I know I'm late to this conversation but I just finished all three books and I'm still spilling from excitement. I had forgone watching the movie, until i read all three books, so this coming weekend, I'll see it.
As for the books!!! I loved it!!! I resisted reading the books for a while now, because I thought it was going to be an over hyped sensation like Twilight, but I'm so glad it proved me wrong. The Hunger Games have now become my second most loved series, second only to Harry Potter (and that is some high praise)
I became so invested in these characters that I must admit, i cried more than once throughout the series. (Rue😭)
There is so much to say about these books, but in the interest of time (and the fact that I should get back to work) I just want to say, I loved the ending sooo much!!!
"Real or not Real??... Real" Gosh that made me melt!! Aside from the Love Story (and I figured out, who she would have choosen by the second book, even though she wasn't quite sure until the last page 😆), the book had some serious themes about freedom and resistance, loyalty and friendship, which is part of the reason I loved it. It was more than about the central charaters. It had a message!!!
And now to close off, as much as I don't like Twilight, I must resort to some of the fangirl fanatics and say empthatically "GO TEAM PEETA!!!!"
I agree with every single thing you mentioned. I didn't read the trilogy for a long time because I just couldn't digest the concept. I don't have much stomach for violence, so when I got the basic synopsis, I thought that's so not my kinda book. Then I kept hearing just great things about it so thought okay, it's worth a try. I can't dismiss it without reading. And well, the rest, as they say, is history.
I couldn't stop reading.. I think I finished the trilogy over the weekend (and paid for it the next couple weeks because I didn't do anything I was supposed to get done over the weekend 😆)
The best thing about this was that even though the love story was an important part of the story, it was much more than that. It was about freedom, loyalty, humanity, friendship, trust, beliefs. That made it so much more valuable for me. And yes, it stands to be one of my favorite series too.
SPOILER ALERT!
I loved Peeta since the first page he was introduced. I just never saw Gale and Katniss together.. I mean I like Gale, but I always saw him as a good friend of Katniss. But that's it. So there aren't any teams for me. It was always Katniss and Peeta.. they were always meant to be. I mean in 73 years, there was only 1 victor. This year both Peeta and Katniss survived. They won against all odds.. and not just once but many times. When Peeta was rescued from the Capitol, he was hijacked and badly. But still, they grew back together. If there's anything so strong that can overcome anything, anything at all, it's true love.
Many things in the third book just totally melted my heart..

"I must've loved you a lot."
"You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real?" "Real.. because that's what you and I do. We protect each other."
"You love me. Real or not real?" "Real."
Even though I admire Katniss for her bravery and loyalty for her family, I think she can be pretty manipulative, selfish, and cold at times.. I didn't like that about her.. but many times in the third book, my heart went out to her.
Especially when she figures out that Snow is using Peeta to break her, and she falls apart... looks for Haymitch only to comfort her because he's the only one besides her who loves Peeta. One of the very few times I actually cried for her.
And back to The Hunger Games, Rue's death scene always makes me fall apart.. it did even in the movie.. I was crying 😭
