At 57 for 0, South Africa were racing along after having won a crucial toss on a pitch with variable bounce, but 102 runs and 10 wickets later - it's India who have had the better bargain.The openers started positively, Rickelton was off to a flier while Markram took 23 balls to open his account, but it was followed by a passage of boundary-laden scoring shots. Bumrah bowled a lengthy first spell and was finally rewarded in his 6th over - one followed the other and the visitors had lost both openers in no time, so did Bavuma in his comeback Test. At 71 for 3, the hard work of the first hour seemed to have been wasted, but Mulder, de Zorzi and Kyle Verreynne - all got started and all fell in pretty much similar fashion. Tristan Stubbs tried to rally with the lower order, but he was left stranded as Bumrah returned after tea to skittle out the last two wickets. 31 by Markram remained the highest score and that isn't going to win many Test matches. Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding for his 5 for 27, Kuldeep was excellent as well, Mohammed Siraj had a slightly off-day, but he too chipped in with two wickets in an over. The bounce has been variable and this isn't an easy pitch to bat, but this ain't a 159 all-out pitch either. Can the Indian batters make most of the bowling efforts? Back shortly for India's reply..

5/27 - Jasprit Bumrah is the first fast bowler since Ishant Sharma, D/N Test against Bangladesh at the same venue in 2019, to pick a five-fer in the opening day of a Test in India. The last to do so in a red-ball Test was Dale Steyn in Ahmedabad in 2008.
