Thappad Review: A wholesome drama about a Slap that was definitely not a Ghar ki Baat!

Thappad narrates the story of a housewife - Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) who has just been surviving through a relationship with her husband - Vikram (Pavail Gulati) and a house that relies on her daily activities. It talks about the story of a housemaker who realizes her ill-treatment after a single slap that changes her whole perspective towards herself, her husband, as well as the society and how its outlook towards women in general.

At the onset, Thappad is not just about  Amrita - Taapsee Pannu, and it essentially talks about the problems women face and how they are often treated in general. The film has been curated in such a manner that caters to all the classes in the context of ‘Ambiguity’ which makes the film more subjective. Everyone might not be the victim of the same issue and similarly, the solutions may also differ.

The extremely slow-paced film visualizes director Anubhav Sinha’s idea of lawed relationships that can be relevant for each and every class of the society. The amalgamation of four narratives - Sunita (Maid), Nethra (Lawyer), Amrita (Housewife), Naila (Girlfriend/Fiance) offers a close overview of their life and personal struggles.

The film justifies its duration (2h:29mins) for the obscure and verbose characters that created several areas of possibilities due to their diverse and unparalleled individualities, especially Vikram. Despite the fact that Sinha focused more on detailing the characters; he never fails to delight you as the grey areas are likely to overshadow the aptness of the exposition. The use of cinematic realism has bolstered emotionally bonded characters which are conceivably relateable.

The writers Anubhav Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo’s fortuitous attempt to add realism made the film far more complex as Vikram unconsciously hints at all answers Amrita sought. Similarly, even the commendable transition of each and every character has added another feather to Sinha’s cap.

The filtered layers of drama offer the exact proportion of entertainment value which fairly succumbs to the elegance of narration. Frankly, the film satisfies your conscience with the ending as Sinha isn't seen to be biased with his perspective - neither male or female; and it definitely does not feel incomplete. Apart from that, the ending also overwhelms you with sudden rush emotions.

The film has adamantly focused upon 'Apology' as 'Hope'... A hope that keeps your relationship alive. Similarly, there are a plethora of hidden cues that constantly talk about director/writer Anubhav Sinha's excellence of direction. To be precise -  the orange popsicle.

After watching the trailer a preconceived notion might have somehow blinded you, however, that's not the case as the director has justified each and every move that he decided to adopt.

Taapsee breaks all the barriers with her performance as she gets into the skin of the protagonist. With that being said, Pavail Gulati, Kumud Mishra, Ratna Pathak Shah, Dia Mirza, Manav Kaul, Naila Grewal never lost the track of their characters and apart from that, they have done a commendable job no matter the duration of their appearance. 

In conclusion, Sinha has broken all the barriers with the visualization of the script as the plot never seems to overlap itself with complex characters. The film serves multiple endings, 3 - to be precise and it’s up to you which one you decide to gulp and accept the fate of a character which you could connect with.

Geetika Vidya has done a stupendous job performing as a maid as she transcends each and every emotion with great skill. As mentioned earlier, complex characters like Sunita require sterling actors like her. Hats off to Vidya, for offering her best for this film.

As the message of this film holds several meanings in itself due to its 'Ambiguity', similarly, every relationship is different and I personally request you to take your decisions wisely rather than just ending it!)
