I belong to a Muslim culture and nowadays, people don't use aap for everyone as times have changed but my grandmother still insists and asks me to call everyone aap. She's old but she talks to everyone with aaps and she thinks tum is not nice as its insulting to the other person, not giving them respect.
So for her, aap is used to portray respect to the other person.

I have noticed how in Indian Cultures friends talk in tu yeh karlein tu woh karlein. All my indian friends talk to me like that and they always ask me why do u give us so much respect (although i talk to them in tum) so they find tum odd even but i find tu very strange. I just think its a culture difference. Like my fiance is older than me, he calls me aap and so do I.

Coming to Aditya Zoya, i love it. He calls her tum, she calls him Aap. Sweet lagta hai.
Please saare feminists mere ooper charhaaye na karna, i would have liked it even if it was vice versa. Lol.
