap sab ko remind kar doon.Tum sab ke exams do mahine main hain.You guys better start studying and getting your act together.

The intern gang nodded their heads at that statement.

Dr Keerti-Good (looking at her duties chart) Toh Dr Anjali aur Dr Rahul OPD,Dr Muskaan Cancer Ward,Dr Atul Pathlab,Dr Nikita ICU,Dr Armaan aur Dr Ridhimma General Ward.So get to work.

The interns all strolled off in their respective directions.Muskaan started walking grimly to the cancer ward,certain things about her brother were constantly crossing her mind.She remembered those difficult times they had shared trying to revive him from the condition.Due to her brother she had suffered enough grief,all of a sudden she was feeling a bit uneasy about the entire thing.No one except Rahul knew the truth about her brother,she wondered how everyone would react if they found out.

She gazed around the cancer ward,many patients stayed there receiving chemotherapy,some made it and some like Rahul's dad didn't.A shudder went down her spine upon thinking about that,she decided to go and talk to her mom after her duty.Informing her mother about the daily happenings with her brother was what she did.The entire family had started neglegting her brother her relatives alike,her dad had undergone depression after hearing about her brother's condition.He was much more stable now but yet was kept away from the truth.Muskaan and her mom were the only ones who were ready to accept her brother.Everyone else looked upon him in disgust.Forgiveness was not an easy thing for them,as it was for her mom and herself.Muskaan was excited upon the prospect of a bright future for her brother.

Muskaan resumed her duties,checking up on all the patients there.She sweetly smiled at them as to inject some courage into them.After finishing up her duties she decided that she would go and meet with Rahul.Muskaan impatiently made her way to the OPD where Rahul had just come out of assisting Dr Shubankar in surgery.He was washing his hands when Muskaan came and gave him a tight hug.Rahul was amazed by the sudden gesture and returned it by locking her in his arms.Muskaan came out of the hug and stared into Rahul's deep eyes that spoke volumes.Rahul noticed that there was something wrong with Muskaan,he recognized the tension that loomed on her face.He held Muskaan's face in his hands and looked intently into her eyes.

Rahul-Muskaan kya hua?

Muskaan-Rahul,main tumse kuch baat karna chahti hoon.

Rahul-Haan bolo.

Muskaan-Yaha nahi Rahul.

Rahul-To kaha?Theek hain,chalo Fireescape main baat karte hain.

Muskaan-Theek hain chalo.

The two silently walked to the fire escape with Muskaan clutching to Rahul's hand like a little kid.Occasionaly they looked at each other.Finally upon reaching it they took a seat on the steps.Muskaan continued to hold Rahul's hand.Rahul put his arm around her and stared at her intently waiting for her to continue.

Rahul-Muskaan tu kuch bolige nahi,toh phir mujhe kaise pata chalega ki problem kya hai.

Muskaan-Rahul(she gazed into his eyes intently)

Rahul-Hmm…

Muskaan-Rahul agar kissi ko pata chal gaaya ki.

Rahul-Ki kya Muskaan,tera bhai ek drug addict hain toh phir kya hua.Woh abhi abhi rehabilitation se bahar aya hain,he will be fine.Don't worry.

Muskaan-(lets go off his hand and gets up) Rahul agar hamare doston ki pata chal ki mera bhai ek drug addict hai ,I mean tha toh phir woh kya sochenge?

Rahul-Muskaan don't worry,unhe kuch bhi pata nahi chalega.

Muskaan-Aur pata chal gaya to?To phir?

Rahul(gets up) Toh phir hum tab dekh lenge.

Muskaan-Rahul!Main mere dost nahi khona chahti.

Rahul-Don't worry!Kuch nahi hoga,okay.Chill!Chal hum coffee peene jaate hain canteen.

As the two got up to leave,they noticed that someone was coming up the stairs.It was Atul,he gave a wry smile to them,tyring to cover up the fact that he had just heard their entire conversation.Atul beamed at Muskaan,as normal.

Atul-Hi guys!

Rahul-Umm tumne kuch soona?

Atul-Nahi,main toh gaana gar aha tha.

Rahul-Oh rite! Gaana.

Muskaan-Gaana.

Atul-Haan chale,coffee peene?

