Manik Grover was unperturbed. Financial setbacks were no big deal for him, he was hurting though on behalf of his daughter. She was doingwell for herself, mostly doing NOIDA and Gurgaon apartment deals for the IT industry 20 something and 30 something expats.
All lukewarm safe deals, almost near zero risk in each
Her poise and sophistication helped her build a good reputation among them
He kept her insulated from the dirty inner workings of theproperty dealing world, helping her out secretly, until recently
She knew it all along, but threw a giant fit and made him promise he would back off and let her do it all by herself
He had reluctantly agreed after much coaxing from Tara, and so Shubhra had started playing in the messier big league of kothis and shady under the table negotiations.
It didn’t fit well with the business model of having a plushoffice in NOIDA, and herself being educated and well groomed, but that’s where the big money was and Shubhra was ambitious.
She didn’t care for expensive jewelry or fancy vacations or clothes or purses. This was like a penance? Or some mysterious mission she wason.
Unwilling to be set up, and unwilling to go out on dates on her own, her relationship status was a cold single. In fact she hadn’t had a boyfriend beyond her high school crushes.
Her single minded focus and her willingness to learn the tricks of the trade made her a great ally. The boys were younger and were in college overseas, one in Florida and one in Australia, Sydney….
Tara worried for Shubhra’s safety as well, but Manik had enough trained goons in the business that would keep an eye on Shubhra when she was making cash transactions, he started to relax a little bit
Two busted deals in a row within a space of a month was unsettling indeed
He made as many phone calls as he could after the first deal fell through, he was baffled by the complete lack of information.
The Pitampura dealer indicated he knew of someone in Vikaspuri that knew the Janakpuri dealer was looking for a kothi for a cousin…Mrs Govil
But no one could say for sure how and where and when the whole Pyare Lal deal had been struck
This new catastrophe made him nervous
Shubhra didn’t cry, she withdrew into her shell, not coming down for dinner, or for drinks in the evening
Manik spent the time talking to his people in the trade
None of them had any sensible reason for why Shubhra would lose her security deposit
Manik would cover that for her….
But to even be in this situation, when she was hours away from closing, was mind boggling.
He called Anand Mahajan after getting the number from Abhay, the second he realized he was Shubhra’s Dad he had hung up
The next morning at breakfast, he tried to talk about everything other than realty
“its OK Dad, u can say it… I am not stupid, I wont kill myself or burn the house” she chuckled weakly
“Of course not”
“This just seems SO PLANNED” she said her tone was gruff…
Manik sat up and looked at her with piercing eyes
“I mean who though?” she continued
“I don’t know… we are like politicians, hazaar dushman hainbeta” he was candid
