October movie review: Varun Dhawan's seasoned act brings alive Shoojit Sircar's 'flowery' vision on screen

By Ankita Chaurasia | Published:Thu, April 12, 2018 8:02pmVarun is subdued to the point of being unrecognisable in the film. He is a study in innocence.

Right from the first look of the film, Octoberhas been an enigma. The trailer, which is usually supposed to offer a glimpse into the film, in this case only serves to further intensify the mystery. We are left pondering as to who is Dan, why is he doing odd jobs and why is Banita bed-ridden, and what transpires between the two. There is just one thing that we are absolutely sure of a Shoojit Sircar film seldom disappoints. With high hopes and much curiosity, we head to the press screening of October and here's what we think of the film...

What's it about

Danish aka Dan (Varun Dhawan) is a hotel management trainee, who seems to be completely lost. His colleague, Shiuli (Banita Sandhu), on the other hand, is quite purposeful and determined. While everyone else goes about their daily duties quite diligently, Dan seems to question everything without any reason, thus annoying his seniors and affecting his grades. Banita, on the contrary, has the answer to most questions. Life seems to be pretty mundane, when, thanks to a freak accident, Shiuli slips into a coma. While this seems to be the end of the world to her family, Varun suddenly finds a purpose. He becomes obsessed with Shiuli offers hope to the family when even doctors can't, monitors her progress, and even gets her groomed, all while compromising on his job. But why is Dan so obsessed with Shiuli, especially when they barely even spoke before the accident? Well, we will let you find that out when you watch the film.

What's hot?

Let me take a moment here to gush over Varun Dhawan. What an absolute delight he is! A far cry from his street-smart avatar in his last movie outing, Varun is subdued to the point of being unrecognisable in the film. He is a study in innocence. Don't be surprised if you find girls around you squealing in delight at his naivete. There are times when the film gets a little too much to handle and it is then that Varun's charm comes to its rescue. Apart from Varun, who is running quite a one-man show, there's Geetanjali Rao, who, as Shiuli's mother, is so subtle and restrained, it breaks your heart. As for the film, it takes its time to grow on you. Shoojit's penchant for capturing the essence of Delhi with wide angle shots continues with October too. You can almost feel his presence in the film every time there is a poignant moment between two characters or each time a character has an internal communication of some sort. It is just as tangible as the underlying emotion in the film that of love. It is so rare to find a film that doesn't hammer the point or tries to tell you that love should be a certain way.October let's love be. It leaves the emotion open for the audience to decipher in their own way. Just like the flower, Shiuli, that blooms first in the month of October, love, in this film, is sublime almost to the point of being invisible. But if you pay attention, the fragrance will draw you in and keep lingering for long after. Such is the impact that for hours later, you will still be pondering. It is evident that Shoojit wasn't playing to the gallery while envisioning this flowery' film.

What's not

After being shrouded in mystery for so long, the film doesn't have much to reveal. There's no suspense here and that seems to be the film's biggest letdown. While we love it that Shoojit's films use the pause to effectively drive across the point, here it seems to be overused. The pace of the film can be a real deterrent. Some scenes have been unnecessarily languished over and could have been done away with on the editing table. After promising a lot during promotions, Banita Sandhu's debut leaves much to be desired. While present throughout, she barely has anything to do in the film. Not saying that she should have looked pretty and run around trees in her debut film, but being bed-ridden for more than half of the film is not a good idea either. Also, it would help if we had a little more insight into Dan. Why was he the way he was now that would be a good thing to explore in the film.

What to do

If you while away your time reading poetries, thinking about soulmates, finding the meaning of your existence in sunsets, comparing life to flowers, and questioning your place in the universe October will certainly be worth your while.

Movie Review, October: The Beauty Of Silence

Shoojit Sircar spellbinds you with a tale which indirectly spells out that love is so shallow in today's times of hook ups. October is something that you must watch, whichever generation you belong to...
Movie Review, October: The Beauty Of Silence

After Piku (and Pink, which Shoojit Sircar admittedly directed), he along with Juhi Chaturvedi (Writer) has dished out a beautiful love story which despite being told sensitively screams out: Love is about caring, love is about being patient, love is definitely not about touching. Millennials, are you reading this?

