Horror films built around Indian mythology have become increasingly common in recent years, but very few manage to strike a balance between faith, folklore, and genuine suspense. Tavvai enters that space with an ambitious premise that draws heavily from stories associated with Lakshmi and Alakshmi, ancestral curses, and long held beliefs surrounding the sacred Peepal tree. The result is a film that remains intriguing for a large part of its runtime, even if it occasionally struggles under the weight of its own ideas.

Instead of rushing into scares, Tavvai takes its time establishing its world and the mythology that drives the conflict. The film places considerable importance on cultural beliefs and family history, using them as key pieces in a mystery that unfolds gradually. While that slower approach may not satisfy viewers expecting constant horror set pieces, it helps create a stronger sense of curiosity around the central narrative.

Mythology Becomes The Driving Force

One of the more interesting aspects of Tavvai is how comfortably it embraces traditional Hindu concepts without turning them into mere background decoration. The mythology is not treated as an excuse for supernatural events. Rather, it becomes the foundation upon which the entire story rests.

Directors Nirbhay Jariwala and Jayesh Vrushiraj attempt to create a horror film where mystery matters as much as fear. The screenplay continuously reveals new details about the curse and its origins, encouraging viewers to connect the dots along the way. There are moments where the exposition becomes slightly heavy handed, but the film generally manages to maintain audience interest.

The strongest stretch arrives around the interval. Without giving away major spoilers, the narrative takes a dramatic turn that significantly raises the stakes. It is the kind of moment that reshapes expectations and creates genuine anticipation for what follows next.

Arpit Ranka Commands Attention

Among the performances, Arpit Ranka emerges as the film's standout contributor. He brings a certain authority to the screen that immediately draws attention whenever he appears. More importantly, he handles the emotional and supernatural dimensions of his character with conviction, helping several crucial scenes land effectively.

Bhushan Pradhan delivers a dependable performance and serves as an important anchor within the narrative. Veteran actor Manoj Joshi lends familiarity and gravitas to the proceedings, particularly during moments that require emotional grounding. The supporting cast, including Sushil Singh, Spanda Palli, Neetu Pandey, and Tripti Sahu, contributes adequately and helps maintain the film's overall momentum.

Tavvai is less interested in overwhelming viewers with jump scares and more focused on building an atmosphere of uncertainty. The film frequently relies on mood, mythology, and mystery to generate tension. This approach works in its favour during several sequences, particularly when the narrative leans into its folklore driven roots.

That said, not every horror beat lands with equal impact. There are stretches where the pacing feels uneven, and a tighter edit could have made certain portions more effective. The film occasionally becomes more invested in explaining its mythology than maintaining suspense.

The visual presentation complements the subject matter reasonably well. The settings, religious symbolism, and recurring imagery associated with the Peepal tree contribute to the film's identity and help distinguish it from more generic horror offerings.

Music Adds To The Experience

The soundtrack plays an important role in shaping the film's atmosphere. Tracks such as Deva Ho, Taandav, Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam, Rooh Ka Dhaga, and Bambuliya are woven into the narrative in a way that feels organic. Rather than interrupting the flow, the songs reinforce the spiritual and unsettling tone the film is aiming for.

The background score is particularly effective during key dramatic moments, enhancing the sense of mystery without becoming overpowering.

Tavvai may not reinvent the mythology horror genre, but it does enough to justify a watch. Its commitment to Indian folklore, a compelling central mystery, and a strong performance from Arpit Ranka keep it engaging even when the storytelling becomes inconsistent. For viewers looking for horror that draws more from tradition and mythology than conventional scares, Tavvai offers a reasonably satisfying experience with a few memorable moments along the way.
