Review: Ronit Roy-Tisca Chopra starrer 'Hostages' is an edgy thriller that will keep you engaged throughout

The series streams as a Hotstar Special on Hotsar...

Hostages

After mind blowing series’ like Criminal Justice and City Of Dreams, Hotstar has come up with yet another gripping series Hostages featuring Ronit Roy and Tisca Chopra in lead roles. Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the crime thriller is an adaptation of an Israeli show with the same name. Hostages follows the story of a doctor whose family is taken a hostage by a retired police officer and is forced to make a tough decision- to kill the Chief Minister or to lose her family.

The series starts with introducing characters and setting the premise. SP Prithvi Singh (Ronit Roy) who is on last day of his duty, nabs an alleged terrorist successfully. Shortly we are introduced to Dr. Mira Anand (Tisca Chopra), her husband (Parvin Dabas), her children and Chief Minister (Dalip Tahil). As the series progresses, we can already foresee a danger as a young man (Aashim Gulati) invades Dr. Mira’s house pretending to be an internet service provider and keeping a tab on the house. In the next scene, we notice a stranger getting out of Dr. Mira’s cabin, and before we know soon the scenes shifts to them getting attacked by a bunch of masked men while they are prepping up for supper. As they are put at the gunpoint, the attacker blackmails Mira to kill CM  to save her family from any harm. While we are still digesting the astounding twist, we get to know that the attacker is none other than SP Prithvi Singh.

Ronit Roy as the anti-hero SP Prithvi Singh and Tisca Chopra as Dr. Mira Anand are absolutely brilliant. Though the series itself is well written and executed, their performance adds a lot to the narrative. Even though Prithvi Singh is an anti-hero, you don’t particularly hate him. On the other hand, Mira’s helplessness seems genuine and will leave you contemplating as to what would she choose. Parvin Dabas who has made a comeback after a long time, has done a good job too.

Sudhir Mishra is known as of the most talented directors of Bollywood and he lives up to his reputation in his first digital directorial. All in all, if you love watching crime thrillers, you should definitely give this one a shot.
