The point is, we need men as much as we need women to be not just aware of menstruation but also not be embarrassed about it if there were a discussion on it...That doesn't mean we need to make menstruation a topic in everyday morning meetings at the office

i agree with everything you said. But with these twitter selfies in large numbers everyday...it has become everyday morning topic in office...i am observing that in my office. People have started teasing each other and challenging each other for this challenge followed by paragraphs like tujhe nahi pata yaar bahut jyaada dard hota hain. Pata nahi kaam kaise karte hain...yaar mujhe hotey toh main nahi kar paata...ladkiyon mein badi takat hoti hai sehne ki..and asking us girls randomly...yaar periods ho toh bata diya karo...hum samajh sakte hain. Though they are trying to be suportive of us by saying all this but trust me its really embarassing and i hate it like this.

The problem if the guy does not know about periods? At least half the world is female. His birth is the direct result of the female reproductive system. He might have a sister, wife, daughter, or female friends/colleagues. He has a responsibility to know them, their bodies, the changes they will go through and be ready to support them. Not out of sympathy, but pure human decency that humans owe other humans.

Most humans take care of themselves. But every now and then ask others for help. Similarly, most women do carry essential supplies and do just fine on their own. But they should be able to get support every now and then from others. It has nothing to do with strength or lack thereof.

No guys are most likely not going to carry pads or tampons with them all the time. But if their daughter or significant accidentally runs out, they should be approachable and amenable to help.

Many women work in male-dominated workplaces. Sometimes women maybe on mostly male teams or projects. Sometimes women may not get to interact with other women as often. In such a situation if women get their period early or do not have enough supplies, she should be able to ask her colleagues. A man should be comfortable with a coworker saying they need a tampon and be comfortable going and buying it.

And instead of subscribing to myths and stereotypes that women get moody, hormonal, bipolar, and what not during their period the world would be a much better place if men and women could honestly discuss menstruation without shame. There is a spectrum of reactions from no different from any other day to extreme pain and depression.

I think it is imperative for a human being to understand factors that impact other humans health and well being. I think parents should have "the talk" with their sons and daughters as a couple and share male and female perspectives. Men have the responsibility to be someone their sons and daughters can talk to and learn from. And when a man has a female significant other - he has a responsibility to know about her menstrual health. One cannot use vaginas for sex or babies without knowing how the whole system functions and what it needs to be healthy.

What is the problem if men learn about menstrual health?

the problem is if men really learn in details...they get sympathetic towards women and its human nature. If i will come to know my collegue is in pain...i will try to help and will unintentionally be sympathetic towards her if i get to know she faces this every month. I am not liking this sympathy thing.

So the idea is disgusting? People don't like to talk about it considering it a shame and consider it a taboo but the fact doesn't change that it's NORMAL for all girls and not anything disgusting. The fact that people consider it so is disgusting.

You are making assumptions. All humans do not operate or react in the same way. Not everyone is in pain during periods. Not everyone is overtly sympathetic towards pain. Real conversations are about educating people to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Many handicapped people do not like sympathy. Many cancer patients and survivors do not like sympathy. Do we stop talking about those issues?

If you don't like the sympathy, honestly and openly tell people to cut it out. Why should your aversion to the probability of sympathy deny other people their choices?

I don't like being fussed over. I come from a family that fusses over a minor cold. I set my personal boundaries. But I don't tell them never fuss over anyone because some relatives actually like being fussed over when sick.

Instead of holding pads and getting pics clicked it would be better to work around dismissing the myths and practices that are still prevalent with regards to women during their periods!

Any guy whose been thru high school knows about periods and pads and more than looking upto them to be not ashamed of holding a pad we should work to educate women themselves so that the myths and practices surrounding this natural process go away because its not a man - yr dad or bro who tells u to not touch pickle or to not enter the kitchen during periods but rather its a woman whose gone thru periods herself ie yr mom /sis/gmother who tells u such!

And more imp if this is a natural process then why make so much fuss over it! Too bad its one of those things women have to deal with!

Thank You everyone for your input.

Wise Hippo is withdrawing from this debate. I have said what I wanted to say i.e. this is a stunt to make money and I see it as a conflict of interest. Issue should be raised at other platforms. There I am sure these celebs will be nau do gyara once their movies are done. I am just so fed up of fakeness in life. Yes there is some benefit of course...I however am not someone who gets happy at that. My dislike for fakeness outweighs whatever little good comes from it.

@bold- Sadly the truth. Very unfortunate. I wonder how much 'raising awareness' will happen once the movie has finished its box office collections. I agree there is a fair amount of pretentiousness associated with this challenge, I hope the awareness reaches people and if it does, it'll be worth it IMO.

Also compared to the ALS challenge- along with the ice water, part of the 'challenge' was donating to an ALS foundation whatever amount you could, the icewater way was just an interesting way to get people involved/funny addition. This challenge has no concrete benefits which is why donating these items would have been a good idea.

That's true... A high school dropout, blue collar guy came up with the idea... He worked hard and made it happen despite hostile environment and no wherewithal

Surprised no educated woman though of that
