Chapter 11: Banjaara
Neil opened the front door to the Mehra household and walked into the foyer. He turned with a sheepish grin. "Sorry Radhika. I can't believe I forgot my wallet again. It shouldn't take me long. I know where I left it."
"It's fine Neil," Radhika replied as her eyes gently roamed along the clean white and beige walls of the house.
"Make yourself comfortable in the living room." Neil pointed to the left before he ran up the stairs.
Radhika politely walked across the threshold and entered the living room taking in the sight that lay before her. There was a subtle defined luxurious comfort in the choices of furniture and accessories that decorated the room. She stood in front of the off-white sectional that was positioned centered with the large flat screen TV hanging on the opposite wall. Her lips curled upward into a smile imagining Arjun watching cricket or the news and then falling asleep on the couch. She tip-toed towards the book case and examined the knick-knacks and novels stored there. Her eyes eventually went to the cluster of family photos hanging on the other wall. That is where Ramu Kaka found her staring at a large portrait of a couple with a garland hung around its corners. Radhika turned towards the elderly man with a timid smile knowing she had intruded on family property and Neil was nowhere in sight to introduce her. "I'm sorry. Hello...my name is Radhika...one of Neil's and---"
"Chotu and Munna's co-worker..." Ramu Kaka interrupted with an affectionate smile on his face.
"Chotu and Munna?" she whispered with surprise.
"Neil and Arjun..." Ramu Kaka corrected. "Yes, I have heard them mentioning you. I'm Ramu Kaka...the Mehra family household caretaker. " He then turned towards the portrait that had captivated her attention a few moments ago. "They were very kind people...no airs despite all they had accomplished...extremely caring and...genuine..." sighing, "I tell Munna---Arjun everyday that they would be proud of him."
"Arjun Sir's parents?"
"Siddharth and Nia Mehra," Ramu Kaka answered.
Radhika's mind went back to the login password that Arjun had given her the night before and realized that he had used his parents' names. "If you don't mind me asking...what happened? They seem so young to have passed."
Ramu Kaka took in a long breath, "The Mehra family built signs for buildings and billboard advertisements. Arjun's father had gone to one of the factories to inspect some of the products when a fire broke out. Arjun's mother was waiting in the car...they were on their way to a charity ball...it was only suppose to be a five minute stop...she ran to find her husband. They both became trapped and...by the time the fire trucks came half the factory and the warehouse was burnt to ashes. Munna was at a friend's house that night. The day before he had an argument with his parents...mostly with his father..." Radhika stood still silently listening to the tragic tale feeling overwhelmed with emotion. Everything that she had felt, sensed, and seen during those rare quiet moments when she had caught Arjun in his contemplative state were now making sense.
"How long ago was this?" Radhika gently asked as her eyes met with Ramu Kaka's when he turned towards her.
"Nine years to this day," he replied, "Munna took a lot of things to heart. And when Neil left for the States...he turned even more inward. Do forgive him for his somewhat temperamental behavior---"
"There is nothing to forgive," Radhika simply answered causing the old man to give a heartfelt teary smile.
"Somehow I knew you would say that."
They both turned when they heard Neil come running down the stairs. "Found my wallet! Radh---Oh, Ramu Kaka..." Neil saw them standing in front of the portrait of his aunt and uncle and understood what they may have been discussing. "So you've met Ramu Kaka," Neil said directing his attention towards Radhika trying to change the atmosphere in the room.
"Yes, I did."
"I'll take my leave. You two enjoy your lunch," Ramu Kaka replied and walked away.
"So shall we?" Neil asked. Radhika nodded and followed him to the door. Just as Neil was about to open it, the door swung open and in walked Nandini. She was caught off guard and held a surprise expression across her face. "This is my Aunt Nandini," Neil introduced. "This is Radhika Mishra, a friend...she works with me at Birdsong."
"Very nice to meet you Radhika," Nandini greeted. "Please forgive me I am in a bit of a hurry. Left some papers I needed."
"We were on our way out for lunch. I left my wallet at home and we had to turn back around and get it," Neil explained.
Nandini laughed, "I guess this forgetfulness runs in the family. If you will excuse me." She walked towards the staircase and then turned before they had left. "Radhika, please come and visit again."
"She'll be coming by the house more often," Neil replied while Radhika simply smiled. "See you later." Nandini stood by the staircase with a gentle grin and watch the young couple leave before heading up the stairs.
Neil laughed along with Radhika as she finished telling a funny story about a time when she and her siblings had gotten in trouble with their parents for sneaking out one night to see shooting stars on a school night. Neil picked up his glass of iced coffee and took a long drink. He then looked over at Radhika and confidently asked, "So when are you going to ask your question?"
"Question?" Radhika repeated.
Neil smirked, "Don't try to hide it. I've very good at these types of things. I know you have a question. You've had one you wanted to ask since we left the house. But maybe you are keeping it to yourself because you don't want to pry. I respect that...but I also know that if Ramu Kaka trusted you enough to tell you then you have a right to ask your question."
