The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) that was passed by the Parliament of India on December 11, 2019, which saw a lot of criticism from the citizens across the country. Many questioned the Indian government for passing the bill and several celebrities stood solidarity for the protests.

Ahead of the release of Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, the film has yielded too much heat due to Taapsee’s involvement with the anti-CAA protests. Netizens instigated trolls on twitter followed by a hashtag, ‘Boycott Thappad’ which was trending on social media for a while.

Taapsee has always been outspoken about her opinions and political views and she has never flinch in making controversial statements. While her films have regularly talked about socio-political stigmas in general, and they have been a reflection of her bold opinions. In a recent conversation with Economic Times, Taapsee reacted to the trolls and the trending hashtag ‘boycott Thappad’.

I think personal opinions of actors should not affect their profession and I don’t really think it does to an extent. It takes about 1000-2000 tweets to trend a certain hashtag. Does that really affect a film? I don’t think so. I might have different social and political views from a lot of people but that does not mean people will not go and watch the film. An actor is never bigger than a film. A film has hundreds of people involved in it. It is stupid to decide whether or not you will watch a movie based on an actor’s socio-political views.

In retrospect, Taapsee was seen joining a peaceful protest at Carter Road in Mumbai, supporting students of JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) in January. Similarly, Twitter had also taken a dig at Deepika Padukone during the relase of Chhapaak as well.

Twitter trolls even compared Taapsee’s move to that of Deepika Padukone, who stood in solidarity with the students in Delhi.

Earlier, when asked about CAA Taapsee couldn’t express herself on her views about CAA as she hadn’t studied about it. However, she did not fail to mentione that  the visuals which she saw in Jamia, she didn't feel those were pleasant. She felt really sad when she saw the videos where students were talking about their plight. She also added that she feels something big has happened or something big is going to happen.
