Chapter:8 Distance

Next-day Morning At ETF

All reached the office around 9 AM except the second in command of the ETF. Sree, Chotu, Liza, and Ayesha are sitting inside the conference room and Rathod in his cabin. Looking at no sign of Arjun even after crossing the office time, they frown while looking at the wall clock.

"Guys, where is Arjun Sir? Is he okay? It's almost 10.30 AM in the morning and he hasn't turned up!" Chotu asked, concerned not seeing Arjun.

"Yes Chotu, he never came late to office and I hope he is okay!" Sree agreed with Chotu.

Though this duo scared of his anger and outbursts and occasionally getting irritated with his over attitude still they are concerned about his safety.

Though Arjun always scolds them for their errors, Ayesha and Liza are surprised by the amount of anxiety these two people getting about Arjun's safety.

"Ayesha Mam, Does Rathod sir told you about the Arjun sir whereabouts or any plan?" Sree questioned her hoping to get an answer.

"No Sree, Sameer hasn't told me about Arjun sir's leave," Ayesha answered him confusingly.

"Ohh, Where is Arjun sir by then?" Sree exclaimed

Rathod came out of his cabin after hearing the commotion about Arjun's absence.

"It seems, you guys miss the second in command of ETF more? Do you miss Rawte or his scolding?" Rathod questioned the duo with a smirk on his face.

"No sir, it's already late, and Arjun sir never came late to the office" Sree stammered when answering to Rathod.

"Rawte is on personal leave, will be back after a week" Rathod cleared the doubts of his team about Arjun absence

"What? Is he okay?" this time everyone screamed in worry.

Rathod looked at them with folded hands and said, "Wow, This much concern about that Khadoos Rawte? I'm impressed!"

Everyone awkwardly smiled at Rathod for their behavior.

"If you guys did with the interrogation of Rawte whereabouts, shall we do our work? I need the last murder case file reports by EOD since today we have no fieldwork." Rathod asked them sarcastically.

They nodded their head like an obedient junior, and bury themselves in the paperwork until Rathod move from that place. Once he was out of their sight they are all released a breath.

"Arey Yaar, I really miss Ri now, if she would have been here, the paperwork would be done in a minute," Chotu said proudly thinking about his best friend.

"Yeah Chotu, I too really miss her" Sree agreed with Chotu.

Sree frowned for a min that he forgets the promise made to Riya about calling her every day.

"What is wrong with my memory these days? I often forget things!" Sree questioned himself.

"To forget something you should have a brain, Specky Sen and We know your top floor is empty!" Liza answered with a sarcastic smile on her face.

The look on Liza's face irritated Sree further and blurted out, "Oh Shut up, Miss Liza, Stop interfering in my talks and I didn't ask you a certificate about my body parts and I hate seeing your face already and top of that you are irritating me now"

His rude reply to Liza made everyone to make their faces. Sree regretted his words the moment his eyes met her tears filled brown orbs.

"I'm sorry Liza, I didn't mean to say this " Sree replied guiltily.

Without replying Liza ran towards the laboratory. Ayesha and Chotu are looking at her with concern, whereas Sree also ran behind her to apologize.

~At EFT laboratory~

Liza is weeping continuously thinking about his words, this is not the first time they're fighting, but the ignorance and irritation in his voice making her fragile heart crush almost every time. She is in her own world, couldn't notice someone entered the lab behind her.

Sree heart pained looking her tearful eyes, it made him restless and the reasons unknown to himself. He quietly moves towards Liza's chair to comfort her, but Liza notices his presence and started to move out of the lab.

Sree sees her moving away from him, without any second thoughts, he holds her wrists to prevent her from moving from the lab. Liza turned her head when he tugged her wrists, she patiently waits for his moves.

Sree made her sit on the chair and crouched himself on the ground, but Liza is still looking at the ground with tears in her eyes, so using his index finger he poked her chin up to look at him.

"I'm really sorry Liza, I was in tension that I forget to call her" Sree apologized while wiping her tears with his hands.

"You could have told me politely instead of screaming at me" Liza complained him about his rude behavior

"That's why my top floor empty" Sree agreed with her with a smile.

Liza smiled at him and said, "It's okay, you don't need to come all the way just to apologize "

"I can't see the tears in your eyes" Sree replied her honestly making Liza look at him surprisingly.

Blood rushed to her cheeks after listening to Sree's honest reply.

To make the atmosphere awkward free, Liza looked everywhere for a few mins before talking.