Radhika gave a pensive look and then gently spoke, "Today's the death anniversary of Arjun's parents..." Seeing Neil give a solemn nod she continued, "What was he like before? Was he extremely close to his parents? It just...I've heard he wasn't always like this? I mean you knew him differently before...and now."
"That's three questions. You're two too many past your limit." Neil watched as Radhika's eyes went wide and an immediate apologetic look flashed across her face. "Neil...I..."
"I'm joking," he grinned making sure she understood he wasn't offended. "We grew up together...almost inseparable...less like cousins more like brothers...best friends. He was much more carefree back then...laughed a lot more than he does now. Aunt Nia...Arjun's Mom is my Dad's younger sister. That's how we are related. Our grandfathers, Mr. Vijay Mehra and Mr. Manoj Malhotra were best friends so naturally there were hopes that someone's beta and beti would get married. Luckily it was a love marriage so no drama and heartbreak. Aunt Nia and Uncle Sid were cool parents...sometimes I wished they were my parents instead...I guess I was jealous when I was younger...the whole family doted on Arjun a lot. He had a close relationship with his parents so when they passed it was hard for him. And one month later I was in America. Because of the time and distance apart I never truly saw how much their death impacted him. He was here in Mumbai while I was in San Diego. I couldn't help him through that time period," sighing, "When I first got here I thought it would take some time to warm up but it would soon be like old times again...it's almost been a month and he still prefers to stay at home. All he concentrates on is his work. Family responsibilities took a priority in his life and that's about all he seems to have room for."
"It's only him and Aunt Nandini living here in Mumbai?"
"Yes, his grandparents are living in the states," Neil replied.
"Oh, with another son or daughter?"
"No with my family." Radhika saw the usual cheery smile on Neil's face disappear causing her to be concern. "Arjun's grandfather is seeking treatment in the States. My grandfather couldn't see his best friend suffering. So he helped him come to California to get treated."
"Oh no," Radhika replied with shock. "How is he?"
"He's stable now," Neil answered.
"I can see how much responsibility Arjun Sir has. And having to deal with so much at the age of 19."
"I sometimes wish he would understand that he's not alone in all of this...that I'm here too...I can share some of that burden too. Aunt Nandini has been through a lot as well...trying to make Shine LLC Events Managing a success...and now it's one of the top 25 events managing companies."
"I'm noticing a theme here...advertising and managing...the Mehra family business. It makes sense that Arjun Sir would like marketing," Radhika mused.
"Yea, I guess you are right," Neil chuckled.
"Don't worry Neil. Everything is going to be all right. He's had to face a lot of things alone but he's not alone anymore we're here."
Neil looked at her with curious eyes, "We?"
"You, me, and Sam...we're friends and Arjun Sir is your cousin and best friend...friends help friends..." Radhika explained with a gentle smile.
Neil's lips curled upward into a huge grin, "Sammy was right about you. You just want to help everyone. You're too sweet," shaking his head as a sudden thought crossed his mind, "Chashni...that's right...fits you perfectly...Chashni."
"Neil and your nicknames," laughing, "What do you call Arjun Sir?"
"Arjun Sir," Neil replied with a straight face making Radhika laugh even more. "I'm serious. Why are you laughing? " He then broke into a soft chuckle unable to contain his amusement to his own joke. "You know he's in his twenties like the result of us...you don't call Sam, Ma'am why do you add the sir?"
"Because he's my boss...Arjun Sir."
"Okay, but outside of work?" Neil inquired.
"Arjun...Sir is Arjun Sir," Radhika replied with innocence.
Standing in front of the window with her arms crossed Nandini silently nodded in agreement with what had just been discussed. "That sounds about right. I think it will be ideal to go ahead and move forward with that," turning around to face her companion, "It's good to anticipate but nothing is steadfast. We will have to wait and see how things turn out this coming week."
"Don't you think you are being too lenient? We are taking a lot on chance," replied a man in his early fifties with a full mustache.
"You catch more flies with honey, Rana. I've waited years for this. I've come this far and I'm not going to make any rash decisions that will jeopardize all of it." Nandini took a calming breath and gently looked at the photo frame on the office desk. "He deserves this much...what was ours will be returned."
Nandini and Rana turned towards the doorway when they heard the gentle rattle of tea cups. Ramu Kaka walked in and placed the tray on the coffee table. "Chai. Is here anything else you like?"
"No thank you," Nandini replied with a smile.
"Please let me know if you need anything else," Ramu Kaka said before he left the room.
Rana glanced at the doorway for a few minutes before he spoke again. "Is it wise to have these conversations here?"
"Don't worry about Ramu Kaka. He's been with this family for years. He won't say anything. Trust me," Nandini firmly replied. Rana still looked uneasy but said nothing more on the subject.
"Thanks for lunch and ice cream Neil," Radhika replied as she stood at the front door of her and Sam's house.
"My pleasure Chashni," smiling brightly in return.
Noticing how he was teetering side to side on his feet she offered, "Neil you want to come in for some chai or coffee?"
