I think there are a couple reasons why DDLJ/HAHK are spoken about more than Gadar today. Even Lagaan is remembered much more than Gadar.
One is obviously they are publicized more because they were backed by bigger PH's, bigger folks in the business...plus they star actors who are still VERY relevant today.. Sunny Deol...well post Gadar, I don't think he has been that popular.
Then DDLJ, HAHK are still aped to this day..whereas Gadar isn't really. Like Anupama was saying a little while back...the two biggest hits of the year are both DDLJ derivatives. YJHD had HAHK in it too ...so those films have stayed fresher in people's minds...and perhaps stood the test of time more.
But yeah what Gadar did was unbelievable. Its not a bad film but nothing great either...a little too jingoistic for me.
yeh thts true i guess...
sunny deol is not as relevant today as the khans or kumars...plus i dunt think gadar is known as a gr8 film...its not like it made a huge impact on pop culture/film genres like the way HAHK, DDLJ et all did...they came during years where action movies were the best grossers so they set a trend...same with lagaan, it was innovative for its times and was trendsetting in the way it was filmed...rahman's music is also very fresh even today..but gadar dosent really have timeless appeal IMO in terms of music, or filming or anything...which is probably why i dunt remember it as much...
also the fact tht when gadar released, it wasnt as much of a phenomenon down the south as it was in the north/punjabi markets (owing to sunny and the theme of the film which was set in Punjab/Lahore i think)...since i was born and bought up in the south, might have missed the amazing craze it had...coz i dunt think it had a pan india appeal/craze like HAHK, DDLJ, 3 Idiots did...those were a rage across the country whearas i think gadar had a ridiculously strong craze in limited regions...
but still, for a film to sell tht many tickets without having pan india appeal is effin huge...no wonder ameesha patel brags abt it even today...thts possibly her only glorious link to the film industry ...
