Chapter 18

As soon as the ward boys brought out the stretcher, they took Raghu straight to the emergency room. I was worried. "Aap ko gadi dekh ke chalani chaiye," I said. "Dekhiye maine kaha na ki I'm sorry. Woh achanak se meri gadi ke saamne aa gaye they aur accident ho gaya," he said. Before I could say anything else to him, the nurse came up to me and said, "Unohne bahut blood loose kiya hain, hume unko blood charana padega." "Toh phir aap wait kiss cheez ka kar rahi hain? Jaldi kijiye na," I said, almost shouting at the nurse. "Ma'am, usse phele aap ko yeh form fill karna hoga," she said. She handed me a form and I filled it out. When it came to the section where it asked what relationship I shared with the patient, I checked off wife. I didn't know why, but I just did. "Toh Mrs. Singh, hum un ka blood transfusion jald se jald shuru karenge," she said. "Please jaldi ki jiye," I said. I was really worried for Raghu. Since it was an accident case, the police were called and I gave my statement. The other guy gave his statement as well. The police were going to be staying there until Raghu regained his consciousness and gave his statement. After he was done, he came and sat next to me. "Dekhiye, main jaanta hoon ki mere maafi maangne se zayaada kuch nahi hoga-" he said. "Toh phir aap maafi maang hi kyun re hain?" I said. "Woh, main... mujhe jaana chaiye," he said and got up. "Waise, main aap se ek baat kehna chaata hoon," he said. "Boliye," I replied. "Aap ka concern dekh ke lag ra hain ki aap apne paati se bahut pyaar karti hain," he said and left. After he left, his words echoed in my head. Was I, was I falling in love? And that too with Raghu? Did I love Raghu? I finally understood why I felt the way I felt whenever I was around him. It was love. I was in love. Antara Kaul was in love. With Raghu.

I was sitting on the chair outside the room when the nurse came out and told me that the blood transfusion was done and Raghu was out of danger. "Thank you Bappa. Kya main usse mil sakti hoon?" I asked. "Ji, par unhe abhi tak hosh nahi aaya hain," she said. I went into Raghu's room and slowly walked up to him. His head was bandaged and he had hurt his right hand as well. I sat down on the stool next to him and took his left hand, the one that wasn't bandaged. I just looked at him. I couldn't believe it that I was in love with him. It seemed like a dream. I squeezed his hand tighter and he slowly opened his eyes. "Raghu, tume hosh aa gaya? Ruko main abhi doctor ko bulake laati hoon," I said and was about to go to the doctor when I felt a tug on my hand. "Miss Kaul..." I heard Raghu say with a weak voice. "Haan Raghu, main yahin hoon," I said. "Miss Kaul," he said again. "Raghu, tum please mujhe jaane do. Mujhe doctor ko bulana hain," I said. I was feeling shy. Everything felt different now. He wasn't just my friend any more. He someone special, very special. He finally let go of my hand and I went to call the doctor. He did his check up and said that Raghu was stable now.

I saw Antara come back into the room with the doctor. She had a different look in her eyes. Had something happened? The police had come in as well and I gave them my statement. I waited until they left and Antara came back. I called her and said "Miss Kaul, kuch hua hain kya?" "Nahi, mujhe kyun kuch ho ga," she said. "Nahi, woh baas tumari aankhen," I said. "Kya hua meri aankhon ko?" she asked. She wouldn't look at my face. She only looked at the ground. I let it go. There was no point. She wasn't going to say anything. "Nahi kuch nahi," I said. "Ab tum aaram karo, mujhe laagta hain ki mujhe Aunty ko phone kar dena chaiye," she said and left the room.

I went out of the room and called Rukhsana aunty. "Antara, tum log kahan ho?" she asked as soon as she picked up the phone. "Aunty woh main aur Raghu baar aaye they aur Raghu ka, Raghu ka accident ho gaya," I said. "Kya Antara? Raghu theek toh hain na?" she asked. "Haan Aunty, woh bilkul theek hain. Doctor ne kaha ki hum kal subhe usse ghar le kar aa sakte hain," I said. "Shukar hain Allah ka. Tum wahin ruko main Mach Mach ko bhejti hoon," she said. "Nahi Aunty, it's ok. Main hoon Raghu ke saath," I said. "Par beta, tum bahut thak gayi hogi," she said. "Aunty, main theek hoon. Agar kuch bhi hua toh main aap ko phone kar doongi," I said. "Theek hain beta, agar tum itni zid kar rahi ho toh tum wahi ruk jao," she said after a long pause. "Main kal subha Mach Mach ko bhej doongi, woh tum dono ko ghar le aayega." "Ok Aunty," I said and cut the call. I went back to the room and saw that Raghu was sleeping. I went and sat on the couch in the room and eventually fell asleep.

"Mrs. Singh, Mrs. Singh," I heard someone say. I opened my eyes and saw that the nurse was standing in front of me. "Haan, kya hua?" I asked. "Woh, aap ko aur aapke pati ko lene koi aaya hain," she said. "Theek hain," I said and got up. "Mrs Singh I see," I heard a voice behind me. "Mrs. Antara Raghuveer Singh. Yehi likha tha na tumne form par?" I turned and saw that Raghu was awake and was sitting there. I looked back down at the ground. "Woh form pe aur koi option nahi tha, issi liye," I said. "Oh, I see. Issi liye kal raat tum mere paas yahin beti rahi thi, hain na?" he asked. "Tum toh mere dost ho na? Main itna bhi nahi kar sakti? Aur waise bhi, maine aunty se kaha thi ki main tumare paas rukogi," I said. "Raghu, Antara," Mach Mach uncle said as he walked in. "Chalo, ghar jaane ka time ho gaya hain." "Ji uncle," I said. After completing the formalities for Raghu's discharge, we sat in the car and went home.