"I'm so full Chashni I don't think I can eat anything or drink another drop, but could I use your restroom?" Neil replied back making Radhika giggle.
"Sure," she said as she opened the door and let him in. "Past the kitchen second door on the right."
"Thank you."
A few minutes later Neil walked out of the hallway into the living room. "So you and Sam are renting this house? It's a really nice place."
"Is that the real reason why you wanted to come in?" Radhika joked. "See what our place looked like?"
Neil grinned shaking his finger at her, "Nice joke."
"Sam's room was the last room down the hallway to the left. She has the master bedroom...in case you were wondering."
"Wow Chashni..."
"I can't help you tease Sam?" Radhika inquired with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
"No, what I mean is you're awesome!" then pointing at her, "You..." then at himself, "and Me...are going to be friends for life. It's a beginning of a beautiful partnership...partners in crime." Neil grinned widely as Radhika laughed at his remarks. "Deal?" he asked as he offered his hand.
"Deal," Radhika replied and shook his hand.
"Well, it's been fun but I have to head out now. I have some errands to run. I'll see you Monday," Neil waved.
"See you Monday Neil. Drive safe," Radhika said as she bid farewell to him. She stood on the front balcony and watched until Neil drove out of sight before she headed back into the house.
Radhika sat down on the couch and turned on the TV to see what was on. She had just finished one load of laundry and had put the second load in the washer. Her leather bound journal was sitting on the coffee table closed as she had scribbled her thoughts down for the day. She sighed to herself as she flipped through the channels finding nothing particularly interesting to watch. Her eyes shifted straight to her phone when she heard it start to ring. She quickly picked up the phone and smiled, "Ridheema Di! How are you doing?"
"I am doing very well. It has been a long time since we chatted hasn't it?"
"Feels like ages," Radhika replied. "How is Jiju and little Ved?
"They are both doing well. I would put Ved on the phone but he's out at the park with his grandparents."
"Well maybe next time."
"Your Jiju has a bet with some of his office co-workers on how much weight they can lose in a month," giggling, "I tell you Choti he is taking his diet extremely serious. All the junk food has been thrown out of the house. He's given strict instructions to me and Mummy-ji that we are to use less oil and no ghee in the cooking. Papa-ji is so upset. He's been eating out for lunch every day at the office! But Mummy-ji thinks it is great...she's been trying to put Papa-ji on a diet for ages."
"But he's eating out now," Radhika replied with concern.
Sighing, "Yes, that is the only hitch. We're trying to figure out how to stop him from doing that. And you won't believe it...he's been selling his tiffin to couple of my students!"
"Really? Well, if they are willing to pay for it then food cannot be that bad."
"Correct. We are finding alternative ways to make the food healthy without losing taste. I think everyone has gotten accustom to it now." Ridheema said. "Mummy-ji has even lost some weight."
"That's great. Is Jiju going to stop all of this after the competition is over?"
"Mummy-ji and I have discussed this and we decided even after the month is up we aren't going to change the way we cook. It's healthy for the entire family in the end."
"That's good," Radhika agreed.
"You know Ved just adores that fire truck you bought him," changing the subject, "He plays with it almost every day."
"I'm so happy to hear that. I'm so sorry I couldn't make it back to Hrisikesh for his birthday," Radhika said apologetically.
"We missed you for sure but I understand things have been hectic for you at work. How are things at Birdsong?"
"Better...we have two new hires---"
"Arjun and Neil? They're cousins right?" Ridheema interrupted.
"How do you know about them?" Radhika asked with surprise.
"Because Ma and Dadaji told me a little about them," she giggled. "Heard Arjun has been bothering you?"
"Where did you hear that from?" Radhika inquired wondering just what their mother and grandfather was telling everyone else in the family.
"Relax Radhika...you don't have to get hyper," her sister replied. "Dadaji just mentioned the story about your brainstorming session and how you and him got into this argument---"
"It wasn't an argument...it was a discussion," Radhika explained.
"Okay, then this discussion...and he was deterring every idea you had. And not to mention that mobile phone he keeps asking you to pay for. What is wrong with him?"
"There's nothing wrong with him. After I had some time to reflect, some of those ideas weren't the greatest. In the end we came up with something else...which I did have a lot of input on. And the mobile phone...it did get ruined because it fell into the pool because I did accidentally bump into him. So I can see why he would be upset about that. He's not as bad as you think or I made him out to be."
"Choti are you defending him now?" Ridheema asked with amusement. "You weren't so forgiving sounding when you were talking to Dadaji about these things earlier. Has something changed in the equation?"
"Changed? Why would something change? Nothing's changed," Radhika quickly replied. "Is Ma still worried? She's not asking or saying that I should come back to Hrisikesh again is she?"
Giggling softly, "I see you're trying to change the subject."
"I'm not. I talk to Dadaji about my office problems because Ma usually can't handle it. She immediately starts to tell me that I should come back to Hrisikesh because she gets easily worried."
