Writing for television is one of the toughest tasks for a writer because balancing the story-line, drama, trends, changing audience needs and maintaining the TRP at the same time can be tedious. Popular writer turned producer, Saba Mumtaz wrote for Star Plus’ one of the longest-running shows, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai for a span of 7 years. Her creative thoughts can be counted as one of the reasons for the show’s success. In 2013, Saba turned producer and has shows like Ek Boond Ishq, Meri Sasu Maa and Yeh Moh Moh Ke Dhaagey to her credit.
Recently, we got in touch with her for a short conversation about her journey and more.
Expressing her happiness on writing for Yeh Rishta and talking about her producing journey, she said, “It feels great, I have written the show for 7 years and it’s my baby. The show is still topping the TRP chart and it’s an excellent feeling to see your baby grow. I started producing in 2013. My show Ek Boond Ishq was a romantic thriller and people used to write that ‘Thriller done right for the first time’. All my three shows had different characters, in fact, I believe in creating different characters because they are the ones who stay with the audience.”
“I love writing and telling stories, that’s my motivation. If you ask me to write the same thing every day then I get bored, I love creating new characters. During Yeh Rishta I never felt the monotony because we were dealing with Akshara and Naitik’s lives, a young girl who gets married, then she becomes a mother and a teacher. We were writing several stories rolled into one,” she explains.
Saba concluded by giving a message for her fans, she said, “Keep watching TV and keep giving us your love. And I hope I give viewers better stories every year because they are the ones who make us. Lots of love and hugs to them.”
Workwise, Saba is currently pitching some shows to Sony Entertainment Television and &TV. Meanwhile, she is also pitching a web-series to Zee5. She has also written a film, which is too in the pitching phase.
We wish Saba immense luck and success for all her future ventures.
