We Asians have a lot in common; hot sauce, crowded market districts, stereotypes and a love for drama. We have a lot of cultural similarities and it leads to an inherent overlap in taste.

It's no secret that some of the best dramas on the screen have come from foreign lands, think Turkish drama? It had (and continues to have) quite the appeal with viewers in India. Apart from Indian TV's Saas-Bahu sagas and love stories, we have developed an appetite for shows that are really different and also grounded in similarities. Disagreeing parents and sanskaari female leads, anyone?

Here is a definitive starter pack for anyone who wants to get into Korean Drama or KDrama-

Descendants of the Sun

Descendants of the sun is set in a war zone where Yoo Shi Jin, a special forces captain meets Dr. Kang Mo Yeon. The two begin to date but eventually part ways due to the many mishaps on their date having their army background to blame for. Years later they are united as Mo Yeon is asked to lead the medical team in the fictional war zone Urk, here she meets Shi Jin again. This drama has impeccable ratings.

Why you should watch it: The show has won a bunch of awards and for a good reason.

Let's Eat

Let's Eat is about two single characters who are rather isolated but connect through food. The male lead Goo Dae Young is a food blogger and investment salesman who loves eating by himself at fancy restaurants and describing his dishes with pictures of empty plates after he's done eating. Lee Soo Kyung the female lead is a divorcee who is a foodie but has trouble eating alone. The highlight? they are neighbors! Watching these two characters and the supporting cast falling in love and discovering their personalities through shared meals and hot dishes is a total delight.
Why you should watch it: Mouth watering food and sizzling chemistry served on the same plate

Goblin or Guardian: The Lonely and Great God

Goblin or Guardian: The Lonely and Great God has a massive following. Based on regional folklore, the story revolves around Kim Shin who is transformed into an immortal and Ji Eun-Tak who is struggling with school and family life. The record breaking popularity of the lead character since its launch probably comes from a large female fan base swooning over his charm. He possesses supernatural powers and the female lead can summon him by blowing out a flame giving you get the perfect excuse to indulge a little into the cinderella complex.

Why you should watch it: To find out what all the hype is all about.

Boys Over Flowers

Geum Jan Di a middle-class girl who joins an elite high school through a swimming scholarship where she is met with four seemingly arrogant boys who rule the school. After being bullied by the boys, finding their flaws and connecting over each character's plight, the boys form a beautiful bond with Jan Di and grow into better personalities. The female lead is a very relatable character where gradually the boys stand up for her and did we mention there's a love triangle involved?

Why you should watch it: The adorable bond these snobbish boys form with the female lead is worth watching.

These series are enough to get you started on a whole new fandom when you're looking to get out of a rut and try something new.

Note: Zindagi and Ozee are airing/streaming KDrama with hindi dubs.

Yes yes I love Korean dramas.
Ji Chang Wook and Lee min Ho are love♥️.
Although I haven't seen more of Lee min Ho dramas but City Hunter dra is awesome.
And Ji Chang Wook, I jusr don't have words for his acting, his looks (he is handsome, cute, hot, sexy), he is an all in one package.
Healer is my the most favourite drama of his. His other dramas are The K2, Empress Ki, Suspicious Partner.
I really recommend you to watch these dramas.

Boys before flowers is not a very good drama. Most of the actors are terrible and characters are very unlikable, especially the good ones. The story painfully stretches at the end. Having said that, I think all fans who watch Kdramas should watch this.

strong woman do bong soon, love from another star, goblin (only for the bromance), master's sun, w, my girl, school 2017, school 2013, oh my ghostess, lets fight ghost are the ones i liked that i can remember.
boys over flowers is highly overrated for me and had one of the worst female lead i have seen in kdramas. the actress makes it even worst.
my all time fav is strong woman. the female lead is amazing and super adorable. her chemistry with the lead guy is superb and they look like cute little puppies.

I like korean dramas, they do offer lot more in terms of story line . Goblin is one of my all time favorite but then the male lead of this drama is phenomenal, anything he has done is worth watching.

But a few more I would like to recommend will be greatest love (really hilarious story of a tv star and a failed actress love story), angry mom (Best drama ever produced by korea, a must watch for every mom who worries about her kid) and last but not least, you are beautiful (girl pretending to be a boy)

Other notable ones are coffee prince, master's sun (anything done by gong hyo jin is usually heart touching and funny).

There are many many more dramas out there. For gul fans, I would recommend watching my secret love, the chemistry between leads is off the chart.

Boys over flowers is good (but out of all the versions I love the japanese verrsion most, allthough I have just started watching the new chinese version which came out in 2010 and I am thinking It might take the lead over Japanese version) especially the male lead lee min hoo, his dramas are really good. He is doing his military training, so hopefully he will be back soon.@simran I have really heard a lot about mask but because of its ending, I always stop myself from watching it. My love from another star is AWESOME, so is secret garden. Uff I love and hated the male lead, it was such an eye opener for him when he realised he couldn't let her go.
@amulya I think I like korean drama because I can relate to them unlike western drama and now indian dramas too. Although korean are extremely glamorous but they have asian traditions which reflect in little things like how a guy would make sure that he take the girl home, pay respect to her parents, love food, don't just let anyone touch them...

I'm almost a K-drama addict who have watched around 150-200 dramas, let me tel the newcomers something... K-dramas aren't anyhing special, they just show their coutry's culture like ITV shows India's culture, like how our shows recycle same old shows they also do the same, who can get new story for each show!! the only advantage is they're finite shows which gives viewers a chance to watch lot more stories.

Do visit http://www.india-forums.com/forum_topics.asp?FID=267 for K-drama recommendation threads. This thread of Asian shows has been on IF's since forever even tho IF's started promoting the shows just now.

Goblin and BOF are cringeworthy, DOTS is okish and Let's Eat is a good show for food lovers.
