Getting the right name for your movie is also a task. They say what’s in a name. But a name can make a lot of difference if you’re in the business of making movies .
If you ask any producer and they’ll tell you that calling dibs on a film title is a serious business in itself. Filmmaker Aanand L Rai though had a bit of a lucky streak with the titles of his two new films.
In a conversation with ETimes, the acclaimed director-producer revealed,
“I moved from one of my most complicated films, ‘Atrangi Re’ to the simplest story of the bond between a brother and sister, ‘Raksha Bandhan’. But there’s an interesting story about the time when I went to the film association to get both the titles. I did not get ‘Atrangi Re’ but when I asked for the title of ‘Raksha Bandhan’, forget having attempted a story on the subject, nobody had even registered the title.”
Let us tell you this a rare occurrence because it’s a common practice in Bollywood to register catchy film titles and then spin a story around them.
The story of getting the rights for the title of ‘Atrangi Re’ is quite interesting, too. Rai recalled,
“Salman Bhai had the title registered to his production house but he gave it to me on one condition. He told his associates to give the title rights only if I direct the film, otherwise they wouldn’t have let it go.”
Meanwhile, Atrangi Re was slated to release in theatres. However, owing to the COVID 19 pandemic, makers decided to go the OTT way and now, the film will release on Disney+Hotstar on December 24, 2021.
The film's trailer showcased the life of Rinku who gets forcibly married to Vishu (Dhanush). What happens in her life after that is the story of Atrangi Re.
