Phone a Friend: Humorous, Romantic and Sci-Fi Series Driven by its own Unique Flavour!

ZEE5 series ‘Phone a Friend’ is a sci-fi romcom between a guy, a girl and a cellphone. The series is directed by Yash Dave and Allyson patel, produced by Utopia films and co-produced by Anish N Surana, Ashish and Surabhi Mittal. The series stars Akhlaque Khan, Swati Kapoor and Manta in prominent roles. 

The concept of the series is extremely unique and despite being a sci-fi, the series has its own unique taste with the added humour and the punchlines. The series starts off with introducing Akhlaque Khan’s character as Varun who is a professor by profession. The principal is not happy with his teaching and the girl he is crushing on thinks he is a complete loser. Amid all this there comes a new friend in his life, i.e. his phone who eventually becomes his best friend.  

His phone (Leonardo) helps him connect with his childhood crush Jia and become a wingman in Varun and Jia's love story. However, there is a certain twist at the end, for which you’ll have to watch the series. Will Varun and Jia’s love story escalate or will it take a new turn? What will happen to Varun and Leonardo’s friendship? The story will also unfold a number of questions as the series moves further. The series is fast paced and crisp which will keep you hooked on to it’s plot the entire time. 

Aklaque Khan as Varun and Swati Kapoor as Jia play their parts with utmost conviction. However, Mantra who is the voice behind the phone (Leonardo) steals the show. Right from his mechanical voice, to the added punchlines and the emotional connect, Mantra was truly the right choice for Leonardo and he kept the viewers engaged throughout the series. 

Apart from this, the background sound fits perfectly in the series giving a whole new and refreshing vibe to the audience. The song is extremely catchy and you may even find yourself listening to it on loop. 

Allyson and Yash did a fantastic job in directing the series, the simple yet innovative setting of the series gives it its own unique flavour. It also touches some important issues like racism in Leonardo’s world, where he talks about the Council. The makers were able to convey the message of environmental awareness through the series and how human beings have destroyed the environment that they live in. 

Verdict: Phone a friend is a romantic, humorous and interesting tale between Varun, Jia and a Phone. It can be added to your list.
