Shrimad Bhagwat

Hindi television is currently witnessing two major trends, supernatural thrillers and mythological shows. Joining the bandwagon of mythological shows is the latest Colors’ show Shrimad Bhagwad. Produced by Nikhil Dwivedi, the show features Rajneesh Duggal who will play Lord Krishna and Shiny Doshi who will play Radha in lead roles. Apart from them, the other cast includes actors Indraneil Sengupta as Lord Shiva as Ishita Ganguly as Goddess Parvati. The series is said to be based on 52 questions that Radha asks Lord Krishna and is supposed to be episodic.

We got up, close and personal with Shiny Doshi and in a candid conversation with us, she revealed about her character, her fascination with mythological stories and much more. Read below some excerpts from our conversation…

It’s the first time that you’re doing a mythological show, so tell us about your experience.

Yes, it’s my first time in mythological genre and I’m playing Radha on screen. I’m aware that this character has been played several times on screen and people have a certain image of Radha in their mind, but I’ve tried to play it my way. Radha and Krishna are the narrators of the show.

What made you say ‘yes’ for the role?

See, I’m a Vaishnav and we worship Lord Krishna. So since childhood I’ve heard several stories about them and as a matter of fact Radha and Krishna have been my favorite since childhood. Initially when I got the offer to play Radha, I was honestly a little scared and nervous because when you’re playing gods on screen there’s a lots of responsibility that comes along. There’s a certain diction, language, body language that you need to get right. Also there have been so many shows on Radha Krishna that maintaining my uniqueness is a difficult task. But, I really love Radha as a goddess and I feel fortunate to play the role.

Have you read Bhagwad Geeta? Any story that inspires you or fascinates you a lot?

I tried reading it (Geeta) when I was young but couldn’t finish it as it’s a little too difficult to understand. I remember my mother used to read Geeta and used to tell us the stories. Through this show, I have learnt a lot. When I and Rajneesh used to get time between the shots, we used to ask a lot of questions. In our show there is a story that between ‘Bhagya’ and ‘Karma’, what is the greatest virtue. I think that is one story that really inspires me. I also try to incorporate the learnings in my real life.

How was it working with Rajneesh?

It was really great shooting with him. For both of us, it was a blessing to play Radha and Krishna. Both our families are Krishna bhakts and it was destiny that we got this show. Our camaraderie was great on sets.