This gem combo of Juhi and Shoojit is a gift to Bollywood. The duo yet again make a lasting impression in this love story, which does not stretch a minute beyond 2 hours (interval included).

A Still From October Movie

Varun Dhawan proves yet again (after Badlapur) that he's not just a dancing star who is out to raise laughs alongside. This Dhawan is an actor.

Watch him in the scene where he loses it and pounces on a hotel guest. Watch him in the scene where his voice quivers while talking to Banita Sandhu's mother. Watch him in the scene where he gets last warning to shape up or ship out on his job, which barely makes his two ends meet.

You may feel that the debutante Banita Sandhu has a very easy role, but it's quite otherwise. Static Banita has to give a range of expressions in her entire portrayal. This 20-something girl comes out with flying colours.

The scene where Banita finally mumbles to Varun that she loves him is the highlight of the film.

A Still From October Movie
A Still From October Movie

A special word for the camera work by Avik Mukhopadhyay. Avik makes a simple love story look tremendously ethereal. The first half is a trifle slow, and while you may have mixed feelings about the movie at the interval point, the second half rockets rapidly and compensates to shake you up at various points. The end will shock you and drill the correct meaning of true love.

Besides the unpredictable ending, you will not know until 3 minutes before close that why Shoojit titled this movie as October.

I am going with FOUR.

October

By Shubarna Mukerji Shu Thursday, Apr 12, 2018 08:18: PM
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Banita Sandhu
Director: Shoojit Sircar
Genre: Romance/Drama
Release Date: 2018-04-13
Language: Hindi
Rating: 4/5

Have you seen how quietly flowers fall to the ground in autumn? It takes so long for them to blossom, to find their beauty, and once they have lived, they simply fall to your feet, for you to fall in love and make that circle complete. There is no thunder, there is no declaration but there is such potency that you cannot help but feel it. That is Shoojit Sircar's October for you.

Dan (Varun Dhawan) is all of 21, he is young and he wants to do more in life. And sometimes, more is only about complaining, and ranting about how he deserves more than graveyard shifts at Delhi's elite five star hotel. It is not easy being a hotel management trainee, but the bunch of them are doing well. That is, until Shuili (Banita Sandhu) has a mishap.

For someone who has been rather lax with life - the uncertainty of it, the vulnerability of it hits Dan right between the eye, as do Shuili's glazed eyes. With a determination he didn't know he possessed, Dan starts journeying with Shuili through her illness. Not leaving her side, giving her support when she lies limp, seemingly unaware about his presence by her side even... it is sweet, it is sad... it is life.

The USP of the film lies in the fact that never once does Shoojit make the matter too grim for laughs. You don't do hee haw in the film but you smile through your tears, all because there is a person out there, calling shots who knows how life is for us people. We don't have a forewarning background score predicting doom, but we know sh*t happens and we wade through the waters like we must. A lot about Dan is not about what is right and wrong, it is about doing what needs to be done. The relationship between Suili and Dan is best expressed in one scene where they acknowledge each other. It's raw and sublime at the same time.

Nothing is rushed in the film, so a lot of it stays with you even as you walk away from the theatres, there are moments you wished you could see again, but if you are a Varun Dhawan fan expecting to see something fun, romantic... You may have to skip this turn, and wait for his next release. Dhawan has outturned himself through October. He is a regular bloke who is not trying to impress. He is sweet, and loveable by default but he is stubborn too. It is his stubbornness that transcends into Dan and through him to Suili that makes the connect, the bond so precious. It is clear that this was Varun's I-will-prove-my-detractors-wrong moment and he totally nailed it. You expect him to go over-the-top in a few scenes but he is visibly reigned in.

Banita is beautiful and poignant even in scenes even those where she doesn't move a muscle. She does her part beautifully. As does her mother (Geetanjali Rao). In fact, even the smallest portions have actors who have done justice to their parts...so the credit to it all lies with Shoojit Sircar's direction.