"You still have that bad habit of saying everything. I thought by now you'd stop with that. Sometimes it's okay to not report everything in your life to Ma and Dadaji. Well, mostly Ma because you know how she can get. Dadaji gives great advice but sometimes he's not good at keeping secrets," Ridheema said.
"Did Dadaji say something?
"Not really. Though he seems to really like this Arjun character..."
"He does?" Radhika replied with confusion in her voice. "Neil's the nicer of the cousins."
"Oh really? Something there then?" Ridheema pried.
"He's a friend. He's like best friends with Sam as well. Nothing like that Di."
"You'll let me know when it does happen, right? You know I sometimes worry about you..."
"This is not the marriage talk again is it? I'm working on my career...there is more than life then marriage," Radhika replied.
"I know life is more than just that. You don't know how proud I am of you chasing your dreams...you're living them Radhika. Just like life isn't all about marriage it isn't all about a career either...it's a balance." Taking a pause, "They've found a girl for Saral."
It was now Radhika's turn to pause. "Oh," she simply stated at first. "I'm glad he's found someone. He deserves to be happy."
"It took him a long time after the engagement broke to even agree to let Mummy-ji look for him. You know he's always been sweet on you since grade school," Ridheema said.
"They're still upset about it?" Radhika timidly asked.
"No of course not. I hope you don't think I am telling you so you and Saral can patch up. I heard what he had said. This is the modern age and if he can't catch up with the times and stop that old fashion way of thinking...that girls only grow up to be married and to serve their husbands then it's his loss in the end."
"How did you hear about that?" Radhika asked.
"Your Jiju overheard that conversation you guys had. Thank goodness he isn't anything like that. He didn't say anything to the family but he did have a private chat with Saral and told him to stop. Obviously he didn't listen...but that was in the past...no need to bring this up. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable Choti."
"I'm not uncomfortable," Radhika honestly replied.
"I was just hoping you found someone. You know I still haven't heard your thoughts on Love."
"Love? How can I possibly tell you anything about that when I don't know anything about it? I know Friendship. No one is as fortunate as you and Jiju...you guys liked each other from the beginning...a love marriage. All I know is that it can't possibly be like all those dramatized movies...music playing, bells ringing, and leaves blowing across the way when you see that one." She heard her sister laughing loudly on the other end and grinned, "I'm right aren't I?"
"Yes, it isn't as dramatic as that. But I guess you will understand once it does happen and I hope it happens soon for you. Well, Choti I have to go now. We'll talk soon?"
"Yes of course," Radhika replied. "Bye Di...send my love to everyone."
"Of course. Love you!"
"Love you too!" Radhika answered with a smile and then hung up the phone. She checked the time on her phone and had a contemplative thought before getting off the couch to make herself some chai.
Arjun nodded along and smiled giving a firm handshake to the man standing across from him. "It's been a great pleasure Mr. Lee."
"I look forward to seeing Birdsong's submission," Mr. Lee said smiling at Arjun and Sam. "Do enjoy the party...the food and drinks."
"Of course. It's spectacular," Sam replied as she looked about the large event banquet room. There was a great classic and stylish vibe to the party.
"Our events team does know how to pull out all the stops. It's quite an elegant black tie affair," said a woman wearing a long sweetheart black satin dress as she offered her hand, "Janet Lai, Human Resources."
"Samaria Khanna, Marketing Manager at Birdsong Advertising. Nice to meet you."
"Arjun Mehra also from Birdsong Advertising...International Marketing Manager," Arjun said taking her hand into his for a handshake.
"I see...John here was your ultimate target. Now that you've already found him...you can relax and really enjoy the party." Everyone politely chucked at the joke.
Their conversation was soon interrupted when they heard someone talking from the podium. "Attention please...thank you everyone. Where is our Financial Executive Mr. Kevin Chan and his wife Mei? Please come forward...yes there they are. Kevin and Mei are very dear to the Singapore Airlines family. Today they celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary...and instead of attending their own party they are here with us tonight for this special charity event...please give them a round of applause." The room soon filled with a plethora of servers carrying trays of glasses filled with champagne to offer to the guests for the toast. "To Kevin and Mei Happy 40th Wedding Anniversary!" the announcer led as the banquet room echoed the same wish. "Hold on...we are not done yet. Band, please..." The lights soon dimmed as the live band started to play a romantic tune for the anniversary couple to dance to. "Kevin and Mei, if you be so kind to do us the honor of opening up the dance floor for this evening?"
Sam smiled as she held onto her champagne glass watching the celebrating couple dancing across the dance floor. It gave her a warm satisfying feeling inside to see two people still so in love after all these years. The crowd gasped and cheered as Kevin playfully dipped Mei. They danced a few more steps before Kevin walked up to the podium and invited everyone else to join them on the dance floor. Sam turned as Mr. Lee offered his hand. She graciously accepted it and placed her glass on a table before walking out onto the floor with him.