"Let's call Ri now and she won't feel bad if you forget to call her on time," Liza said thoughtfully.

"Yes you are right" Sree agreed while pulling her outside of the lab to call Riya.

~Conference hall~

Ayesha and Chotu are waiting impatiently for Sree and Liza. They both are coming with a smile on their faces indicating the fight was over.

Ayesha raised her eyebrows at Liza, she shook her head happily like all okay. They came and sit in their respective place, and Sree dialed Riya number. They waited till she picked up the call.

"Hi Guys" Riya shrieked cheerfully.

"Hello Riya" They answered her happily. Since Sree turned on the speaker, it is easy for them to communicate with her at a time.

"How are guys? Enjoying at ETF without me!" She asked sadly.

"We are good and how is your wound now? Yeah, we are enjoying our day with criminals and paperwork" Sree replied while making faces about the paperwork.

Riya could imagine their weird faces, they would make when preparing reports.

"Wound is healing and enjoy your paperwork" Riya replied with a hint of naughtiness in her voice.

"This is not fair Ri, once you come back, we will make sure you do all the paperwork " Chotu challenged her.

"That we can see later Mr.Chotu" Riya countered back him.

After a pause, she asked hesitatingly, "Does everyone in the office? I mean Rathod Sir"

"Yeah, Rathod sir inside the cabin, you want us to give the phone to talk him?" this time Ayesha questioned her mischievously.

"No, No, I have just asked Ayesha Mam" Riya replied immediately before Ayesha would make her talk to ETF chief.

"So, everyone here only Ri! Are you expecting someone else to be present here?" Liza asked her innocently.

Riya is silent for a moment, cause she cannot tell them openly, that she wants to know Arjun presence, and wants to hear his voice.

Sree and Chotu understood her inner turmoil.

"Arjun Sir, he is on personal leave and will be back on Monday only " Sree cleared her doubts about Arjun's presence.

"Why? What happened to him? Is he okay? Does he unwell?" Riya bombarded him with questions.

"Ri, you should take a breath in between while talking, and he is alright, and it is just personal leave, you need not worry about him" Sree replied her to calm the poor soul.

"Are you sure Sree?" Riya asked him hopefully.

Though Sree is not sure about Arjun's safety, he replied to her uncertainty, "Yes, very sure and take care of you, we will talk tomorrow"

"Sure" Riya replied absent-mindedly thinking about Arjun sudden leave.

They disconnected the call, but Ayesha is thinking about Riya's worry about Arjun. The concern and anxiety in her voice are not a crush or sympathy, it has to be something more from Riya's story.

~Around 6 in the evening~

Rathod came from his cabin with deep thoughts and saw his team are busy with paperwork. He came and sat on his chair, and started to call Arjun's number to clear the confusion, it was created because of Arjun's odd behavior yesterday night.

But the number is switched off, and it was redirecting some voice messages, adding fuel to his doubts.

"Sree, track Rawte's number, and find the location!"Rathod ordered making everyone look at him confused.

Sree badly wants to ask the reason for tracking Arjun's number, but he knew it was like asking the chief to kill him with bare hands, so he nodded his head and left to bring the equipment to track the number.

Sree set up the instruments and started to track the number. It took 30 mins to track the number.

" Sir, I found the location!" Sree announced getting Rathod's undivided attention.

"Where it is?" Rathod questioned hurriedly.

"It's showing New York" Sree replied confusingly looking at Arjun mobile location.

And continued further, "It seems he switched off the mobile a few hours ago, and the last signal to the mobile from New York airport" Sree added more.

"Oh, he told the truth and I just suspected him unnecessarily " Rathod murmured himself

"Thanks, Sree, I just want to confirm his location, because his mobile was switched off for a prolonged time" Rathod replied honestly.

Other than Rathod others confused about the Arjun sudden visit to New York. Ayesha has an idea about Arjun's parents, but not fully, so she was skeptical about this news.

~After 1 hour ~

Rathod ordered everyone to leave for the day since the paperwork was complete, and perhaps tomorrow wouldn't be peaceful like today without any case. Sree, Chotu and Liza moved in Sree's car and Rathod and Ayesha in their own vehicle.

During the car ride to Sasha Home.

Rathod is driving the car with a confused expression and Ayesha is looking at him concerned.

"Sameer, What is bothering you?" Ayesha asked him while touching his left hand which is on the gear.

Sameer looked at her after feeling her touch on him.

"I'm worried about Arjun, he is barely reacting to us! I don't have any idea, why he went to New York!" he said with mixed of emotions.

