A short and bittersweet innings from the returning Samson on his World Cup debut. Three sixes in the first two overs of the match, one down the ground off Ruben Trumpelmann and two flicked off the hip off Ben Shikongo. And a delicious drive for four over extra-cover as well, off Shikongo.

And then he plays a shot that he doesn't quite commit fully to, off the last ball of the second over, and flicks one straight into deep midwicket's hands. How does one judge a batter's form and rhythm in this format? The same things that many of us were blaming for Samson's poor run of form leading into this tournament were in evidence today too, even when the ball was flying off his bat: the trigger movement deep into his crease and towards the leg side. Even the six down the ground, off an ostensibly front-foot shot, was played with both feet inside the crease. Like everything else, these trigger movements come with trade-offs and aren't good or bad in isolation.
