The White Tiger is now streaming on Netflix and features Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao, and Adarsh Gourav in the leading roles. Written and directed by Ramin Bahrani, The White Tiger is based on a book by Aravind Adiga with the same name.
It holds true that one cannot put everything from the book into a movie. However, things change when you watch a movie, and while not everyone might have read the book, the movie has its edge. Narrating the story is none other than Balram Halwai i.e. Adarsh Gourav himself.
We are constantly shifting between the present, the past, and everything else in between. Interestingly, the narration happens in the form of an email that our narrator is writing to the Chinese Premiere before his visit. Something that is very interesting about the film is the reference to coming out of the rooster coop, beautifully so. While there are many references to animals, a lot about the movie's success is about its ability to keep us engrossed. And for that, the narration helps a lot.
With two actors like Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka, one might assume that it is about them. But interestingly, it is more about Adarsh's Balram than about Ashok and Pinky, respectively. While Balram has been forced widely into believing that he is supposed to serve as a servant, he sure has other plans.
A lot about this movie seems things that we have spoken about and we have seen. Right from the religious issues to that about the cast, the dirt, and the western culture's influence at large. However, we must give it to Adarsh for both his narration and acting as well. With Priyanka and Rajkummar, their accents seem to be a major putt off.
Among other characters like Mahesh Manjrekar or Vijay Maurya, we sure enjoy their screen presence. They are what is meant to be the true blue zamindar Hindus, and it shows in every big and small thing they do.
All in all, the movie is one to watch out for, and while we might feel a little disconnect with others, Adarsh Gourav keeps you hooked and how. If I was being honest, I know that things are going to eventually work out, and you as a viewer know it too, probably also know its fashion. However, it is his narration, the cinematography, and the complete package that gives us a feeling of contentment at the end of the movie.