Arjun was feeling a whole array of emotions as memories of his parents started to flood his mind. He uncomfortably tugged at his collar and then pretended to fix his black bow tie. He knew what was required of him at the moment and he turned to Ms. Lai offering his hand while hiding his emotions under a stoic facade. Polite chit chat was made as he glided with Ms. Lai across the floor. Eventually, Mr. Lee danced over and offered a partner switch. Arjun nodded and took Sam's hand into his. He lightly placed his hand on her upper back and started to move them across the floor.
"I'm surprise Arjun...you're quite good at this. From everything that Neil has told me you don't like to dance," Sam said trying to start a little conversation.
"I don't dance but I do know a thing or two about ballroom dancing. I took a few classes when I was studying in London," Arjun replied as he twirled her. "I figure it would come in handy for these types of occasions."
"I want to apologize for yesterday...if I said anything out of line regarding your parents."
Arjun looked at her with mild wonder. "It's fine. Perhaps I was being too sentimental. I also left abruptly."
Sam smiled and changed the topic, "Can you believe 40th anniversary? I hope one day I will be able to celebrate that with my husband. It just seems such a long time especially in this day and age where divorce is so prevalent. I am sure they must have their ups and downs...takes a lot of strength and courage to continue...and maybe even luck?"
"No, when it's meant to be...no matter how tough the situation becomes...neither one can leave the other," Arjun replied surprising Sam.
"Do you think people have to work really hard at their relationships?" Sam curiously inquired.
"People these days give up too easily or fall too easily for the facade of love," Arjun answered.
Sam looked at him in awe. It was twice today he said something out of the ordinary. "Do you believe in love?"
"That is a loaded question Sam," Arjun replied as he moved them to the side of the dance floor before he lowered his hands and turned to walk away. He stopped when he heard her speak.
"Since we met who needed to we don't have to stay for the entire party. Why don't we get out of here and go back to the hotel? We can pack and turn in early for the night...we do have an early flight to catch."
Sam sat at the hotel bar sneaking small glances to the man sitting to her left. She had thought he would have turned her down but he accepted the invite to have a few drinks before turning in for the night. They had conversed in some small talk while they drank but she could tell there was something preoccupying his mind. Radhika had been right he could be difficult to read.
Arjun took another sip from his beer mug. He was trying the local brew, Tiger Beer. He didn't know why he had taken Sam's invitation to sit at the hotel bar. When he was at the party all he could think about was coming back to the hotel and going to his room. But now that he was here he was feeling restless and didn't want to return to the empty room. Yet, as he continued to sit at the bar he didn't want to be there either. There were so many thoughts going through his mind that he couldn't keep his attention on anything. He looked to his right when he heard Sam tell him that she was heading to the restroom and would be back. He simply nodded and took another drink of his beer. His phone buzzed in his pocket causing him to take a look at the message he had received. His eyes just stared curiously at the words on the screen.
Sam came walking out of the restroom and was surprised to find Arjun missing from his seat. The bartender soon appeared and handed her another drink. "With compliments from the gentleman that was sitting here. He apologizes for turning in early." Sam took the drink and sat back down at the bar. "Arjun Mehra you are quite a mystery," she muttered softly to herself. Her hand instinctively reached for her phone when she heard her ringtone go off. She grinned at the name displaying on her screen. "Neil," she answered cheerily.
Arjun's shoes along with his socks had been kicked to side of the entrance way the minute he entered his hotel room. He tossed his black jacket on the armchair and then undid his black bow tie leaving it on the dresser. He unbuttoned his white dress shirt and threw it on the bed. His black belt was the next to go. He then opened the mini fridge and took out a bottle of water. Twisting the cap with easy he took a long cold drink and looked out the window of his room. The city lights below him illuminated the dark night from above beckoning the young and young at heart to join in the festivities of the Singaporean nightlife.
Arjun rubbed his hand along his chest as a little water had spilled from the bottle down the front of his white under-tank. His ears perked suddenly to the sound of his mobile phone beeping and took a look at the message. A tiny grinned formed along his chiseled face as he sent back a reply.
He walked over to the desk and browsed through the afterhour's menu. Having decided on his meal of choice he gingerly picked up the hotel phone, "Hello, Room Service? This is room 1801 I'd like to place an order..."
Sam was in her pajamas comfortably sitting underneath the covers with a few pillows propping her up with her mobile phone tucked under her ear. "So you two went to the restaurant and had paneer without me?!" Sam whined.
"It was delicious," Neil replied rubbing it in. "The garlic paneer, the mutter paneer, methi paneer, palak paneer, paneer bhurji..."
"W-w-wait...you guys ordered that many paneer dishes?" Sam asked with disbelief.
"Nah, I just thought I keep listing as many paneer dishes I could think of to mess with you," Neil teased.
"Neil!" Sam complained and then asked, "You had the garlic paneer?"
"Of course I told Chashni to order what Sammy likes for me to try."
"Chashni?"
"Radhika...Chashni is her nickname. You're always saying how sweet she is and how she always help people. So Chashni..." Neil explained.
"I like it! Chashni...it fits her perfectly," Sam replied with a grin. "So did you try the chocolate rasmalai?
"It was sold out for the day. So we went for ice cream instead."
