TWO TO TANGO

Ranveer Singh has taught a few things to Deepika Padukone, how to stay cool and crack jokes. Divya Kaushik caught up with the stars while they were promoting Ram-Leela
Your attitude, the way you smile and talk easily give away the kind of company you are keeping. And so was the case with Deepika Padukone. She was at ease, cracked jokes and was relaxed. All thanks to co-star Ranveer Singh. "I am reserved, observant, but I think I am changing. I am having fun while these whirlwind promotional tours are on," she commented. The two were here to promote their forthcoming film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela.
Sporting tiny cute pony, Ranveer looked dapper in his fitted blue jacket and trousers. So is he sticking to this tough boy look for long? "I don't think so. I get bored easily and keep changing my look. I once entered Bhansali's office with stubble and he told me I look good this way, so since then I have been like this, sturdy and tough," he said.
It has been a lucky year for both actors. Deepika is still basking in the glory of her last film's success,Chennai Express. Lootera was good in more than one way for Ranveer. "Early on in my career I got a chance to prove that I love diversity. While on one hand I have films like Band Baaja Baaraat to talk about, I also have an experience of Lootera, a very different, intense kind of love story. And now it isRam-Leela. Bhansali is a genius and he effortlessly allows the actor's true talent to come out. I feel so liberated as an actor. I think I have calibrated several levels after this experience," he said. But why is that he has always preferred love stories? "And people also point out that the characters I do are totally contrasting to my real personality. In real life I hate being serious. There is so much to ponder about and so many issues to tackle that we start living with that stress. I don't let that happen. I stay happy and chilled out. But that intensity that I showcase on screen is a part of my personality. I vent out my emotional pressure on screen and in the roles I play, that's why some appear to be so real. But as far as love stories are concerned, it's a coincidence that I have been doing them, though all are different. My friend Manish Sharma once pointed out that I am tailor-made for thriller, action genre, and he is surprised I am doing more love stories. It is actually true. I love watching action, drama films and would do more thrillers now. My forthcoming film Gunday is an action-thriller," he informed. Deepika had her bit to add, "I think he is suited for love stories and that too the ones he has been doing. In his head, he is a reincarnation of Govinda, so the thumkas and those expressions come naturally to him."
Whatever the rumours are in the industry, Ranveer maintained that he is disciplined when it comes to work and doesn't like to party much. "Film industry is far more professional now. Nobody tolerates your tantrums. I don't party a night before a shoot. I avoid watching good movies while I am working on a film. If I watch a film I like, I assume myself to be the hero of that film and start behaving like that actor, which is not right for the character I am playing," he laughed.
The chemistry people have been talking about was very much visible between Deepika and Ranveer. "But isn't that good? When you are promoting a love story and you are two characters of that story interacting with people, it is obvious that people only see the love that's visible in the trailers of the film. I think it's good that people spotted that chemistry and got the idea of what the film will be like," he said.
The actor has just recovered from dengue and says that unwanted break was the last thing he wanted. "But now I am up and about. This is definitely the most busy and happy phase of my career," he ended.
Match the steps
Deepika Padukone shared that the most tough part was to do garba in heavy costumes and jewellery. "My earlobes hurt and during the shoot I had to put bandage because my ears could not bear the weight of jhumkas I wore. Even the lehengas I wore were so heavy that it was almost impossible to dance with that weight. In some scenes which were shot till half body I actually wore sport shoes and danced," said Deepika and added that some of her costumes in the film are heritage pieces. "Like the blouse I wore in the song sequence Ishkiyaon Dhishkiyaon. It was restored and there were many such garments that were a part of heritage collection. The pinks and yellow you see on screen are not found these days," she added. Deepika's costumes were designed by fashion designer Anju Modi and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