Something about having him calling the shots, and having Avik Mukhopadyay doing the cinematography, completely changes the topography of Delhi. Through their eyes the city seems to have come to a standstill even while the traffic moves... How do they do it, they alone know! To conclude, with Juhi Chaturvedi's writing, the impeccable direction by Sircar October is a beautiful journey, but if you are running late, you might as well skip it, wait for the years to catch on... perhaps then the pace won't matter as much as the cru

October Movie Review: Varun Dhawan Blooms In His Finest Act Till Date For Shoojit Sircar's Unusual Story About Love
October Movie Review

Let's be honest here, October is highly anticipated because we are getting to see a different range of Varun Dhawan as an actor. The movie is directed by Shoojit Sircar with whom Varun Dhawan is collaborating for the first time. Double mint girl Banita Sandhu is making her Bollywood debut with the movie. Like the trailers hinted to us, October is not a movie you usually associate with any Bollywood mainstream leading star. Check out our review below,

Dan (Varun Dhawan) and Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) are hotel management trainees in a five-star property in Delhi. While Shiuli is smart and and an achiever, Dan is more laid-back and irresponsible. Moreover, they are friendly just on professional terms. In an unfortunate accident, Shiuli ends up in a coma. After what was supposed to be a casual visit to the hospital, Dan gets obsessed about her well-being, especially when he learns last thing Shiuli asked before her accident was about him. But is that curiosity reason enough for Dan to nearly ruin his career to take care of her? Or, the bigger question - will he be able to bring her back to normalcy when even the doctors doesn't have much hopes?

October is not like any mainstream movie you have seen in Bollywood. In fact, save for Varun Dhawan's casting, there is nothing mainstream about it. There is no romance to say, even though the movie is about love. There are no songs to act as speed-breakers, or some big twist to say. There are no explanation or exposition about how certain people are behaving. October moves at its own leisurely pace as it wants us to get along with Dan in trying to revive Shiuli.

In short, October is an odd piece of cinema and sometimes that works in its favour. It is not everyone's cup of tea, and will definitely leave you with mixed feelings. There are questions you want to ask - like why is Dan obsessed with Shiuli's condition even before he knows she asked about him? Is he himself suffering from a psychological disorder himself or is he just naive? How is Shiuli's mother managing to afford her daughter's exorbitant medical expenses? Are Shiuli's friends right in not visiting her much as Dan because they have priorities in life?

October makes you ask these questions but never provides the answers. Instead it is just interested in moving along the journey of the two main characters - one who is trying to get back to life and the other trying to find why she asked about him in her last conscious moment, even if it meant ruining his life. And even when it isn't interested in answering questions, October does add a particular nuance to the issue of euthanasia - isn't the victim the right person to decide whether the plug needs to be pulled or not?

Like I said, October is odd.

But there is charm to that oddness. Even when the movie is mostly confined in the air-conditioned grimness of the hospital, Sircar manages to find wry humour, mainly through Dan's naivety in understanding what's going on around him.

The dewy visuals by Avik Mukhopadhyay brings out a never-seen before beauty in Delhi, focussing more on the quaint quietness rather than the bustle. Shantanu Moitra's soft, mellow notes adds poignancy to the proceedings. Shoojit Sircar uses these aspects to add a lovely halo around Dan and Shiuli's bonding, even when the screenplay offers not much to do. In fact, if you are looking for any scene to make an impact, you might be sorely disappointed. The languorous pace might also shake off your interest at times. In these weak moments, what holds October together is Varun Dhawan.

Can I say October is Varun Dhawan's best performance till date? Oh yes, I can! Shorn of his stardom or his entertaining quirks, this is quite a disarming performance from an actor, who is more known for his Dishooms and Judwaa 2s. October rides on the broad shoulders of Varun and he never lets his director down even for a moment. You will fall in love with the laid-back innocence of his character and will feel for him when reality check drives a wedge between him and Shiuli. With this act, Varun Dhawan can acquit himself of a couple more Judwaa's. Okay, fine, let's not get too ahead of ourselves.

In her debut role, Banita Sandhu doesn't get much scope in terms of histrionics. But she does manage to convey a lot through her eyes. Gitanjali Rao who played Shiuli's mother, is fantastic.

