Bollywood's sequel trend almost seems perennial and prosperous, especially when competing with the fresher concepts. Joining the bandwagon is Alumbra Entertainment, Wave Cinemas and Amitabh Bachchan Corporation's third instalment of the Sarkar (2005) series, aptly titled Sarkar 3. While director Ram Gopal Varma, and protagonists, Amitabh Bachchan and Supriya Pathak, reprise their roles from the original, we see an entirely different, but stellar supporting cast comprising of Jackie Shroff, Manoj Bajpayee, Amit Sadh, Ronit Roy and Yami Gautam.

While it is important to mention that we were agreeably excited for the threequel, we are mildly disappointed. Customarily, the story revolves around the anti-hero, Subhash Nagre, better known as Sarkar, whose intentions are crueler this time around but morals still stand strong. Followed by a chain of flashbacks, a mob of new faces graces the land of Sarkar, without any clear purpose. There is the usual plotting, killing, and revenge, but nothing that astounds you. These unpolished characters mouth a few euphonious dialogues, but don't really give away their intents, melting down the preconceived crux of the story.

The direction has a typical 'Varma' vibe, decent but not appealing. The screenplay, also by Varma and editing, by Anwar Ali, is weak because we couldn't make heads or tails of the trailer. By far, only P. Jaya Kumar's script, and Ravi Shankar's music are what stay with you after the two-minute run-time.

The multipotent artist that Varma is, he has managed to accommodate some of the best acting talents in the country. Sadly, the trailer does not do much justice to their skills. The master of the craft, Bachchan, needs no validation. On the other hand, Shroff's portrayal of a suave antagonist is a reiteration of his roles in Boom (2003), Apna Sapna Money Money (2006) and Housefull 3 (2016). Post Kaabil (2017), Gautam was expected to up her game but she seems a little out of place. Bajpayee and Roy manage to impress and of course, Sadh, who is a total surprise!

Baked on an amateurish plot and poor technicalities, Sarkar 3 is fortunate to be iced with some great performances. Though Varma has had his share of ups and downs, this turns out to be a new low, considering the acclaim the series has always received. We, at BollyCurry, rate the trailer a 2 out of 5, as we certainly cannot be oblivious to the success of the prequels. While the movie hits the screens on 7th April, 2017, we urge you to tune into YouTube or your favourite video streaming website to give this trailer a watch. Be sure to comment below and let us know your views!

The most striking thing about this trailer is its announcement that Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in an angrier, meaner avatar. In fact, he says that he hasn't changed over the years.
But all said and done, Sarkar 3 is probably Varma's last shot to reclaim his space in Bollywood as the most sought after noir filmmaker.
