Television actor Shubhangi Atre, known widely for her roles in shows like Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! and Kasturi, was married to Piyush Poorey for 17 years before the couple separated in 2020. Their marriage, which began long before she rose to prominence on Indian television, saw its share of ups and downs. While Shubhangi built a career in the entertainment industry, often balancing daily shoots and household responsibilities, Piyush stayed away from the public eye. Their relationship ended officially in divorce, but the connection between them never completely broke—emotionally or practically.

In April 2025, Piyush Poorey passed away due to multiple organ failure. Speaking about the same in an interview with Siddharth Kanan, Shubhangi revealed that she had learned of his alcohol addiction only after they got married. As her professional life became busier, she remained unaware of how serious his dependence had become.

She recalled a critical episode in 2018 when Piyush was taking steroids for a hair transplant and drinking at the same time. “I told him, ‘This is deadly. You are not supposed to do this.’ And then he was hospitalized and was in ICCU.” Doctors warned her that his condition would deteriorate without a major lifestyle change.

Shubhangi described how she tried to help him recover, seeking rehabilitation options and involving the family in discussions. Despite these efforts, nothing worked. Eventually, the toll on her mental health and the environment at home led her to part ways with him in 2020. “I don’t have any complaints from anyone. Piyush se zaroor ek sawal mai upar jaake puchungi ki ‘Why you chose alcohol over me and Ashi?’” she said, referencing their daughter.

Even after their divorce, Shubhangi confirmed that she continued to support Piyush financially. On the day they signed the divorce papers, she still tried to convince him to change his habits. Days before his death, she had spoken to him. “I was crying. Mai usse yahi keh rahi thi ki jaldi thik ho jao.”

Confirming the cause of death, she stated, “Alcohol was the culprit and there were multiple organ failure.”

When asked how their daughter responded to the news, Shubhangi said, “Hum dono ko pata tha that it’s coming.” However, she admitted the timing came as a shock.

Through the emotional and personal revelations, Shubhangi Atre’s account sheds light on the impact of addiction on families, the limits of support, and the complexities that often continue long after a relationship ends.
