We have to keep taste of today's audience in mind. HAHK, DDLJ might have broken records then but for now they would have been dismissed as fluffy romance or a TV soap.

The past film which I think could break records is just:

Andaz Apna Apna : Comedy always finds an audience. Aamir & Salman, perfect script, Paresh Rawal at his best. All records shattered!

Karan Arjun might have got huge opening but just doubt its sustenance. The reincarnation theme and all those thakurs, rural stuff would have put off today's audience.

Looking at the recent trend where anything and everything is gaining ground, i'd say any movie even Hello Brother will be a blockbuster 😆

Karan Arjun would be a 500 crore ATBB just because of the cast alone. Though sadly it would suffer from not having Amrish Puri as the villain. But the Salman-SRK combo would make this ATBB even before release.

Take Amrish Puri out and add Prakash Raj as the villain...

Salman + SRK combo itself will give 100 cr day 1 opening if opened on National Holiday, irrespective of other cast, Film would have made 500-600 cr ATBB for sure.

The release of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was a defining moment in the box office history of Hindi cinema. Hum Aapke Hain was a limited release on hand picked theatres by the makers of the film and prints were only given if theatres were upgraded to a certain level. To put into perspective how business changed after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is that before Hum Aapke Hain Kaun an all India share of 10 crore for a big film was regarded as blockbuster business but after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun the blockbuster business figure went to 20 crore.
The data from 1995-1999 is adjusted for inflation using ticket rates while the data from 1990-1994 is adjusted for 1994 value using 6% yearly increase. This is due to the re-run factor as explained in the about inflation section on the website.
