Rahul Chittella will helm the film, which will premiere on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar in August 2022. It follows the multi-generational Batra family as they prepare to leave their 34-year-old family home.
Sharmila was last seen in Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan's 2010 film Break Ke Baad. The actress expressed her excitement about her return and stated,
“After a considerable gap, I am very happy to be in the familiar and well-loved ambiance of a film set."
After hearing the narration of the "incredibly touching and splendidly authored story," the Amar Prem actress said she almost instantaneously knew she wanted to be a part of Gulmohar. She also described it as a multi-layered and engrossing family drama. Sharmila is confident that the viewers will love watching it at home with their loved ones.

Manoj said of his excitement about starring in Gulmohar. First and foremost, the narrative of the film was extremely candid and relatable. The Gangs of Wasseypur actor also stated that sharing screen space with Sharmila Tagore is a honour, he added. Siddhartha Khosla composed the film's original score (This is Us). Gulmohar is a collaboration between Fox Star Studios, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Autonomous Works.
