I really, really want to watch the film, but knowing how faint hearted I am, I don't think I'll be able to stomach the gore and violence :( Anyways, I really hope this movie recovers its cost, cause such movies are needed to make people aware of the plight of such women in India. I even read an article about the sex workers in Mumbai, whose plight is similar -if not worse- to that of Lakshmi's.

GANG OF GHOSTS, LAKSHMI And AANKHON DEKHI Are Washout

''Ragini MMS 2'' dominated box office with some gusto and all other new releases tanked without anotice. Even Hollywood releases went unnoticed due to storm at box office.

''Gang Of Ghosts'' was biggest loser as film collected poor numbers in the range of 50 lakhs on day one. Film had good release size but poor content, unexciting promos and clash hurt it badly. Film is a big disaster as it had cost of close to 12-4 cr.

Other releases ''Aankhon Dekhi'' and ''Lakshmi'' (both releasesd by PVR) were washout and failed to cross even 12-15 lakhs day one total.

Movie review: 'Lakshmi', a face to the countless trafficked girls

The Telegraph, Calcutta

During a crucial interrogation scene in the climactic court proceedings, the 14-year-old Lakshmi is asked by a lawyer to explain what rape is, in front of everyone. Her face turns pale, her body shivers, she is about to break down when she somehow manages to let out one line... "Rape mujhe samjhana nahin aata... Jispe hota hai, woh samajhte hain."

That's what Lakshmi the protagonist says but what Lakshmi the film tries to do is to actually make you go through the horrors of not only rape but all forms of sexual violence. Of the most graphic kind. From hymen-breaking to penis-chopping " and buckets of blood flowing freely throughout "Lakshmi is an extreme experience. Because what Lakshmi " and many, many girls in Indian villages and towns " go through is... extreme.

Having lost his mojo since the brilliant Dor in 2006 " dishing out garbage like Bombay to Bangkok, Tasveer, Aashayein, Mod " writer-director Nagesh Kukunoor is clearly attempting to reboot his career with this star-less, compromise-less, relentless tale culled from a true story.

Lakshmi initially comes across as a very familiar narrative, one whose nooks and crannies have been visited many times on screen. A girl is bought and brought from her village, raped by the pimp before being thrown into a brothel for a successful career in wh**edom. She will try to run away and somehow manage to reach the cops only to find out that the police and even higher powers are all collaborators in this trafficking and sex-trade racket.

But this premise is just the launchpad for Kukunoor who wants to tell a story of heroism in the middle of all the blood and gore, the pain and the penetrations. In Lakshmi, he creates this girl who is innocent and naive at the start of the film but soon becomes aware and wise enough to make every possible attempt to reverse her fate. In that respect, the 14-year-old Lakshmi's struggle for survival is reminiscent of the trials of the 16-year-old Lilya from Lukas Moodysson's groundbreaking Swedish film Lilya 4-Ever.

A big chunk of the second half is the legal battle between Lakshmi and the Reddy brothers who bought her and who run the brothel in Hyderabad in the guise of a girls' hostel. It's in court, as everyone watches and the media records, that Lakshmi puts up her bravest front, not only narrating the details of her damage but also sharing the hidden-cam video of her being repeatedly raped by six customers through one night. That does it.

Despite his no-holds-barred approach, Kukunoor often exploits the plight of his protagonist juxtaposing her sorry state with images from her happy childhood. The background violins go in rudaali mode to attack your tear-ducts and end up melodramatising many a sensitive moment. Even the court scenes are unnecessarily underlined with a soggy TV-soap score stealing the film's subtlety and larger impact.

What keeps Lakshmi real and unflinching are the strong performances from the cast. Monali Thakur, who was first seen in Raja Sen's Krishnakanter Will and then heard in Rituparno Ghosh's Noukadubi as Riya Sen's voice, is extraordinary in her Hindi film debut. Every emotion hatches so easily on her pretty face and then blends into the next effortlessly. You laugh with her, you cry with her and you feel her pain... Lakshmi is more an embodiment than a performance by Monali.

Satish Kaushik, who is also one of the producers of the film, is quietly menacing as the big brother of the girl-buying-and-selling business. In the scene where he rapes Lakshmi, his gestures and expressions make the act look so grotesque and sickening and set the ball rolling for all the abuse to follow. Shefali Shah as the Madam of the hostel who has a change of heart is very convincing. And she gets to do in the film what many women in this country want to do to many men in this country.

Flora Saini as Lakshmi's been-there-done-that friend in the brothel is fun. Ram Kapoor is again very good in his cameo as the lawyer. Kukunoor is obsessed with casting himself in his films and to play around with his facial hair. Here he's got the beard of a goat and as Chinna, the evilest of them all, he is quite effective.

