This one will take a lot of redeeming in the upcoming episodes...

Jeet Gayi Toh Piya More is touted as a cross-cultural tale of Beauty and The Beast. It is a lose adaptation set in a village where the fate of Devi Chauhan (Yesha Rughani), the beauty will be decided with the beast, Adhiraj Rajawat (Krip Suri). Embroiled in mystery, flashbacks and gangster genre elements, the show promises to be about strong characters as Devi too, will retaliate and make the tussle quite a challenge.

From chains, beastly behavior and rivalries, here's what the show looks like-

The Story So Far...

The story begins with a rift between the Chauhans and the Rajawats. In the very beginning, we are told of a rivalry between the family as they have a tryst over who will initiate the prayers for the day in the temple. Heera (Roopa Divetia), the matriarch of Rajawat family, in order to take revenge against the Chauhans (for the death of her husband) had Devi and her parents killed, but is now brought the realization that she survived. She now wants her life to be hellish and wants to crank it up a notch by giving her a punishment worse than death. Heera declares that she will make Devi her bahu to spite the Chauhans and get Ambika (Devi's aunt) back for calling her family's sindoor cursed. Adhiraj, the Rajawat son is geared up to fulfill his mother's wishes and gets information on Devi followed by arranging to track Bharat (Devi's uncle) as he's headed to Delhi to meet Devi. Meanwhile, Devi is also headed to her birthplace, introduced in a sequence of songs that bring out her cheerful personality. Devi is a medical student heading back home to surprise her family but her journey leads to a quite a chase sequence where she sees her uncle in a car and calls his name. Her rickshaw veers out of control and she comes face to face to with Adhiraj as his goons beat up the driver. Adhiraj is almost  headed in the wrong direction when he realizes the girl in none other than Devi and tracks her right back to her house.

He drags her out of her home to his mansion where Heera is eager to welcome her. Here we see resistance as Devi fires back at the mother-son duo for their horrid manners and also challenges their authority by not letting Adhiraj go through with the pheras. She questions his masculinity and his mother's unbringing which leads Adhiraj to take the decision of letting her go with a guarantee that she will be back begging to marry him herself. The first few episodes show that Adhiraj has an unrequited lover, Urmi and who was married to his older brother but still pines for him. She wants the marriage to be foiled and has some plans too.

The Chauhans try to help Devi leave the place but she resolves to never leave her family's side during such a crisis and takes Adhiraj's challenge head on. Adhiraj responds like the standard male chauvinist creep who wants the girl even more now that its clear she will never be a consenting participant in their marriage.

The Good

We think the original soundtrack is a very nice touch. What's refreshing to see is that the supporting characters are strong too. They don't get side tracked and are nicely woven into the plot. We are given a strong character like Ambika Chauhan, Urmi Rajawat and Heera herself. The interplay of negative and positive sides works for the plot. Newbie Yesha Rughani really is beautiful and has every quality of belle. We see her fighting back and she isn't taking any of the shocking incidents lying down. The initial half does leave room for intrigue which is a good thing as the plot has a lot in store.

The Bad

Krip Suri's character is effective, he makes the viewer hate him but its perhaps a little too effective. His character is based on the beast, except, he isn't given the form of a beast (unlike the original). Leaving us with only one possibility that he is touted as the beast for one reason; to get away with criminal behavior. We're shown irksome scenes of him forcing down water in Devi's mouth and shoving a gun in her mouth too in order to shut her up. And, we wonder if we're going to see more of such cringe-worthy scenes under the guise of character appropriation.

A particularly disturbing assertion is where Adiraj says "These are the women of my home, they know shame and modesty so they would never act against their elders". Putting female characters on a pedestal just to put down another female character has long been the specialty of TV shows, but this takes a dangerous turn as we see viewers from the rural space nodding in agreement.

The plot itself isn't held by much other than challenges made on egoistic principles. Devi agrees a little too easily to stay back and take on the fight. It's not that we dislike the story line but, we're saying it could be avoided entirely, had rationale and good sense prevailed.

The Verdict

Jeet Gayi Toh Piya More does have some redeeming factors like its intriguing back story, the strong headed lead pair and a natural atmosphere that the show creates. But considering the rural setting (and a visible absence of the law authorities) the writers will exploit in full the potential of dangerous minds who now have the space and freedom to conjure up whatever game they like. Mingling with good performances is the problematic treatment of dialogues that are down right politically inappropriate.

The show will have a hard time making its content believable the way Pehredaar Piya Ki did and we hope they have a good justification waiting for the audiences. Considering the fact that the posters and promos have Devi in chains and she's already been brutalized by Adhiraj, we think its going to be difficult.

I think both krip suri and Yesha Rughani are doing a wonderful job in the show. Chill guys, let the story progress before start criticizing.

While I do not agree with the content for this show, I just don't get why there's only selective criticism for this show. The formula (and inherent sexism) applied to show is present in many shows currently and in the past too. Gul Khan is the master of this formula. Ekta Kapoor has applied this too even in her shows such as YHM (let's not forget RS), but not to such an extent as GK. One show in the past even took it far enough to show marital rape (MEIEJ). But why has no one spoken out on it? Why has no one called out for a ban on such shows? Before I have crazy fan girls attacking me, just because they suddenly turn the males positive later on does not justify his actions, especially when he's unapologetic about it. It devalues the seriousness of domestic violence experienced by women and sends across the message that women should bear it all, in hopes of their husband reforming.
I find that the amount of criticism about such shows is inversely proportional to the amount of fans and the popularity of the show. Just wait and see. If the chemistry between Krip Suri and the lead actress becomes a hit later on, suddenly the amount of criticism will go down. Better still, ask the top actors and actresses to address this and everyone will keep quiet about this because most of them are guilty of acting in such shows. As long as there are fans, producers will continue showing this and propogating sexism. If there are no fans and TRPs for such shows, such a trend will eventually stop.
When people talk about regressive shows, I can't stand the inherent hypocrisy when they ignore such sexist shows and other regressive shows (especially when their favourites are acting in them). Don't pick and choose. If you're genuine in your desire for better TV content, protest against all regressive shows. Stand against regressive shows that are popular and have thousands of fans too.

Have these makers read Beauty and the Beast? Its a play on appearance. Not judging books by their cover. The descriptor provided does not sound anything like the story of beauty and the beast.
Krip Suri is a good actor. This sounds like IPK and contemporaries. Abusive ML and reforming FL. Yawn!

This article pretty much sums up the show. I just hope Adiraj doesn't go the marital rape route...that would be unforgivable in my eyes.

The Beast was never actually a beast, he appeared to be one to the world!!!!

This show is obviously based on the Rabindranath Tagore novel what with even the brother's wife track pulled in but at least Tagore never tried to show a love story and showed marital rape!!!!

Again they will show the heroine can change a guy!!!What crap!!!

Can we get this banned as well??

Why these serials go on air baffles me. Whatever happened to good quality TV? Oh and there's no comparison to Beauty and the Beast. At least the Beast was harmless and kind.
