Actor Rajpal Yadav has recently become entangled in a significant legal dispute that led to his incarceration at Tihar Jail, stemming from a high-profile case involving a reported ?9 crore debt and allegations of cheque bounce. Breaking his silence on the matter, the actor has addressed the widespread speculation and public narratives forming around the incident. He emphasised that the situation is far more nuanced and complicated than what has been portrayed in the media, urging people to consider the broader context before drawing conclusions about his role in the controversy.
Rajpal Yadav on why he landed up in jail
Rajpal Yadav opened up about his ongoing legal case during a recent appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast. The discussion kicked off with a mention of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who had previously described Rajpal as a “kind-hearted” individual known for keeping his kitchen open to support struggling actors during tough times.
In the same conversation, Rajpal took the opportunity to address a widespread assumption about his financial situation. He spoke directly about the belief that an actor with his extensive body of work and long career in the industry should have easily been able to repay a sum of Rs 5 crore, explaining that the reality behind the case is more layered than public perception suggests.
Rajpal shared, That’s exactly the question... the day people understand this, they will understand my entire case… I was not jailed because I didn’t have money. It was about a larger issue and a matter of principle.
He mentioned that if it was only about Rs 5 crore, "it would have been resolved in 2012 itself." He also claimed that the issue ended up causing losses between Rs 17–22 crore. He shared, Ye 5 crore ka masla hota to 2012 me nipat ta. Iss 5 crore ne 17 crore ko dubane ka kaam kiya hai.
Rajpal Yadav opens up on movie struggle
Rajpal also talked about the movie that's causing all the trouble, saying a big chunk of it was already finished before everything went south. He said, Rs 12 crore had already been spent... it became a Rs 22 crore project…If even enemies are involved in a project, they should let it release. The audience should decide.
The actor responded to the fraud allegations by saying, In the film industry, out of 100 films, 20 work and 80 fail... If a film fails, it doesn’t mean fraud has been committed.
Despite the ongoing case, the actor shared his faith in India's judiciary. He emphasized, "this fight was not started by me, but it will end because of me.
About the legal battle
The legal battle began in 2010 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed Rs 5 crore from a Delhi firm to finance his film "Ata Pata Laapata." Unfortunately, the movie didn't do well at the box office, leading to financial problems and a bounced cheque case. In 2018, he was found guilty and sentenced to six months in jail, a decision that was later confirmed in 2019.
This year, in February, Rajpal surrendered to serve his sentence related to a debt of about Rs 9 crore. He was given temporary bail after paying Rs 1.5 crore. The Delhi High Court also provided further relief, making sure he wouldn't be immediately re-arrested once the interim bail expired.
Even with this prolonged legal struggle, Rajpal Yadav is still hopeful about the judicial process. He has expressed his deep respect for the courts and his belief that justice will eventually prevail.
