Just back from the movie,
I will tackle the review by points-
1. Imtiaz Ali and his career, in my opinion, through all Jab We Mets, Socha Na Thas, Rockstars, Love Aaj Kaals, was leading up to this one film. It is a flawed, problematic film, yes. But his best till date.
2. As someone said above, the love story, the bond between the two broken individuals was so exquisite and delicate that it makes you elated and sad at at the same time. Just like the best love stories do.
3. Alia was fantastic. This role, I felt, was written and created for her and she plays it to near perfection. Second movie, and what range. The scene where she confronts her uncle and shouts at him- brilliant.
4. Randeep. Dude. Take a bloody bow. Imtiaz hardly explored his layered, passionate character, but he shine like a diamond in his role. He looks the part, his accent is sheer perfection, his expressions are amazing. It is a delight to watch his facial nuances shift, and the moment he finally opens himself up to Veera'a charms, and cracks a smile- it was beautiful. A lot of reviews will naturally praise Alia more because the movie is centred around her, but Randeep complements and beautifies the whole film with his eyes, his troubled expressions and his voice. Watch out for the scene where he breaks down- this is what good acting should be. It is criminal how directors are not using his talent.
5. Music- I loved the way Imtiaz singled out Mahi Ve for his stand alone track. It is beautiful, flowing and heartbreaking. I loved the male version of Patakha Guddi as well. It almost reminded me of the old A.R.R after a long time.
6. Now to the flaws, the direction is patchy as always, the beautiful love story and a beautiful layered character of Mahabir was wasted in lots of pointless scenes. It could have been perfect, but the lack of complete focus on Mahabir's character, and the love story, stops it a bit short. But I guess, it is always better to come out of the theatre wanting for more.
Go watch it. You won't regret.

Highway Opening Day Collections

  • 0

Highway has collected Rs 3.5 crore on its opening day at box office. Considering the film's genre and the star cast, Highway opened to a decent response on Friday morning, but picked up quite significantly towards the end of the day.

High-end multiplexes in select cities, were running at more than double the occupancy (60-65%) for the 8 - 10PM shows.

The reports aren't extra-ordinary, but the performances and music of the film have received tremendous appreciation. The unrealistic story has been criticised. On our review scale, Highway has scored 57 with 13 positive, 11 mixed and 1 negative review. (Read the critics verdict).

Saturday could well decide the film's fate at the box office, as most multiplex-targeted films that find appreciation tend to pick up by more than 25-30%. The screen average of Highway is better than a film like Hasee Toh Phasee which released a couple of weeks ago, and that film showed huge growth in business on Saturday.

Highway movie review - A journey which you should surely have for once!

By Ravi Ranjan on February 22, 2014 in Movie Reviews

8.5Appealing!
User Score: 9.7 (1 votes)
Acting Performance: 9.5
Direction: 8.5
Screenplay: 8.5
Dialogues: 8.5
Plot: 8.5
Cinematography: 8

It's difficult to review a film like Highway. It's raw, appealing, heartbreaking, beautiful and breathtaking. More than a film, it's more of an experience, a journey which you should surely have for once.

Story - Veera ( Alia Bhatt ), gets kidnapped from a highway where she is on a sneaky ride with her soon-to-be husband, by a gang headed by Mahabir(Randeep Hooda ). What follows is Veera's jouney where in captivity, she finds freedom.

Cinematogarphy - This film is all about journey and cinematographer Anil Mehta ensures that all the places are beautifully captured in the camera. The mountain sequences are breathtaking and it couldn't have been better.

Direction - Imtiaz Ali is a genius who plays beautifully with stories. He yet again shines through Highway. There are some moments that you might find boring, but the overall experience makes up for it.

Acting - For a moment, it gave me complex that Alia Bhatt is of the same age as me. She is flawless in the film. She makes the character her own and breathes life into it with such an ease that you will forget you are watching a movie.

Randeep too shines in his restrained and raw performance. But, it's Alia's show all the way. There should be a special category of awards next year, just for Alia.

Overall, you might feel bored in slight parts of the film, especially in the second half, where silence takes over and just the eyes and expressions do the talking, but you will be overwhelmed with the climax. And Alia totally seals the deal in the last scene.

