Border 2 has opened to an overwhelming response, with audiences praising its scale, emotion and patriotic spirit. The film has sparked strong word of mouth across the country, especially for its performances, as it carries forward the legacy of the iconic 1997 classic Border. Featuring a powerful ensemble that includes Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty, the film has quickly become one of the most talked about releases of the year. Amid all the buzz and celebration surrounding the film, one presence that quietly stood out during its premiere was that of Suniel Shetty.
Suniel Shetty, who played the unforgettable role of Assistant Commandant Bhairon Singh Rathore in the original Border, attended the premiere of Border 2 last week to support his son Ahan Shetty, who plays a key role in the sequel. However, instead of taking a seat inside the theatre, Suniel made a conscious decision to stay outside the screening hall. While his wife Mana Shetty, daughter Athiya Shetty and son in law KL Rahul watched the film alongside Ahan, Suniel chose a different way to be present for the moment.
Speaking to Mid day about the evening, the actor shared that he spent the entire duration of the screening outside the theatre. Rather than watching the film, he chose to meet people, interact with fans and well wishers and absorb the positive energy surrounding the film. Recalling the experience, Suniel said, “I sat outside the theatre for three and a half hours, meeting people and soaking in all the compliments.” For many, his decision raised curiosity, especially given his deep emotional association with the Border franchise.
Suniel later revealed that staying away from the screening was a personal and emotional choice rooted in faith and belief. The actor shared that he had made a mannat for his son’s success even before the film’s release. Explaining his decision, he said, “I had said from day one that I wouldn’t watch 'Border 2' until it crossed a worldwide collection of Rs 500 crore. I had kept a mannat for Ahan. So far, I haven’t watched a single frame. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not about arrogance.”
The actor’s words reflected a father’s faith rather than professional detachment. Despite not having seen the film himself, Suniel expressed complete confidence in both the project and his son’s performance. He shared that the response from those who had already watched the film had been reassuring and heartwarming. Speaking about the feedback he had received, Suniel said, “I am hoping it will cross Rs 500 crore. Mana loved 'Border 2'. Everybody who has watched the film has appreciated Ahan's work. I am happy that after 'Dhurandhar', another Hindi movie has worked brilliantly.”

For Suniel, Border has always been more than just a film. It marked a defining chapter in his career and remains one of the most celebrated war films in Indian cinema. Watching the story continue with his son now being part of that legacy carries immense emotional weight. His decision to stay away from the screen until his mannat is fulfilled adds another layer of sentiment to the journey of Border 2.
Industry insiders and fans alike have appreciated Suniel’s quiet gesture, calling it a rare example of a star choosing belief and humility over spotlight. Even while attending the premiere, he ensured that the focus remained on Ahan and the film, rather than on his own association with the original. By standing outside and greeting people instead of sitting inside the theatre, Suniel symbolically stepped aside to let the next generation take center stage.
As Border 2 continues its strong run and garners praise from audiences across the country, Suniel Shetty waits patiently for the day he can finally watch the film. Until then, his faith in his son and the film remains unshaken. His words and actions together paint the picture of a proud father who believes that sometimes, love, patience and faith speak louder than applause inside a cinema hall.
