Shraddha Kapoor's Eetha under fire as Vithabai Narayangaonkar's family objects to title

Shraddha Kapoor's upcoming film Eetha has found itself at the centre of an unexpected controversy long before its release. While the teaser won praise for showcasing the actor in a powerful new avatar, the film's title has sparked a debate in Maharashtra. Political leaders as well as the family of legendary Lavani and Tamasha performer Vithabai Narayangaonkar have questioned why a biopic based on her life is not named after the celebrated artist herself.

Why Is The Film's Title Being Questioned?

The controversy began after the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Film and Cultural Department objected to the title Eetha. According to reports, the organisation believes that a film inspired by the life of Vithabai Narayangaonkar should proudly carry her name. They have suggested titles like Vithabai or Vitha, arguing that it would be a more fitting tribute to the folk legend whose contribution helped shape Maharashtra's Lavani and Tamasha traditions.

The demand has now received support from Vithabai's own family. Her sons, Kailash and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, have appealed to the makers to rename the film. They believe the title should preserve Vithabai's identity and ensure younger generations remember the woman behind the remarkable story.

At present, neither director Laxman Utekar nor production house Maddock Films has responded publicly to the request.

Can The Makers Be Forced To Change The Name?

As of now, the issue remains a public demand rather than a legal dispute. There is no official court case or legal order directing the filmmakers to change the title. Unless someone establishes a legal right, such as trademark, copyright or defamation concerns, filmmakers are generally free to choose the title of their project. However, public pressure from cultural groups and the subject's family can sometimes influence creative decisions, especially in biographical films that portray real personalities.

Teaser Hints At An Emotional Story

The teaser has generated significant excitement. Shraddha Kapoor appears almost unrecognisable as Vithabai Narayangaonkar, delivering what could become one of the most challenging performances of her career.

The teaser opens with a packed Lavani performance, with the audience eagerly waiting for Eetha to take the stage. Behind the curtains, her character is shown heavily pregnant but determined to perform. Moments later, she goes into labour, yet refuses to abandon the stage even after being warned that it could cost her life. Following childbirth, she returns to complete the performance, underlining her extraordinary commitment to her art. The film is set to hit the theatres on 28th August.