"I don't understand Sameer, barely reacting means?" Ayesha questioned him while scrutinizing her eyes at him.

"Yesterday night he came and informed me about leaving for NewYork, and I couldn't come to terms with his sudden leave " Sameer replied to her while taking a right turn to their home.

"So, You knew already that he is in New York! Then why did you ask Sree to track his number? ," Ayesha asked him

Instantly she connected the dots and asked him, "You don't believe him, right? Do you still think Arjun sir, is not in New York "

Ayesha is waiting for his reply with bated breath.

"No, I don't believe him also now, he is hiding something from everyone! and Do you really think Arjun would be calm and serene?" Sameer questioned her.

When Ayesha is getting more confused, because of his questions. He looked at her before replying.

"If Arjun is calm, then he is gonna explode like a volcano. I knew him from the day Roshini introduced me, and he is not somebody who can stay calm amidst the confusions going on here." Sameer reasoned him.

"I'm afraid of his silence Ayesha, and I badly crave that he stays serene at least for some time. Every time I'm failing to understand him as a friend " Sameer said in a rage while punching the steering wheel.

"No, Sameer, You understood him better than anyone else here" Ayesha supported her husband to calm his rage.

"Not more than Riya," Sameer said as a matter of fact.

Ayesha looked at him surprisingly about his observing abilities to see what is happening around Riya and Arjun.

"I knew everything Ayesha, but her care is not going to melt down the coldest heart and the agony in his soul" Sameer replied sadly thinking about Riya.

"No Sameer, She is capable of bringing him on track, and she will be the one who is going to meltdown his cold heart and give solace to him" Ayesha replied him confidently.

This time Sameer looked at her confusingly.

"Riya loves Arjun more than herself, and it is not a care or sympathy as you guys think of it," Ayesha explained to him.

Within 20 mins they both got down at the Rathod mansion. Sameer is trying the digest the fact of Riya's love for Arjun.

"Are you sure? , Riya loves Arjun? ," Sameer asked once again to get clarity.

"More than anything!" Ayesha replied confidently.

Sameer's face broke into a satisfied smile on his face.

"OMG, I'm so happy for Arjun, Finally, he will be happy in his life after a painful past " Sameer exclaimed happily.

"Don't you feel bad that he is moving in his life forgetting Roshini? Ayesha questioned him.

" Why would I? He deserves to be happy in his life and about forgetting Roshini I don't feel bad, cause my sister was past life to him, and I really wish Riya will be his beautiful future" Sameer replied with a small smile playing on his lips.

"I'm proud of Sameer, I thought you would never agree on Riya's presence in Arjun sir life" Ayesha exclaimed happily.

"But it will put up with lots of patience to calm down his raging heart, and Riya has to wait patiently to calm him down," Sameer said worriedly.

"Riya would do that" Ayesha whispered

Sameer nodded his head agreeing with her, and both went inside their home.

At Dehradun next day

After 1 day of car drive, Arjun reached Raj's bureau exhausted in the early morning of the next day, but with the determination of finding the killer. Once everyone saw their head, they stood up and saluted him. Arjun nodded his head and made his way to the cabin in which Raj is waiting.

Raj is sighing in relief seeing his senior, and at the same time bothered looking at his tiring face.

"AR, Thank God, You arrived and it's kinda difficult to hide the blast in the eyes of reporters," Raj said frustratingly.

"Yes, I knew and have you guys find clues in the crime spot" Arjun questioned while rubbing his forehead to reduce the throbbing head pain due to long travel and a sleepless night.

"You should have taken a flight to come here instead of the car journey, and you look so tired," Raj said concerned while looking at his tiring eyes.

"Are you joking? If I took the air route it will invite the unnecessary crowd, and this will alert him too, that I'm back to my original job instead of ETF." Arjun replied while thinking about the consequences.

"Do you really think he keeps watching on your moves?" Raj questioned him carefully.

"Of course Raj, The damage I and Veer Sir, did in his personal and professional life at least this much monitoring I deserved, and if my doubts are confirmed, he would know that I joined Mumbai ETF." Arjun smiled wickedly thinking about the damage they did to the assassin.

"And the question about clues, we couldn't find any tangible evidence !" Raj retorted.

"Get ready within 1 hour we are reaching the spot again, I want to see the place, and have you guys did the rites to Officer Vinod?"Arjun questioned him.

" Nope, not yet, we are waiting for you to reach and even the minister told the same" Raj replied sincerely.