"No worries...when I come back we can go back and have some," Sam said. "You'll take me out like you did for Chashni?"
"Of course Sammy. You're footing the bill?"
"That's not fair Neil. You took Chashni out," pouting, "Why am I footing the bill?"
"You're the big boss...you earn more than I do."
"Hey hello...who's living at their relatives house...no rent or bills to pay?" Sam retorted.
"Joking...joking..." Neil replied with a chuckle.
"That was a PJ."
"PJ?"
"Poor joke...Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Don't tell me you haven't seen that movie? Hello...Kajol and Shahrukh Khan. You were still in India at that time."
"I was like 8 or 9 at the time," Neil replied. "But I did see the film later. I just don't remember that line."
"I think we need a movie night," Sam replied. "Okay next weekend we are having a movie day."
"After I take you out for lunch?"
"Correct," Sam said with a giggle.
"Oh, you check your email? Amit's brother sent us the official wedding video and the ones he and his cousin took at the wedding. I think they turned out better than the official one," Neil informed.
"Don't let Asha catch you saying that. You know how much she spent on the photographer and video crew?"
"It's the truth though. Why didn't they get Amit's cousin to do the shooting?" Neil asked.
"Because he wasn't sure if he was going to even make it to the wedding. He was super busy at work," Sam explained.
"Well, aren't you going to watch it? You know Asha will want your opinion."
"Okay...okay...hold on let me get my laptop," Sam said as she got out of bed.
Arjun sat outside on the balcony patio chair with his feet crossed resting them comfortably on the cushioned foot stool. He had his mobile phone titled to the side watching one of wedding videos that Amit's cousin had made. A soften grin appeared on his lips as he saw Neil, Amit, Radhika, and Sam dancing to Desi Girl at the Mehendi. His eyes followed Radhika as she moved across the stage. He couldn't help but focus on anyone but her. The enthusiasm in her dancing was hard for him to ignore. He wondered how someone could possibly be this cheerful.
Jise Zindagi Dhoondh Rahi Hai
What my life is searching for
Kya Ye Woh Makaam Mera Hai
Is this the same destination?
Yahaan Chain Se Bas Ruk Jaaon
Just to rest here forever peacefully
Kyun Dil Ye Mujhe kehta Hai
Why does my heart wish that?
Jazbaat Naye Se Mile Hain
I've found new emotions
Jaane Kya Asar Ye Hua Hai
I don't know that this effect is
Ek Aas Mili Phir Mujhko
I've found a new hope
Jo Qubool Kisi Ne Kiya Hai
As someone has finally accepted me
As Arjung continued to watch the Mehendi video he saw the dancing performances shifting over to scenes of people getting their mehendi done. He saw Radhika and her friends with their palms up displaying their mehendi to the camera giggling without a care. The sight only deepened the grin that was already etched on his face. The video then ended with messages from friends and family members wishing Asha and Amit a blessed married life. His finger lazily hovered over the screen causing it to pause just as Radhika came into view with her personal message. His eyes lingered gently taking in her features.
Kisi Shaayar Ki Ghazal
Like some poet's beautiful poem
Jo De Rooh Ko Sukoon Ke Pal
Which gives a moment's peace to the soul
Koi Mujhko, Yun Mila Hai
I've found someone...
Jaise Banjaare Ko Ghar
As if a (lonesome) wanderer has found a home
Naye Mausam Ki Sheer
Like mornings of a new season
Ya Sard Mein Dopahar
Or afternoons in the winter
Koi Mujhko, Yun Mila Hai
I've found someone...
Jaise Banjaare Ko Ghar
As if a (lonesome) wanderer has found a home
Arjun clicked on the next video and chuckled to himself. The words "Masti Time" flashed across the screen as background scenes of the water fight that had erupted at the pool hours before that night's sangeet scrolled by. He was surprised that Amit's cousin had managed to capture all these playful moments. His eyes subconsciously searched for Radhika as the video played. He soon saw his own image appear with Neil instructing him to be the bait as he and some of the boys hide on the balcony above ready to pour buckets of water when the girls came running into the courtyard. He remembered being clabbered by water balloons before the attention shifted towards Neil and some of the other guys there. His eyes found Radhika in the midst of the crowd laughing hysterically as she threw water balloons while she was being shot at by water guns. Arjun found himself captivated by her mirthful aura. She made everything look so simple and fun.
Jaise Koi Kinara, Deta Ho Sahara
Just a shore that offers support
Mujhe Woh Mila Kisi Mod Par
I found her on some turning
Koi Raat Ka Tara Karta Ho Ujala
Like a star that shines at night
Waise Hi Roshan Kare Woh Shehar
In the same way, she lightens up the city
Dard Mere Me Wo Bhula Hi Gaya
She made me forget all my pain
Kuch Aisa Asar Hua
She cast such an effect on me
Jeena Mujhe Phir Se Woh Sikha Raha...
She is teaching me how to live again
Arjun's attention was soon shifted as he saw his phone start to ring. Recognizing the number he answered, "Hello..."
"Sorry Sir..."