Lakshmi needs to be seen because it gives a new human face to the countless girls being trafficked every day in this country and thrown into the dungeons of sexual slavery. It also talks about this one young girl who fought all odds in her bid to return to innocence. Maybe because she never lost the faith. Even after spending many an excruciating night in the hostel, she sat there whispering a prayer to the little idol on the window sill.

Lakshmi- Undoubtedly the bravest film you will watch this year!

1 Vote

It takes serious guts to even think of attempting a film like Lakshmi, let alone make it. And this is why I have developed a new found respect for Nagesh Kukunoor. The man who seemed to have lost his way in the last few years, returns with a film which I assure will knock the socks off you. A story of a 14 year old girl doomed to a life of flesh trade and her triumphant emergence amidst the debris is the stuff legends are made of. And for that very reson alone, Lakshmi is a legendary film.

The film narrates the journey of 14 year old Lakshmi (Monali Thakur in top form in her debut) who is sold by her father into a life you wouldn't wish for your worst enemy. Chinna (Nagesh Kukunoor) who is the devil incarnate himself is the man who buys her along with few other girls. He is the younger brother of a politician (Satish Kaushik in form after years) who runs a brothel in the garb of a ladies hostel. The film displays in graphic detail Lakshmi's transformation from a child woman to a prostitute. She finds solace in the brothel headmistress (Shefali Shah in a terrific role) and her roommate who understand her pain. As she gets used to the life of a sex worker, she never really lets go her ambition to break free and when a NGO guy comes to the rescue of her and other brothel girls, it is only Lakshmi who stands up for a fight. And along with her lawyer (Ram Kapoor in a terrific cameo), Lakshmi shows the world that its not the age which matters, it's the mileage.
The gut wrenching story of Lakshmi which is supposedly a true story has been narrated in a o holds barred manner by Nagesh Kukunoor which makes it such a riveting watch. And the performances he extracts out of his star cast is just fantastic. In fact it wouldn't be erroneous to say that this is the finest cast ensemble we have seen in a film this year. And the production design which adds to the agony is top-notch. The grime, the filth of a brothel has been duly replicated. And the music by Tapas Relia is strength of the film. Never really interfering and just flowing with the film, the songs leave an indelible impression. Nagesh Kukunoor manages to do the double whammy here. His acting is incredible in the film. To transform from the soft spoken director we know of to the monster he portrays in the film is insanely good. But it is Monali Thakur who takes your breath away as the titular Lakshmi. If it was her voice which won me over in chartbusters like Sawaar Loon and Zara Zara Touch me, its her acting which I have fallen for this time.
Lakshmi is a film which should be made a mandatory watch. It's a film with a heart and soul and most importantly, it doesn't shy away from calling a spade a spade. This is cinema in its truest sense.

First of all hats off to the entire team Monali, Nagesh, Shefali, Satish K and especailly Ram Kapoor what an awesome job for taking up such roles and that too not charging any money👏 👏
Performance wise Shefali left most impact as a mistress who is in the field to get her daughter educated and keep her away from the brothel👏 👍🏼

Then I really liked Moanli she did justice to the role yeah she was raw in few places but I guess being her debut movie and strong performance oriented role was a tough task to achieve. None the less she had that innocence in her face which a 14 year girl from a remote Ibrahimpatnam village has❤️

Satish Kaushik- Boy was I wrong about Nagesh casting him as a Reddy, being one I had my doubts but he portrayed a Telangana Reddy to the T, his body language and antics were bang on.. Also his portrayal of a pedophile was right on where one would feel their skin crawl when you see that scene👏

Nagesh was excellent in some parts as an actor but some parts were meh.. His couple of scenes where he hurts Lakshmi when she tries to run away and the scene where he hits Shefali were awesome where you feel like ripping his throat from the screen👏
I have always felt that what ever Jyothi did to Chinna in the end should be the punishment for all the rapists and pedo's😡

Oh finally Ram Kapoor-- This guy when given any roles does justice to it, he was great in the small role he was given👏

Rest of the cast was good too👍🏼

Story wise it really is gut wrenching, knot twisting and what other similar synonyms can be inserted will be justified😭 But again this Kind have plot have been dealt with in the past like early 90's in lot of Telugu movies although not completely by itself, but as a small part.
Still kudos for the effort to bring out this nasty side of the society👏

Direction wise Nagesh K's Dor and Hyderabad Blues take the cake. With Lakshmi I felt that it was kind of dragged in parts, editing could have been better as I was bored in some scenes.

Somehow in the second half where they show court preceding's which pretty much took me back to 80's and 90's movies where they used to make complete mockery of the justice system, not sure if the situation is still the same😕 but I felt this could have been dealt better.

My rating 4 Stars😃
