But reducing Parveen Babi’s life to her relationships or her final years would overlook the significance of what she represented during her peak. Long before Bollywood embraced the image of the independent, westernised and self assured woman, Parveen Babi had already become its face.

At a time when heroines were largely portrayed through traditional archetypes, Parveen arrived with an entirely different screen presence. She wore western outfits unapologetically, played confident urban women and carried a sophistication that felt new for mainstream Hindi cinema. Alongside stars like Zeenat Aman, she helped redefine what a Bollywood heroine could look like in the 1970s and early 1980s. Her success was undeniable. Films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halaal and Shaan established her as one of the biggest stars of her generation. Yet even at the height of her stardom, there seemed to be a gap between the glamorous image the world saw and the woman behind it.

Parveen’s personal life remained under constant public scrutiny, particularly her relationships with some of the industry’s most prominent men.

One of her earliest high profile relationships was with Danny Denzongpa. The two were considered one of Bollywood’s most talked about couples during the 1970s. The image of one of Bollywood’s biggest stars being found days after her death became symbolic of the loneliness that many believed had consumed her final years. Yet that ending, tragic as it was, should not define her entire legacy.
