Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan are one of Bollywood's most powerful couples. On the occasion of Valentine's Day, we happened to get our hands on an old interview where Abhishek defended Aishwarya's appearance at Cannes and heaped compliments on his lovely wife.
In 2003, Aishwarya Rai became the first Indian woman to serve on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. She wore a vivid green outfit with a pink embroidered skirt to the event.
The Bunty Aur Babli actor said in an interview that it was the first year that Aishwarya was invited as a jury member. And there was this huge uproar in the media about how she was dressed. Although they were just friends and co-stars then, it really upset Abhishek.
Defending all the criticism she received for her look, he also added that over the years, you see it happen every year and now, as a husband, it upsets him. He had called the criticism over the outfit petty and ridiculous.
Aishwarya said she couldn't comprehend what all the fuss was about at first when she was asked about it. She never expected such a major media reaction to what she was wearing, according to her. She felt that way because she was truly there as a jury member, which had a much bigger and more vital purpose, was much more exciting, and had a much greater impact.
On the work front, Aishwarya will next be seen in ‘Ponniyan Selvan’, directed by Mani Ratnam.