As I said, it's an experience which you must have for once.

Highway first day collections - Good figures for a Limited release!

By Editorial on February 22, 2014 in Box Office Reports

Highway had a slow start but picked up in the evening to register collections of 3.35 Cr on its first day, which is a respectable total considering its niche genre and a limited release of just 700 screens. The film has done its majority of business in the high-end multiplexes of Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Gurgaon while its collections in the other parts were lower.

The film barely got a single screen release where the past releases like Gunday and this week's darr @ the mall are running. The film looks likely to have a 14-15 Cr weekend but such films have a very limited audience and its collections post weekend will be very dull as has been the trend with niche films in the past while next week's release

Shaadi ke side effects which is mainly a multiplex oriented film would hamper Highway's prospects.

I haven't posted on IF since ages..I was almost on the verge of totally taking sanyaas from IF and then I saw Highway! Bang! I couldn't stop myself from writing my two cents on the movie that left me speechless. First one being Alia Bhatt's acting. Never ever, never ever ever did I expect anything of this sort from her. Not even one per cent but she made me fell in love with her potrayal of Veera Tripathi.
Highway is nothing perfect or flawless , infact it has it's own share of slow and a some drag moments yet it makes you fall in love with it's flawed self as you fall in love with a flawed human, you start adoring it for being flawed and not perfect or flawless.
The mountains, roads, highways are not just beautiful images, infact they play the role of silent character artists in the movie.
I can't pin point the scenes or instances that made Highway so special to me..It's just the overall impact of the movie, the silence, Mahabir's silence and his smile in a scene, Veera's tears followed by her laugh. Her Ssshh, Alia's dance with Mahabir's friend.
After hating rockstar, I totally gave up on Imtiaz but man he comes with a bang.

After Sushant, It's Alia whom I have extremely under-estimated and never expected to do this good this early but she prove me wrong.
What a movie, what music, what acting.
Last but not at all the least, Randeep Hooda deserves a big big big hug for being Mahabir. This dude is seriously underrated.

P.S. I do feel weird for loving this movie to this extent because it's not a typically beautiful and poetic movie. It's an intriguing journey with some unanswered questions. It leaves you yearning but again with a positive vibe.

It was..it totally was! My point was that that was the only scene which can be thought of as disjointed..I mean why is she opening up all of a sudden..shouldn't she be scared of them?
But that also was a progression in the sense..that it's been show she likes talking..and it's probably her way of telling them why she didn't run away!

I also liked that there was no romantic relationship per se..the whole plan nahin hai thing was beautifully captured!

And also..it reminded me of the holidays we had before flying to the destination was an option..It reminded me of my road trips to Rajasthan and Himachal..and I'd always want to capture all those nazaare..now I can just watch Highway😆

@YusBee-😆
This!
I loved the fact that wasn't any romantic relationship per se. There are hardly any bollywood movies which focus on a bonding between the girl and guy without giving the romantic angle to it.
I don't know if it can be termed as a platonic relationship. Probably not. Probably Yes. It was a bonding without any future plans, without any demands per se. It was just a bonding during their journey, something that becomes extremely precious to both of them, something that gives them the courage to be vulnerable and open up themselves in front of each other. A relation that lets you be vulnerable and lets you show your weakness without fearing the fact of being judged and that too non-romantic one is rare and a pleasure to watch.

I am actually glad that it wasn't a love story..It would have been weird..It was about two people discovering each other and themselves..It's just that the process was cut short..

Okay! Firstly, I love your review..Secondly, I haven't ever felt like this about a movie before😆
I actually didn't see the flaws but I assume the critics are much more cinema literate than me so I'll take their word for it

I've said it before..but I enjoyed the silences in the first half..It was so nice to know that Imtiaz considered us intelligent enough to know how we felt after watching a scene and did away with the unnecessary cues..
Another thing is, movies with such beautiful cinematography are generally described as poetry in motion..Highway is less of a poem, more of an experience

I really hope this movie makes money..because Imtiaz deserves it..I say Imtiaz and not Alia(who according to me owned the movie) because Karan gave us shitty Shanaya..Just proves how important the director is..One of the reviews called Imtiaz an artist..I couldn't agree more!
