Vir Das Appreciates Delhi High Court for its support by Declining a stay on airing of Hasmukh...

Vir Das’ Netflix show Hasmukh has received help from Delhi High Court after a stay was sought on the show. High Court on Tuesday declined to grant interim stay on the airing of the show dismissing a plea that had claimed the fictional series maligned the reputation of advocates.

A report from the Firstpost stated that Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva dismissed the application moved by lawyer Ashutosh Dubey.

Now, Das has taken to his social media handle and expressed his gratitude to stand by a creative artist who is “given the liberty to project the picture of the society in a manner he perceives.”

In a statement issued Das wrote, “Yesterday, in the Delhi High Court, in the middle of the pandemic, there was a hearing. A hearing about my show where a fictitious comedian does jokes about a fictitious lawyer. Close to 10 legal notices, a suit for 'defaming the reputation of lawyers', political pages organizing to down-vote it on IMDb.”

“Fair game. As artists we are taught to accept feedback humbly, and I do so knowing that my work always has, and will polarise people. But since these actions go a little beyond feedback, I hope I've earned the right to respectfully respond,” added Das. 

He further explained how he has spent a decade trying to make this country laugh and seen enough happy people know that comedy, of all genres, does better than harm. He even pointed out how, “Offence is taken, not given.”

Thanking the High Court for their support the 40-year-old signed off writing, “The very essence of democracy is that a creative artist is given the liberty to project the picture of the society in a manner he perceives. One of the prime forms of exposing the ills of the society is by portraying a satirical picture of the same. Stand-up comedians perform that very purpose. In their portrayal they use satire and exaggerate the ills to an extent that it becomes a ridicule. In the humorous portrayal of the ills of the society the stand-up comedians use satire. - Delhi High Court.”
