Love Aaj Kal director Imtiaz Ali Reacts to Saif’s ‘I liked my trailer more’ Remark

The trailer of Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan’s Love Aaj Kal received a mixed response from the audience. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film is a sequel of the 2009 film of the same name starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. This has led to many comparisons between the two films.

When the trailer dropped, Sara’s father and actor Saif Ali Khan was asked about his impression of the trailer, to which he had said, “I liked my trailer more.” Interestingly, his remarks do not come as a shock to Imtiaz Ali, who has directed both the films.

Reacting to Saif’s remark, Imtiaz told Mumbai Mirror: “Of course, he would. Saif was emotionally invested in that film. I would be upset if he’d said he liked this trailer better.”

The filmmaker also talked about his bond with Saif and shared, “Saif was also the producer on that film while I was the director. But it was usually the reverse, with me telling him not to come late, for example. We had an easy equation, and even in a difficult situation, both of us had a connection because we were shameless enough to not let it really bother us.”

While Saif’s comments do not upset Imtiaz Ali, the actor had clarified his statement in an earlier interview. He explained that he was joking and did not mean it in a wrong way. “With my daughter, I tried to crack a mildly competitive joke. I’m saying I kind of liked our more but obviously this is a completely different movie. And I don’t think it’s perhaps right to compare but, of course, the producers have chosen the same name and I am quite possessive over our film. I don’t want to come across the wrong way because of course what I said was a joke. A little bit of teasing is good,” Saif asserted.

Love Aaj Kal will see rumored lovebirds Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan share screen space for the first time, and the film releases on Valentine's Day on February 14, 2020.