Rahul-Ya sure chalo,after you (makes a gesture to tell Atul to go before him)

The three made their way out of the room,and then went to the canteen.The whole gang was sitting there.After much convincing from Rahul,Armaan had finally started acting normal towards Nikita.Rahul and Muskaan joined them,gulping down some coffee with them.The two got up after finishing their coffee urgently.Rahul and Muskaan made an excuse and both made their way out of the canteen.

Atul saw them leaving and finally felt like telling the rest of the gang what he had overheard in the firescape.He held his breath,trying to decide on the fact that whether he should tell the information to the guys.He decided that he would go ahead and do that.

Atul-Guys mujhe tum sab ko kuch serious baat baatani hai.

Armaan-Champ tu aur serious?

Atul-Haan,who main abhi abhi pathalab se yahan aa rah tha,shortcut se,firescape main se.Aur maine Rahul aur Muskaan ko baat karte soona ki.

Anjali-Ki kya Atul (who had been listening intently)

Atul-Who Muskaan ka bhai hai na,who ek drug addict hai.

Armaan-What?Are you sure ki tumne saahi saahi soona.

Ridhimma-Drug addict?Drugs?What Muskaan ka bhai,I can't believe you Atul.

Atul-Haan aur who Punjab se nahin,abhi abhi Rehabilitation se bahar aya hain.

Ridhimma-What?You mean ye sab sach hai.

Nikita-Main ek drug addict ke saath reh rahi hoon?

Atul-Haan but he is recovering,or maybe who recover bhi ho chukka hai.

Anjali-Yuck how disgusting!I mean Muskaan ka bhai drugs?

Armaan-Anji tumhe aise judge nahi karna chahiye.Yeh thodi hi Muskaan ka fault hai ki uss ka bhai ek drug addict hai,I mean tha.

Atul-Armaan sahi keh raha hai Anjalimtumhe itna judgemental nahi hona chahiye.

Anjali-Wow the first time Atul Joshi found a fault in me.Par Atul itni baadi baat chupayi,I mean Nikita lives in her house.

Nikita-Anjie,par uski bhi kuch majboori hogi.

Ridhima-Guys stop it! Haame aise lad ne ke bagair Muskaan se baat karni chahiye,I mean we should support her like friends,Hum uske dost hai dushman nahi.

Atul-Haan Ridz sahi keh rahi hain.

Armaan-Main Muskaan se baat karta hoon.

The interns entered the Locker room after their duties to find Muskaan sitting there on one of the benches,waiting for Rahul who was shoving some stuff into his locker.The whole gang stood looking at the two questioningly,wondering who should pop the question.

Muskaan-Kya hua,mujhe aise kyun dekh rahe ho?

Atul-Nahi aise hi,soch rahe the.

Muskaan-Rite,Armaan baat kya hain batayo.

Armaan-Ok main seedhe point par ata hoon,Muskaan kya tumhara bhai ek drug addict hai?

Muskaan's expression changed all of a sudden,she looked at Armaan sullenly and wondered how to answer his question.Rahul gazed at Muskaan wondering what she would tell them.

Muskaan-Haan,mera bhai ek drug addict tha.Ab who rehab se bahar aa gaya hain.He is alrite now.

Armaan-Haame pehle kyun nahi bataaya?

Muskaan-Kaise bataati,tum log nahi samajhte.

Ridhimma-Kya yahi wajaah hai,jis se tum Rahul ke saath America nahi gayi?

Muskaan-Haan,agar main jaati toh mere bhai ka khayal kaun rakh ta?

Anjali-Par Muskaan yeh sab,drugs,addiction,kaise?

Rahul-Anjie,yeh sab poonch na zaroori hai kya?

Anjali-Muskaan(puts a hand on her hand)Agar tum hume pehle bata deti toh phir hum tumhari kuch madat kar sakte the.

Muskaan-Yaane you guys aren't upset about it.

Ridhimma-Hum shocked zaroor hain,par Muskaan ye ,isme tumhara thodi hi fault tha.Just naraaz hain kyunki tumne haame baatana ka socha bhi nahi.

Muskaan-Thanx Ridzie(gives a hug to her)

Ridhimma-Muskaan,its ok.Seriously,I can understand ki tumhari majboori thi.
