Bollywood movies on mental illness

Besides, physical well being, the mental health of a person is paramount to a content and happy life. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and it affects how we think, feel, and act. While mental illness continues to be a myth and a stigma in the societal norms, it is extremely difficult for an individual suffering from a mental disorder to identify, and moreover, accept the problem. However, with more and more awareness being created around the subject and prominent personalities stepping forward to raise the topic publicly has helped to place the ‘mental health’ phenomena in the limelight, and encourage people to undergo therapy and consultation.

Like the other forms of media, Films have progressed and evolved in talking about issues that matter to the audience. Today, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, we bring to you 8 Bollywood movies that shed light on Mental Disorders.

1)Judgementall Hai Kya

The 2019 black comedy film, Judgementall Hai Kya, produced by Ekta Kapoor and directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, featured Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles. The film is a twisted-trippy tale, reckoned with impressive performances by the cast. Bobby, Kangana’s character in the film suffers from acute psychosis, backed with unresolved childhood trauma and her struggle to sustain reality. Acute psychosis is a serious mental disorder characterized by a loss of contact with reality, as portrayed by in the film.

2) Margarita with a Straw (2014)

Directed by Shonali Bose, the film stars Kalki Koechlin as an Indian teenager with cerebral palsy who relocates to America for her undergraduate education and comes of age following her complex relationship with a blind girl, played by Sayani Gupta. Cerebral palsy is a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture. The film manages to move the audience deeply with its top-notch performances and unique perspective into the lives of the differently-abled.

3)Dear Zindagi (2016)

The Gauri Shinde directorial, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, is a successful take on storytelling, evolving from mere discussing and conferring to the mental struggle to confronting and accepting it by the end of the movie. The film glorifies therapy and psychiatrist’s sessions and simply normalizing the idea of mental illness. With some happy go music, the film will take you through a mix of emotions, however leaving you teary-eyed and smiling, by the end of it.

4)Tamasha (2015)

This absolute piece of art by Imtiaz Ali touched millions of hearts with its soul-stirring sequences and the exemplification of the complex mental situation of the lead characters in the film. Ranbir Kapoor as Ved and Deepika Padukone as Tara delivered one of the finest performances of their career in this journey of learning and unlearning their real identities. 

Ranbir as Ved struggles to balance his real identity with the other one, which the society expects him to be. He undergoes a constant conflict of what he is and what he should be, enduring through Borderline personality disorder. Also, the lyrics by Irshad Kamil and  A. R. Rahman’s soulful composition will leave you with goosebumps.

5)Barfi (2012)

Written and directed by Anurag Basu, Barfi is a heartwarming tale of a trio- Murphy Barfi Johnson, a deaf-mute Nepali boy from Darjeeling, and his relationships with two women, Shruti and an autistic Jhilmil. Autism is a disorder of neural development and is characterized by impaired social interaction, communication, and restricted repetitive behavior, and Priyanka Chopra’s performance is commendable in the film. Besides, Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz accord to making the film a perfect emotional romantic drama.

6)Karthik Calling Karthik (2010)

An unconventional physiological thriller drama, starring Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar, who suffers from inverted schizophrenia in the film. It is a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to understand reality. Directed by Vijay Lalwani, the film is quirky twisted tale revolving around a mysterious phone call.

7)My Name Is Khan (2010)

Karan Johar’s 2010 film, My Name Is Khan features Shah Rukh Khan as Rizwan, a man with Asperger's syndrome. Asperger's is a developmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. SRK was lauded for his accurate representation in the film, and Kajol co staring him unravel the unfortunate events after the twin tower attacks.

8)Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Produced and directed by Aamir Khan, the film explores the life and imagination of Ishaan, an 8-year-old dyslexic child. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. The film features a heart touching struggle story of the 8-year-old Ishaan, played by Darsheel Safary, and the film will make you shed a few tears every time you watch it. The background score by  Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy adds the perfect sentiment to the emotional drama.