"Are you freaking kidding me? You know that I can't come over there when the media, officials, and crowds are all over the place! It is too dangerous for everyone, and I really don't want to put you guys in trouble." Arjun exclaimed and paused for a min.

"Start the ceremonies for officer Vinod, and inform the home minister about it, till then I will go freshen up to visit the crime spot. After the crowd is cleared from Vinod home, I will go and see officer Vinod family," Arjun said determinedly.

Raj nodded his head and called the Home minister PA to inform the change in plan.

At the crime spot

~ After 2 hours~

Arjun and Raj went to the crime spot after Arjun freshen up in Raj home. They could see that area is covered with police and barricades are covered around the car. Arjun is moving towards the almost burnt car with a gloved hand.

Arjun looks at the car, it was in a terrible condition, and he could imagine of Officer Vinod pain when the blast took place. Raj understands the turmoil of his senior.

"We couldn't find body parts except for some bones, and we initially suspected by this car number and later confirmed this was Officer Vinod by going through the DNA test," Raj replied to his unasked question.

"The explosion looks terrible and have you guys find from where the blast was monitored or any unknown person roaming around Vinod car yesterday or he had been followed by any man" Arjun queried him while looking at Raj in hopeful eyes.

Raj nodded his head as No, Arjun started to walk from that place till the Vinod car was parked yesterday. He looks around for clues suddenly his eyes caught some explosion sticks, which was half covered in the ground due the car was run over on it. It seems the mysterious man would have left in this place while dumping the sticks inside the car since the place might have dark due to the winter season.

Arjun motioned Raj to come over here and showed him the sticks which are buried in the ground, using the wood which is laying on the floor started to dig the sticks without any damage.

He started to examine the stick in a gloved hand and said, "These sticks are not available in our market, mostly the assassin from outside India to implement the bomb blast. Send these sticks to our chemical department to find out the chemical mixture of the sticks, and where it was made? And in India how they imported?"

"Yes, I will do AR, but he can you confirm this is not manufactured in India?" Raj asked him doubtfully.

Arjun took one of the sticks, removed the aluminium wrap which was covered in the sticks, and emptied the chemical out of the stick to his hand.

While showing his hand and explain, "These chemicals are not available in India, and I have a modest idea about the chemicals used in India "

"But even if we found out the man who bought this from outside, we won't get his original id, so we have to discover some other clues," Arjun explained to him.

They started to walk for some more distance, hoping to get any clue. Around 10 mins walk, they both noticed buff was lying in the isolated corner nearby tree. Arjun took hold of the buff and examined it.

"What is the approx distance the remote was regulated? What is the distance between these two places?" Arjun questioned him.

"The distance in which the remote was operated approx 40 to 50 feet and the distance between these places is around 50 to 70 feet approx" Raj pointed out the data.

Both of them look at each other meaningfully and Raj interrupted Arjun.

"It must be the killer used to buff because after the explosion, he must be suffocated to breathe due to the dust and smoke after the explosion"Raj replied determinedly.

" Yes, it may be true, and find out in which hospital this kind of buffs is prescribed to the patients and send this to the forensic department to get a fingerprint on it" Arjun agreed with him.

And paused for a moment before continuing, "There is a possibility to get the original id of that killer because in hospital 89% of patients would have given the true identity".

Raj nodded his head and both of them started to go from that place with all the evidence.

At Raj's home

~After 3 hours ~

Arjun is standing outside on the terrace looking at the mountains of the Dehradun on a winter night. It was icy cold outside so Arjun is wearing a brown leather jacket to prevent him from the chilly weather.

The atmosphere is so calm and the darkness added to the beauty of the cliffs. The atmosphere is bringing him the memories of his life in which he was actually happy.

" There are so many ways to make the body stronger, only loneliness makes your soul stronger, Arjun "

Veer words keep ringing in his ears like it was yesterday he told this line to him. When Arjun was afraid of being in loneliness, but he never knew this would make his life stronger.

He didn't know what life stored for him, the only mission in his life taking too much time he has expected and making him frustrated every moment.

Arjun closed his eyes to reduce the burning fire in his heart and tightly hold the wooden railing of the terrace to calm his irrational mind. Raj came with a cup of tea and saw Arjun looking ahead of the mountains. He gently placed his hand on his shoulder to wake him from the daydream. Arjun turned his head when he felt some presence behind him.

Raj motioned him to take the tea and asked, "Are you comfortable here AR?"

"Yeah, I'm, but you shouldn't worry about my stay, I would have booked a hotel here," Arjun said while sipping his hot tea.

