Refresh Your Memory!

BollyCurry brings to you a look at the movies released in the last six months of Bollywood and the subtle themes seen each month.

With the start of July, we are officially midway through the year of 2015. Six months have passed and six more left to go before the year ends. As this major milestone is crossed,  BollyCurry decided to look back on all those movies released in the first half of this year and we noticed that the movies from the start of 2015 are dissimilar to each other varying in plots, characters and backgrounds. But as we continued to probe through them we realized that even with such varied movies there was a subtle theme around each month. Focusing on those themes, BollyCurry brings to you "Refresh Your Memory!", a look at the movies released in the last six months of Bollywood.

January - Horror and Masala Month

January saw many movies released but the four movies that come to anyone's mind are Tevar starring Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi SinhaDolly Ki Doli with Sonam Kapoor in the titular role, Alone with debutante Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu, and Khamoshiyan with Ali Fazal and two new faces, Gurmeet Choudhary and Sapna Pabbi. While the first two were the usual masala movie with the former being action-based and latter being comedy-based, the other two movies were horror movies. It must have certainly been a surprise to movie lovers to see two horror movies released in the same month. None of the movies mentioned above fared well in terms of box office revenue, but they surely left an impact on the audience making January a Horror and Masala Month. A special mention goes out to Akshay Kumar starrer Baby, which was anything but masala or horror and may very well have topped the box office charts in January!

February - The Month of Diversity

February, the month of love, did not see as much movies on love as we expected. Instead, it had two movies that were diverse and had plots not regularly seen in Bollywood. Badlapur, the revenge saga starring Varun Dhawan and Yami Gautam and Roy, a thriller with Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandes and Ranbir Kapoor in titular role, were as different from each other as chalk and cheese. While the former was a commercial hit, the latter was not that successful, hence, February this year was the month of diversity.

March - The Month for Forgettables

It won't take a genius to guess why March was the month of forgettables as far as Bollywood is concerned. If you still haven't guessed then look back to the month and try to remember the name of any of the movies that released in that month. No one will be surprised if none came to your mind. If you are Anushka Sharma's fan, then you might remember the movie which she starred in and produced, NH10. But other than that, the rest of the movies released that month are lost in the depths of our minds!

April - Month of Unusual Plots

April came and brought with it many movies but we wish to draw your attention to two films that had very unusual plots and defined the whole month of April. The movies are the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! and Mr. X with Emraan Hashmi playing the principal character. Both movies dealt with unusual plots. The former was set in a different era altogether and showed us the life of a fictional detective while the latter is one of the few sci-fi movies made in India. While neither movie did well commercially, they did set a precedent for future filmmakers.

May - Month of Superstars

Four movies released in May that created a lot of excitement even before their release. This was because all four movies had at least one superstar in it. The month started with Action King Akshay Kumar starrer Gabbar is Back followed by Piku which had not just one superstar Amitabh Bachchan but also Deepika Padukone, who is a phenomenal actress. Then came Bombay Velvet which while being a commercial failure had two heartthrobs of the current generation - Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. And last but not the least is Tanu Weds Manu Returns starring another versatile and well appreciated actress Kangana Ranaut. And thus, May was the one month which had four movies with superstars, something that none of the above months can claim.

June - Month of Musicals

Whether it was multi-starrer family drama Dil Dhadakne Do or Hamari Adhuri Kahani, a romance-cum-drama story featuring Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi or ABCD 2, a dance based movie starring Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, one thing was common amongst all of them - the fantastic music that are still being played on your iPods and mobiles. June gave us three albums with amazing soundtracks and one day we might forget their story, but we won't forget their songs.

That, our dear readers, concludes our refresher course on the movies from the first half of 2015. Some movies mentioned above were commercial hits, while some were failures, but the fact remains that all left their imprint in the audiences' mind and hence deserve to be a part of this brief summary of the first half of 2015's Bollywood. If you think that the list above is incomplete or is missing some vital movie then feel free to inform us in the comment box below! We, at Bollycurry, are eager to hear your thoughts!
