"I thought you were going out with Yash" Shyam said sardonically as soon as she entered.
"Bro, please, not now" she said. She was tired physically and more emotionally.
"When is the right time, Khushi? Just because I am not saying much doesn't mean I approve of everything you do. I am your brother, I have your best interests in mind and I have the right to question you when I think what you're doing isn't right for you" he said his anger besting him.
Anjali and Buaji came running out when they heard Shyam's bellowing.
"What happened? Why are you screaming at her?" Anjali asked coming to stand beside Khushi, her hand going up to hold her shoulders.
"Ask her why she went out with Yash and came back with Arnav?" Shyam bit out the words in between clenched teeth.
Buaji stood there clueless as to why Shyam was reacting so hard to Arnav dropping her home. Arnav was family. She anyway didn't like it when Khushi went out with Yash.
Anjali looked up at Khushi's face. She was trying hard to bite back the tears that were forming. Again. She was sure she had been crying before. Her brother was such a jerk.
But before she could say anything Khushi bolted from there running to her room only to be stopped by Buaji's voice, "You both are getting late. If you don't start no, you're going to miss your flight"
"Flight?" Khushi asked turning towards the threesome.
"Wo your brother surprised your bhabhi with the honeymoon tickets today evening" buaji said smiling a little.
Khushi turned to look at her brother and bhabhi who didn't look the least bit excited about leaving now. She knew how happy Anjali would've been when Shyam would've surprised her with the honeymoon. Khushi was very happy for them. She had no right to spoil it for her. She felt guilty. She walked down to them and said Yash's car had broken down and as it was getting late Arnav gave her a lift because he happened to be in the party too. Shyam didn't look convinced but after a fair amount of persuading, she made him smile after promising to not do anything stupid while he was away. She helped them with their luggage to the taxi that was waiting outside and bid them goodbye.
When they came back inside, Buaji was all ready to bombard her with questions of her own to which Khushi just replied that Shyam didn't like Arnav much and so he doesn't like it when he sees them together. And before she could ask her another question, Khushi went to her room saying she wanted to change and rest.
After she locked the door to her room, she took her phone out of her purse and was shocked to see the number of missed calls. 67 missed calls out of which 20 were from Yash and all others from Arnav and he was the one who found her almost as soon as she had disappeared. His calls outnumbered Yash's even in that small amount of time. She couldn't help but smile. It was good to see how much he cared for her. In his own twisted ways.
She then called Yash to inform him that she was safely home now. As soon as Yash saw her number flashing, he picked up and gave her an earful on how stupid she was and how worried he'd been. After apologizing for acting insensitively she hung up and changed.
As he lay on his bed that night Arnav couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned and finally sat up giving up on trying. He was too preoccupied to be able to sleep. What was he going to do with her? He really had to decide what he wanted. He had been serious and honest when he'd said he couldn't do commitments. But he had reacted rather harshly, too harshly on the idea of her accepting marriage to someone else. He knew he'd have done anything to stop the wedding. He couldn't let it happen. Surprisingly, he had even offered to marry her himself if that were the only way possible. But then she had refused. Not that he minded but he still didn't know why. Isn't that what she'd wanted? He exhaled a long breath. He can't let her go, on that he was sure. But he wasn't sure he'd be able to give her the life she wants. And he certainly can't go on living this way. They couldn't go on like this forever. And the only way to go about it was talk to her. To have her as his own.
"I am going to the market and will be back soon," Buaji told Khushi as she took out her big shoppers and went out the door.
Khushi nodded slightly. If Arnav was confused, Khushi was no less. She felt like her head would burst if she took any more stress. She absently roamed around the living room, arranging and re arranging things that were already in place. A noise behind her made her jerk and she asked, "Buaji, did you forget something?" without even turning to look back. When there was no sound she whirled around to ask her again and there he was. The bane of her existence, standing in the doorway, his look brooding as he watched her closely. Without even acknowledging his presence, she turned away and towards the kitchen watching her peripheral vision for any movements from him. He was still standing there.
"Why did you say you'd not marry me?" he asked suddenly.
Khushi stopped in her tracks. He was asking her this now? Why?
"I thought you didn't do commitments and were very happy about my decision. Why are you asking me this?"
"I told you sarcasm doesn't suit you. Just tell me, why?"
"Because I didn't want to," she said still not turning to look at him.
"Oh, really? I thought you loved me and wanted to marry me!" he said his tone mocking.
She felt like banging the vessel she was holding on his head. He was riling her up purposely. And she didn't care if she gave him the satisfaction of having succeeded. She just had to let it out of her system. She was pathetic enough to be not able to hold her stance for even 5 minutes and he already knew she was pathetic so it wouldn't hurt anyway.
"Yes, I love you and it was the biggest mistake of my life that I fell in love with an insensitive jerk like you and was foolish enough to admit it to you and want you to marry me." She yelled in a single breath and inhaled deeply before continuing, "And I didn't marry you because I knew you didn't love me. Because I knew you didn't want to marry me and were saying so only because you thought I was going to marry Yash." She finished with her index finger pointing at him emphasizing the words 'you' and 'thought'.
"Because I thought? Means you were not?" he asked his brows furrowing, forgetting that she just called him names.
"Yes. Because you thought" she said again emphasizing on the two words and continued answering his next question, "No. I was not."
She walked towards the door as he asked, "Why did you let me believe otherwise, then?"
He was still standing by the door and when she tried to walk past him, he held her hand and pulled her back to him, "Why?" he asked his voice dangerously serious.
She opened her mouth to ask him to leave her when she saw him closing he door and locking it.
"What are you doing? Open the door"
He came away from the door and started walking towards her. She started backing up on reflex and stopped when the back of her legs hit the dining table.
He walked to her and placed his hands on either side of her on the table and leaned in as he whispered, "Why didn't you tell me you were not going to marry him? Even when I…." He stopped mid-sentence remembering how he'd manhandled her that day. He had shown her how abusive a kiss can be when she had done nothing to deserve it.
She knew what he was thinking about and was looking at him taking deep breaths to control her fluttering heartbeats and confusing rush of all emotions at once. She closed her eyes when he moved closer to place the softest of kiss at the corner of her lips. And she felt the familiar sensation of a thousand butterflies flying around in her stomach.
"Khushi" he whispered softly as his lips traced hers, gentle and sweet demanding nothing. "Khushi, I'm…" he whispered as he pecked her lips again. "Khushi, I'm… sorry" he said and kissed her again only to draw back very soon to her disappointment. Her lips had parted in surprise when she had heard him say sorry. She didn't think he had said sorry to anyone before. Arnav knew he had surprised her. She drew him to her in a way he couldn't resist. He watched her as she darted her tongue out to moisten her lips making his gut clench and her cheeks had reddened in a way making him want to kiss her sense out of her. But he knew he wouldn't do any of that talking he wanted to if he kissed her again. But unable to resist, he bent down and placed another quick kiss surprising her again. He then slid his hands down the length of her arms to hold her hands firmly and lead her to seat her on a chair. He pulled another chair and seated himself opposite to her and said, "I think we're going to have to stop playing hide and seek with each other."