"Your stay in the hotel would invite unnecessary doubts to his people who are behind on you and this may alert them that you back to force, and my parents are out of town so stop stressing about my safety" Raj replied in affirmatively.

Arjun just hummed at him.

"Do you think he was behind in this explosion of Officer Vinod car?" Raj questioned doubtfully.

"I don't think, but I'm damn sure he was behind on this, otherwise when we almost find his hideouts then explosion took place! Is this coincidence or planned attack?" Arjun questioned him rather than answering him.

"It is a calculated attack to refrain us to reach him!" Raj contradicted him.

"His territory is secretive and he makes sure to erase his data from all the websites," Arjun said angrily.

"But how? He must be superb intelligent or he owns the intelligent people" Raj answered him shockingly

"He is both!" Arjun said calmly looking at Raj's surprised face.

In Camden tower Pallavi and Aditya home

Riya's bedroom

Riya is laying down on the bed thinking about the conversion she had with Sree just an hour ago. Arjun flew to New York, but the reason unknown to everyone except Rathod.

She came out of her thoughts when her mobile started to ring. The name of the caller brought a smile on her face.

"Hey, Dhivya, How are you ?"Riya screamed happily.

" We have talked in the morning and you are the one who is injured!" Dhivya said while rolling her eyes.

"The wound is healing, I knew we were talking in the morning and you called me again so any problem?" Riya questioned her for the call.

"Nothing happened to me, morning you were worried about your hero's sudden leave in an ETF, so thought of asking you now" Dhivya replied with a hint of sarcasm

"Arjun off to New York " Riya replied her sadly.

"My lady, you started to stalk him like school and college days? You didn't tell me like always!" Dhivya screamed at her.

"Are you going insane? Sree told me just an hour ago and I never stalked him!" Riya replied her rather rudely

"As if I believe you, If he goes to New York let him go! What is your problem with it?" Dhivya tried to explain to her.

"Afraid of his safety and I couldn't believe the fact that he took leave in the ETF. It is opposite of his personality " Riya reasoned her.

"You should think out of this man girl, 'Too much anything is the beginning of a mess'," Dhivya murmured while thinking about the way Riya making her life.

"I tried and I'm trying Dhivya, but I couldn't do that, the emotion I feel for him is increasing day by day " Riya murmured with tears tickling down on her cheeks.

"Do you think? He will love you back the same way or at least half the way you do?" Dhivya questioned her.

"That's the only thing haunting my mind, he would never love me back the same way I do, heck he doesn't even look at me with that emotion" Riya mumbled when trying to wipe away her tears.

"I thought you would get his love at least his care when you told me that he joined ETF, but now I'm frightened that he is never going to reciprocate your feelings" Dhivya replied her with a broken voice thinking about Riya.

"When he was away from me these years, I was happy that he is living his life peacefully, "

She gulped down her emotions before continuing

"But after I met him at the ETF, my feelings for him are raising 100 folds, and his indifference behaviour and I don't care attitude is making me break my already shattered heart." She cried out, letting her emotions control her.

"Shh, Riya, please don't cry! For me!" Dhivya pleaded her with tears in her eyes.

"I was happy when I'm away from him, now I'm not happy, though we both are so close, that the warmth of his breath could be felt by me, and he just inches away from reaching out, yet we are so far away. He is deliberately forging distance between us " Riya voiced out her inner turmoil.

"Do you really believed that you would meet again after that night? No right? But you met him anyway again, Have you ever thought of meeting him at ETF? Nope, right? You guys once again met with different circumstances, " Dhivya pointed out everything from the beginning about their meeting

Riya is silently listening to Dhivya without uttering a single word.

"You guys meant to together, if not you would have never met him that night at isolated lane bleeding for life, and after that" Dhivya confidently said.

"How could you so sure about it?" Riya asked doubtfully.

" 'My instinct' I feel this time Arjun is going to fall for you irrevocably without any control over it," Dhivya said confidently.

"I thought of forgetting him is easy, and I almost believed that he was a memory until I met him again at ETF, I afraid of forcing him to reciprocate my feelings" Riya replied breathlessly thinking about her own reactions.

"For your kind information, You never stopped loving him! Arjun is a broken man now, he needs assurance that he is not alone on that planet and you need to assure him that every step he takes to move forward in his life, you will be with him! Give him some time and the hero will come around!" Dhivya explained to her about Arjun's mental state.

"I will be with him always!" Riya responded immediately.
