Kanwar Dhillon says authenticity is the key to strong performances

Actor Kanwar Dhillon believes that acting is not just about memorising lines or performing in front of the camera. For him, it is about understanding and living the character from within. Known for his grounded performances on television, he feels that authenticity plays the most important role in connecting with the audience.

Sharing his approach to acting, Kanwar explains that every performance begins with understanding the character’s mindset. He says, “Well, that’s about my acting approach. Working across any genre—be it comedy, serious scenes, emotional moments, or action—has to come through the character’s headspace.” For him, it is important to think and feel like the character in every scene. He adds, “I have to approach every scene as the character. Once you’re there, the audience begins to feel for them too.”

Focus on Authenticity and Real Emotions

Kanwar is very clear about what he feels does not work in acting. He points out that simply delivering lines without emotion or effort is not enough. He says, “I see a lot of people just delivering lines for the sake of it, and I don’t understand that. You can’t expect results without putting in the effort.” According to him, every moment on screen should feel real and meaningful.

He believes that the audience connects only when the character feels genuine. “The character should feel real and personal to the audience,” he shares. This focus on authenticity has helped him build a strong connection with viewers, as his performances reflect honesty and simplicity.

Interestingly, Kanwar does not credit formal acting schools for shaping his skills. He believes that acting grows with experience. “Acting is something you learn on the job,” he explains. He has learned by observing his co-actors and improving himself during shoots. “I’ve learned everything while working,” he adds.

Learning Through Experience and Staying Natural

Kanwar describes himself as a “natural actor” and believes in keeping his performances organic. He avoids forcing emotions and instead allows them to come naturally. He says, “I don’t switch to fake emotions when the camera rolls. I keep it organic so the audience can connect.” This approach helps him stay true to his characters and convey emotions realistically.

Over time, he has also worked to improve his emotional expression. He shares that earlier, certain scenes were challenging, but with experience, he has learned how to express emotions more effectively. “Over time, I’ve learned the art of emoting through my eyes,” he says. This ability has added depth to his performances and made them more impactful.

For Kanwar, the key to acting lies in complete immersion in the character. He believes that once an actor truly understands the role, everything else falls into place. He explains, “You have to get into the character’s skin, think like them, and react as they would. Once you enter that space, everything comes naturally.”

His approach highlights the importance of dedication, observation, and honesty in acting. Rather than relying solely on techniques, he focuses on feeling the character and bringing that emotion to the screen.
