The entire nation is eagerly waiting for the Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrat Bharuch starrer Dream Girl. Ever since the movie was announced, the audience has been curious to watch the movie. Everyone has been going crazy since the trailer and the songs were released. People have literally started addressing Ayushmann as Pooja, for his character of a vocal artist in the movie.
Now just a week prior to the release of the film, filmmaker Janak Toprani alleged plagiarism on the makers of Dream Girl. Asper the reports in Mid-Day, Janak argues that his 2017 release, Call For Fun, bears resemblance to Balaji Telefilms' production.
He claims to have approached Balaji with his script on two occasions but was turned down. "After they let go of the project, I got a financier and [made] the movie last year," he says. Janak was quick to add that Ekta Kapoor was not partof the discussion he had with the production.
The director who shared the details of the subsequent e-mails he wrote to Balaji, with Mid-Day,said, “After the trailer released, we (him along with his friend who told him about the resemblance between the two films) took a week to consult a few lawyers. Then, I tried to call Nachiket Pantvaidya [CEO, Balaji] but he did not answer my call. If Dream Girl is similar to my film, I will file a legal case. I want credit as the writer and royalty rights.”
When Mid-Day contacted Dream Girl’s director Raaj Shaandilyaa, he took full ownership of the film’s concept. He said, “The idea belongs to me and my co-writer since 2010. We have also registered it. If the concerned director's film was not commercially successful, why would anybody replicate his idea?”
Well now that the director has openly spoken about the whole plagiarism matter, we will just have to wait and see if the matter further escalates or just ends here.