Arjun put the conversation on speaker and went to his text messages. Staring at the picture of the home cooked palak paneer and the messages "Did you have dinner? How's the party food?" he smiled. "Were you trying to tease me Radhika? They have Indian food here in Singapore."
"I know they have Indian food but did they have any at the party?"
"Is that really home cooked palak paneer or did you order out and put it in that bowl there?" Arjun inquired.
"It's homemade," Radhika replied with a smile on the other end. She was in her living room standing by the sliding glass doors staring up at the night sky. "Sorry about earlier Sir. Dadaji called..."
"You don't need to apologize. Family is important. Everything okay?"
She had been nervous that her plan wasn't going to work. That he would simply ignore her messages but when he texted her back she had become giddy inside. And just as she was thinking about what to write in her follow up text she received a call from the family that she had to attend to. She was surprised at his message when she informed him of the call. He simply stated he would wait.
"Everything's fine Arjun Sir," she answered. "Dadaji just had a question about the laptop. Ankush Bhaiya wasn't home to help him. And then Ma wanted to ask me how my week had been and Papa came home early from the shop today so I talked to him too..."
"Oh..."
Radhika felt a sudden panic rise inside her stomach. Knowing what she knew now about the importance of today she promised herself that she would avoid any topics revolving parents. But she had slipped up. She mentally cringed at her words and stuck her tongue out at her mistake. "So, um...did you eat Arjun Sir? What was the food at the party like? I've never been to such events..." she quickly blabbered.
"Can you hold on a moment?"
"Sure." Radhika uneasily replied. She heard some rustling noise and what sounded like the phone falling and then silence. He hung up on me, didn't he?! Radhika! You and your big mouth! She silently berated herself and began walking in circles around the living room. "Arjun Sir? I'm so sorry...are you upset with me? I didn't mean anything by it. Hello?"
Arjun was standing by the door quickly signing the bill the room service attendant had handed him. "Thank you Sir. Have a good night," the attendant said as he took the leather bill holder.
"Good night," Arjun replied and locked the door. He then rolled the food cart back towards the little sitting area in the room. He arched his eyebrows wondering why Radhika was rambling away on the phone. He picked up his cell phone from the bed and answered, "Radhika, what are you going on about? I told you to hold for a minute. I understand you like to talk but this is a bit much..."
"Hello Arjun Sir? Did you really hang up on me this time? Hello? Radhika to Arjun Sir...Hello? "
"Hello Radhika...I'm right here. Why are you---"Arjun paused in mid sentence when he realized she couldn't hear him.
"Hello, Hello, Hello. Maybe I should call him again? What if he doesn't want to talk to me? Maybe this was his subtle hint? That's just rude. Why are you so rude Arjun Sir? Mr. Grumpy...nostrils flaring when you're angry..."
Arjun checked his phone and saw that she was on mute. He chuckled and hit the un-mute button. "So I'm rude now? And you are back to calling me names?"
"Arjun Sir?" He smirked as he could picture her with bulging eyes and a shocked expression on her face. He let her take a few minutes to recover while he closed the sliding glass door of the balcony.
"I tripped and almost dropped my phone on the floor...knocking it around in mid air it fell on the bed. Must have muted you by accident," Arjun answered before he ate a fry from his plate.
"Are you eating something Sir?"
"Yes. When you attend these types of events sometimes you don't get a chance to properly eat because you are busy networking," Arjun explained.
"What are you having?"
"A chicken sandwich with fries and a small side salad," Arjun replied. "And why do you keep asking me if I ate?"
Radhika stopped pacing unsure how to answer him. Food was the one subject she thought she could talk to him about without alarming him. She had racked her brain all afternoon trying to decide how she should approach this little mission of hers. She had thought of work questions to ask but none were good enough to hold an actual conversation. She'd kept imagining him telling her they could talk about it on Monday. Sending pictures of food was harmless and asking about food was a safe way to start a conversation; or so she thought. "I don't know..." she meekly confessed.
She heard him softly smirk, "My Mom use to ask me that question all the time..."
"I'm sorry," Radhika replied with guilt.
"Why are you sorry?" Arjun ask with innocence.
"Um, I..." at a lost of words she mumbled, "reminding you of your Mom..."
"I love my Mom...she was a great person...really warm and caring...smelled like jasmine blossoms all the time..." Radhika remained silently stunned at his sudden revelation. It was as if he was caught in some far off memory. "Morning, noon, and night she would ask me that...if I ate...or calling me to come eat...Munna, it's time for breakfast...if I was at a friend's house studying...did you have your afternoon snack?"
"Arjun Sir..." Radhika softly comforted. She heard some ruffling and then when she heard his voice again he was back in the present. "I'm putting you back on speaker...and while I eat you have to tell me a story."
"A story?" she replied baffled.
"You love talking...I'm sure you have something in that head of yours," Arjun replied.
Jasie Baarish Ka De Tarr
Like the rain which drenches everything
Ya Marham Dar Par
Or the satisfaction that one has after applying ointment on the wound
Koi Mujhko, Yun Mila Hai
I've found someone...
