The Venice film festival does not plan on extending its dates for 2020 and the film festival will continue to be held at the beginning of September as scheduled. A Variety report stated that Luca Zaia, the governor of Veneto has confirmed that the festival, which was due to take place September 2-12, will be held as planned.

The decision comes after the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country slows.

Organized by the Biennale di Venezia company, Venice is the world’s longest-running film festival. In January it announced that Cate Blanchett would preside over its 77th edition.

The film industry officials took necessary actions to curb the spread of COVID-19 and the report also states that the festival will probably be attended by fewer productions, said Zaia, who is also a board member of the Biennale di Venezia.

Meanwhile, several film festivals along with award functions have been forced to postpone due to the coronavirus scare. The Cannes Film Festival, the world’s largest, was forced to postpone its latest edition in May due to the virus epidemic.

The festival has not yet commented on plans for September. Venice did the due diligence early May asking for concerns and suggestions regarding the upcoming movie gala.

The letter, which was signed by Venice's artistic director Alberto Barbera, was meant to figure out how many filmmakers, actors and producers are willing to attend the fest.

Italy plans to lift all travel curbs from June 3 and travelers from European Union countries will be able to enter without going into quarantine.
