Baatein is a multi-starrer short film directed by Adeeb Rais starring veteran actor - Supriya Pilgaonkar, Made in Heaven fame - Shivani Raghuvanshi, actor-director Adeeb Rais and Sankalp Joshi. Set in Palghar, ‘Baatien’ tells the story of a documentary filmmaker as he happens to spend the day with a widowed professor and her niece. The unlikely trio open their hearts out with each other, sharing some of their most personal experiences, deepest fears and have conversations that end up changing their outlook towards life, forever.

Last seen in ALT Balaji’s web series – Home, Supriya plays a science professor and a single mother in this film, who has lost her son to suicide. Known for her neo-noir cult hit, Titli, Shivani plays the role of an engineer who spends weekends with her aunt (Supriya) who’s coping with her son’s loss.  New on the block, Delhi based theatre actor, Sankalp Joshi plays a pivotal role in the film.

We got in touch with Supriya Pilgaonkar who spoke about her character in the movie and a lot more.

Baatein deals with sensitive issues like suicide, depression and ragging, we asked Supriya if she or anyone close to her has experienced similar issues and she said, “I know somebody very close to me who has gone through all of it. It was due to psycho-traumatic thing but the person was not aware of her child’s condition, so I have seen it and it shocked the hell out of me. In fact, the reason I felt very attracted to the subject is because that friend of mine wants to do something about it, and as I had felt it through her I decided to do this. My schedule was very tight, but still I did it because of the subject.”

We all have seen her play a mother a lot of times in TV shows, and everytime she brings a different characteristics to her character despite playing a mother. From Radha Ki Betiyaan to Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, her performance does not feel repetitive. We asked how does she draw her inspiration, and she said, “I draw my inspiration from the stories and characters that are narrated to me, in fact I feel it do it well because I love playing mother and those are the most successful roles in my career. I may have been stereotyped in that, but I don’t have any problem with that because I enjoy playing a mother with different complexities. I don’t know how I do it different every time but there is always something relatable when I play a mother.”

Ask her about the kind of mother that she is in real life and she quips, “I have a wonderful relationship with my daughter (Shriya Pilgaonkar), we share everything. Everyday I learn so many new things from her and I’m glad to have some new inputs and perspectives from her side. Till now I have shaped her, but now she is shaping me and it’s a very healthy thing. Sometimes we discuss things in the capacity of a friend and I have to remind her that I’m her mother, but we end up discussing it anyway. In a way, it’s better if she shares it with me rather than anybody else.”

Speaking about how was it working with Adeeb Rais (director/producer and actor), Supriya shared, “I was playing very hard to get for him, he couldn’t reach out to me for the longest time but he was very persistent and then I just told my manager that I should do the film despite not having the time for it. His ways are very different and understanding. When I met him for the first time, I saw that his intent of making the film was very clear and the story was a very sensitive subject so I wanted to do it. He was very open to my ideas and inputs and moreover he is so young and so talented, so I decided to do it and it turned out quite well.”