Jaise Bangaare Ko Ghar
As if a wanderer has found a home
Naye Mausam Ki Seher
Like mornings of a new season
Ya Sard mein Dopahar
Or afternoons in the winter
Koi Mujhko, Yun Mila Hai
I've found someone...
Jaise Banjaare Ko Ghar
As if a (lonesome) wanderer has found a home
"That's a horrible story," Arjun said when Radhika had finished talking.
"Beggars can't be chooser Sir. I wasn't prepared to tell a story," Radhika huffed.
Arjun wiped his mouth with a napkin and leaned back into the sofa. "You're better off telling me what you did today."
He heard her take in a breath before replying, "Neil took me out to lunch today."
"Oh did he now? He didn't make you pay did he?"
"No, he paid...he said it was his treat for helping him out at the office."
Arjun's eyes went wide at her response. "Really? I always foot the bill when we go out. So that's what he's wasting his money on...lunch dates."
"It was the first time...and it wasn't a date like that."
"So he took you out to lunch..." Arjun continued.
"We went to your house first. Neil forgot his wallet...and I meet Ramu Kaka."
"You did?" Arjun inquired with surprise.
"Yes, he's a very nice man."
With great curiosity he asked, "Did you talk to him?"
"Yes I did but only for a short period of time. And then we went for ice cream...I mean we went to lunch and then had ice cream."
"Ice cream?" Arjun repeated.
"Yes we went for ice cream because they ran out of the chocolate rasmalai."
He could hear her pout on the other end making him smirk. "I take it this is some really good chocolate rasmalai?"
"Yes Sir, the best! In fact the paneer dishes at this restaurant are to die for. You have to try them."
"And which one is your favorite?"
"Hmmm...it's hard to decide they are all really good but I always get the mutter paneer when I go there."
"You love paneer?"
"It's the best." Arjun chuckled at her dreamy reply. "Why, don't you? What do you like to eat Arjun Sir?"
Muskaata Yeh Chehra, Deta Hai Jo Pehra
This smiling face is protecting me
Jaane Chhupata Kya Dil Ka Samandar
Yet no one knows that is hiding in the ocean of her heart
Auron Ko Toh Hardam, Saaya Deta Hai
She gives shade to everyone else
Woh Dhoop Mein Hai Khada, Khud Magar
While standing in the sun herself
Chot Lagi Hai Usse Phir Kyun
Even when she is wounded
Mehssos Mujhe Ho Raha
Why do I feel the pain
Dil Tu Bata De Kya Hai Iraada Tera...
Oh my heart! Tell me what are your intentions
Arjun rubbed his eyes as he laid in bed barely able to keep himself awake. He turned towards his phone and stared at it. It was resting on the pillow next to him with the screen off but the voice on the other end was still going. He hit the button on the side and squinted as the screen came to life. The light was near blinding in the dimly lit room. As his eyes adjusted he couldn't believe the time.
He didn't know how it got to be so late. After their food discussion they watched Asha and Amit's wedding videos together reliving some of the fun and interesting moments in Goa. From there their talks went to other random subjects: pets, cars, travels, news, movies. "Radhika..." he softly breathed.
"Yes?"
"How are you still talking? I've been quiet for the last ten minutes," he said.
"What time is it?" Radhika inquired in her own amusement. "Wow? Really is it 2:00am?" then suddenly gasping in realization. "Sir, it's 4:00am in Singapore! Why didn't you say something?"
"You don't have to shout. We are the only two people awake right now...well, maybe except for Sam and Neil..." He lazily grinned as he heard her laugh.
"They probably are awake...uh...ahhh..."
Arjun sat up and cradled the phone in his hand. "Radhika? Are you okay? What just happened?" He had heard her yelp in pain and then a sudden thud and crash. "Radhika? Please answer me." His heart felt relieved when he heard her mumble "Sorriee..."
"I got off the couch and my foot got caught underneath and I fell...I think I stubbed my toe...aw, it hurts..."
"Go take care of that foot..."
"I'm okay."
"Don't tell me it is the same foot with the bad ankle," Arjun said. Hearing her whimper he continued, "It is...isn't it?"
"Arjun Sir, I'm sorry I kept you up all night."
"I have to be up in the couple hours from now so it doesn't really matter. Radhika, go ice your toe."
"I'm getting ice from the freezer." He could hear the sleepiness in her voice and despite how tired he felt he wasn't going to hang up the phone until he knew she was safe in her bed.
"I'll stay on the line until you get to your room."
A few minutes later he heard the sound of what sounded like her bedroom door opening. "I'm in my room. Goodnight Arjun Sir...actually Good Morning..."
Arjun smirked, "I'll see you later at the airport."
"Yes, at the airport..."
"Radhika..." Arjun said letting his voice linger a bit.
"Yes Arjun Sir?" Radhika stood still as she waited for the silent pause to end. Her lips curled upward in satisfaction when she heard him say, "Thank you..."
"Goodnight," Radhika simply answered.
"Goodnight."
