Sholay Remake? Ramesh Sippy has One Condition!

The 1975 cult classic Sholay is one of the most celebrated Bollywood films even after 45 long years. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan among others, the film gave us iconic characters like the dacoit Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan to some of the very popular dialogues from the film that are still loved by the audiences.

In recent times, Bollywood has seen a new wave of remakes and many iconic movies have been recreated with a modern twist. However, Ramesh Sippy, the director of Sholay does not seem very pleased with the idea of remakes and asserts that he is not keen on remaking Sholay. However, he may change his mind on only one condition.

"I am not really keen to recreate 'Sholay' unless one can imagine a way to represent it in a very different way. Otherwise, remaking is something I would not like to do as far 'Sholay' is considered. It does not mean that I am against remakes -- many films have been remade beautifully but it's not that easy. It's how you recreate the whole world of a particular film and genre (that matters)," Sippy told IANS.

Sippy recalls the memories of Sholay and shared the challenges to helm such an extravagant film back in the day.

"From making so many actors work together to involving high-octane action sequences and introducing people to the concept of a 70mm screen, creating 'Sholay' was a huge challenge. I am glad that our efforts did not go in vain. People liked our film, appreciated it and even 45 years later they still talk about it. It feels great to be associated with such a remarkable project," he added.

In 2007, Ram Gopal Varma had attempted to recreate Sholay, which was titled as  Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. However, the film turned a big dud and failed at the box office too.