On a separate note, being a hotel management student myself (not exactly a success at that), can I ask how Dan gets so many good opportunities in his career despite being such a bad trainee?

Yay!

- Varun Dhawan's career-best performance

- Supporting cast is good, especially Githanjali Rao

- The lovely visuals and the background score

- Shoojit Sircar's assured direction

- Finding wry humour even in tense situations

Nay!

- The languorous pace will be off-putting to general audience

- Some character traits of Dan never explained

- Nothing unusual about the plot

Final Thoughts

October can boast of Varun Dhawan's most interesting, finest performance till date. His performance adds a lovely hue to what can be seen as Shoojit Sircar's dreamy take on life, love and death. Normal cine-goers might find the snail-pace proceedings difficult to ingest. October is a palatable fare to those with a taste for cinema that goes beyond mainstream.

October Movie Review: Some Stories Are Beautifully Incomplete!

Some love stories can't be questioned and this is one of them.

April 12, 2018
October Movie Review Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star Cast: Varun Dhawan, Banita Sandhu, Gitanjali Rao, Sahil Vedoliyaa.

Director: Shoojit Sircar

October Movie Review

What's Good: When you've Shoojit Sircar directing a film that's written by Juhi Chaturvedi starring Varun Dhawan; the question of what's good should be considered as invalid.

What's Bad: This depends on who's watching the movie, if you're someone who can't digest slow films then there might be pace issues for you but if you're someone like me you'll grace many beautiful moments.

Loo Break: Again, if you're the former person you might get tempted to take a break but if you're not you'll sit throughout.

Watch or Not?: Some love stories can't be questioned and this is one of them. So if you've the patience to dump the feeling of imperfection, you can watch.

October is the story of Dan (Varun Dhawan) and Shiuli (Banita Sandhu); both are hotel management students working for the same hotel. In a group of other employees, these both don't interact much. Dan is this hooded-hunk who's blunt and innocent possessing the qualities of a carefree teenager. Dan is disturbed with his professional life because his honesty usually lands him in trouble.

Shiuli, on other hand, is this smart junior employee who's more focused on her career. A certain incident makes Shiuli hospitalized but her last question of "Where's Dan? revolves in Dan's mind throughout. The entire story revolves around how Dan falls for this bedridden Shiuli in the quest of searching an incomplete piece to fill up this incomplete yet beautiful puzzle.

October Movie Review: Script Analysis

Written by Juhi Chaturvedi this might be the most brave attempt by her. Despite such tragic narration she keeps the proceedings light. Sometimes a writer goes deep into a story and can't decide where to stop, this is what Juhi suffers with this story. The script of October is beautifully incomplete. The narration gets repetitive at times and explaining too much drags the plot.

There are some portions which will provoke you to ask questions but as I told above some stories should be left as they are. Justification could've result in losing the essence Shoojit and Juhi have maintaned. The build up could've been short, some situations could've been well polished and editing could've been tighter.

October Movie Review: Star Performance

Was this the same guy who swayed us away with his over-the-top performance as twins in his last film? There always come one movie in every actor's career which sets the parameter of his versatility and October is one such movie for Varun Dhawan. His portrayal of Dan is so effortless; at times you just can't believe this guy is acting.

More than Varun Dhawan's performance, Dan has this so realistic traits like stammering a bit while talking which makes one believe he isn't delivering any dialogue but speaking according to the situation. Banita Sandhu is verbally absent through the major portion of the film but she has emoted Shiuli with the required charm. Even after this, it's yet to be seen how she manages to dodge long dialogues in her upcoming films.

October Movie Review: Direction, Music

The mind, who has executed movies like Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe and Piku, could only be expected to do something different with each of his films. This time he has tried to explore a shade of love which was yet untouched in a industry that produces over 1900 films per year. He has tried to infuse too many metaphors and a lot of subtexts in the film which would connect with a certain section of audience.

Shantanu Moitra's background score is the brightest color of this abstract painting. It is a song-less film and the entire film has been carried by the background score itself. The songs could've created disruption and it's good makers decided to skip them.

October Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, go and watch October for Varun Dhawan. He has expanded his range of versatility with this one and Shoojit Sircar has managed to rip out a shade of him which was never seen before.

Three stars!

October Review: An amazingly crafted movie where Varun Dhawan gives his all!

October is an emotionally engrossing film from its first scene to the last one and does not peter out until the screen goes black, something a very few movies manage to do nowadays.

Positive Points: Performances, Direction

Negative Points: Nothing

October Plot:

Most of his college friends, including Shiuli Iyer (Banita Sandhu), are also interning at the same hotel. What happens next, you can find out by watching the film in theatres.

October Review: An amazingly crafted movie where Varun Dhawan gives his all!October Poster

October Performance Review:

Varun Dhawan is a brilliant actor but, sadly, he is only known for his comic-capers. Badlapur was a good change, but then the actor again went back to doing what he is always good at - comedy. October comes as a complete surprise wherein he showcases a different side of his acting prowess. He comes out of his comfort zone like a boss and stuns with his impassioned act. Here, Varun plays an emotionally-charged character who is ready to go all out to be with the girl initially he has no inkling about her liking for him and vice versa. Even for a single second, you will not see him go overboard. He remains in his character throughout the film, and by the time the credits roll, you find yourself in love with Dan. Believe us, Varun Dhawan has delivered his career's best performance in October. Talking about debutante Banita Sandhu, the actress plays her part perfectly well. She does justice to whatever she has been given to perform in the movie. She looks beautiful and emotes a lot through her eyes. Actress Gitanjali Rao, who plays Shiuli's mother, also impresses with her performance. Other actors in the supporting cast also lend their full support.

October Direction Review:

Think about some of the unforgettable films of this decade and Vicky Donor and Pikudo crop up in our mind. So, what made these films special? The story? Performances? Or the directorial skills of the man calling the shots? Well, it could surely not be the magic created only by one thing. It has to be a blend of everything in perfect measures. After giving us aforementioned beautiful films, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is now presenting us his new movie October, in the month of April. After watching his latest offering, you will know how perfectly he has justified the title of the film. October is a beautiful movie that stays with you for long. Filled with emotions, well-placed humor and love, the movie works because it has all the ingredients which have made Sircar's previous films click with the audience story, performances and competent direction. Sircar gets best out of his leading man Varun Dhawan and makes his do things which we generally do not associate with the actor. October belongs to its writer Juhi Chaturvedi as much as it belongs to Sircar. Juhi has created some unforgettable scenes in the movie, which create a deep impact. Her writing is simple and has a sea of emotions running parallel. However, the screenplay of the film should have been more refined. With October, Sircar makes you sit back and enjoy the ride and by the time the film ends and you come out of the hall, you feel a deluge of emotions swirling around you.

October Technical Aspect Review:

October is a very crisp film and the whole credit for its crispness goes to its editor who ensures it that there are not unnecessary scenes to drag the narrative. Cinematography of the movie is also good. There are some landscape shots of Kullu in the second half which take your breath away. Delhi has been captured beautifully in the movie. Another plus point of the film is its background score which flows well with the melancholic narrative. Production design is also good.

October Music Review:

You don't see any song in October on screen but the soundtrack of the film boasts of some good melodies. Its music is as intense and deep as the whole film is. Well-known music composer Shantanu Moitra scores three songs for the soundtrack while Abhishek Arora and Anupam Roy get an opportunity to compose one song each. The song Teher Ja' by Abhishek Arora in the voice of Armaan Malik is a romantic urban number that you would like to hear again and again. The October theme piece by Shantanu Moitra is an outstanding composition. If you have suffered heartbreak recently, you are going to love this song even more. 'Tab Bhi Tu' is a sad love song by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. It could have been a far better song that what it is. Other songs in the album are passable. Overall, the music of the October is such that grows on you over the period of some time, if you listen to it again and again.

October Final Verdict:

Watch this film if you want to see Varun Dhawan in a completely new avatar. He has impressed us with his great comic timing in many films since making his debut. Here, he tries to woo your heart with his simple but subtle performance that has an avalanche of emotions blended magically well. The actor delivers the most sincere performance of his career so far. It should not be missed at any cost. Shoojit Sircar is another reason why October deserves a watch in cinemas.
